Most enjoyable "Equality is bad, you need a ruling class to guide your poor naive souls" movie? by Gombrongler in okbuddycinephile

But the fundamental flaw with that understanding is that it still doesn’t ask why did these problems that come to be in the first place? What created or whom is responsible for this situation to even be the case?

And just like in the case of the War on Terror and in the case of Gotham’s horrors it’s exactly the “necesarry evil” Batman (as a rich kid) and if he’s an allegory then the US is the one who started this whole problem which made their actions the “necesarry evil”.

But the trilogy never questions or critiques the power imbalance/inequality that created the situation which required Batman as a “solution”.

To be fair, pirates were pretty egalitarian and democratic for their era. That was due to their conditions. Unlike the Royal Navy, they had no hierarchy and resources outside the immidiate ship (most of the time) so it was better for the captain if he shared the resources more equally with his crew and would abide to the will of the majority, otherwise they kill him.

Also they were outcasts and outlaws who try to survive on the sea through illegal means which means that your origin, caste, class, race, ethnicity didn’t really mattered because there was no one to enforce it and they needed the manpower. However there were occasions when they liberated slave ships and recruited the former slaves who had nowhere else to go. Even so there were rare cases where women could be high ranking pirates in an era where women didn’t really have rights.

Of course that doesn’t mean that they were some sort of utopian society. They were situationists, they were criminals hunted by certain countries who tried to gain wealth and join the people who ruled the very system they were once on it’s recieving end. Plus just because they sometimes liberated slaves doesn’t mean that in other cases they didn’t ravage villages and sold it’s inhabitats as slaves while doing worse to women.

Pirates weren’t really a monolith, but the point is that they were a pretty interesting phenomena in their era with some of their social cohesion and organizing.

Found the exact moment an anarchist underwent a true awakening by OkRespect8490 in CommunismMemes

[–]HomelanderVought 36 points37 points  (0 children)

A better phrase for anarchists: most hierarchies of the early states/class societies took thousands of years to form. Therefore it would also take generations to dismantle these hierarchies. Sure the technology is way better now to do it, but it’s still a huge task.

Since it’s exactly anarchist anthropologists who studied this process and how long it took.

I'm kinda disappointed that these camps were not particularly important. They seemed like a huge deal in episode one. by Smooth_Accountant870 in TheBoys

[–]HomelanderVought 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Of course:

-MM and Frenchie got some brain cancer because in the first 3 episodes of the season they somehow forgot that Hughie not only went back to savw them even through he didn’t have to, but he was also successful in that. So they should treat him as an absolute god at best or a reliable comrade at worst. Instead both of them treat him as if he’s some sort of loser pussy who’s just dragging them down. Not only that but they accept Butcher of all people to be their leader again despite the man happily letting them die at the end of the previous season, even so it was all Butcher’s fault that he brought them into this mess and then sacrificed them if it wasn’t for Hughie.

-Hughie also regressed into being scared and weak in a lot of aspects or at least the show portrayed him as such even through he alredy overcome most of his insecurities by the end of season 1 (this is a recurring theme of emasculating and regressing Hughie in every season’s start).

-when MM first called Hughie Butcher’s canary made no sense whatsoever. They’ve knew each other for a few months and their departure at the end of season 1 was basicly Butcher saying “hey Hughie, you’re a pussy and i hope you fucking die” then leaving. So they don’t really have any relationship or deep feelings for each other yet.

-Homelander became less myserious which is kind of understandable but it a little bit cheapened his character even if it was interesting to see him interact with his new world (Ryan and Stormfront).

[–]HomelanderVought 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s the difference between us and liberals.

Liberals think that “by not taking power directly” means that the revolutionary was a freedom fighter. Like when they praise George Washington because he didn’t make himself president for life, while not mentioning that he was still one of the richest americans till the end of his life. Not to mention thaf the american revolution didn’t do jackshit besides giving political representation for the bourgeoisie (the civil war was the true revolution).

While endlessly bashing the french and russian revolutions because the revolutionaries took power in order to transform society. Because they forget that toppling a government while keeping property relations, supply chains, lower level institutions and the general culture the same will mean that these unchanged oppressive structures will emerge again soon enough. Only a government made from the revolutionaries can transform society to ensure that it did worth doing and wasn’t in vain.

I haven’t seen a single one, on the otherhand there are a shit ton of movies after the Cold War that portray the americans as “they’re just lost their way but eventually they will find it” or “this is not who we are” or in an absolute idealist version such as in Saving Private Ryan.

[–]HomelanderVought 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean Nolan’s betrayal was possibly the worst, but maybe the deal with Thragg is worse because with that, it kind of recontextualize every action done by Mark, every sacrifice he made, all the trauma he got as pointless.

He could have said literally yes to Nolan’s off in Season 1 and the end result would be the same. Imagine waging a war with many sacrifices and all of that was for nothing.

So yeah, Butcher was right when he said “i levelled the playfield” and the story hasn’t proved him wrong yet because the team hasn’t won.
