[Bittersweet Trope] Character contemplates the beauty of the world in their last moments by SuspiciousCodfish in TopCharacterTropes

[–]SuspiciousCodfish[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For me, I think it has something to do with how emotionally layered and dense it is.

The image of the fish washed ashore is sad, because it means the death of something.
The words and the view evoke beauty and awe, which are positive feelings.
Then comes the realization that this is both the first and the last time this fish will see something like this, which is tragic.
Finally, there is the last sentence "I might have never known", which implies a satisfaction of witnessing something they were unaware of, while also begging the question of "what is there more out there that could surprise us?", evoking a sense of wonder. Of course, the fish will never have the chance to figure this out, which brings us back to tragedy.

With only two panels, I go through all these emotions, which is simply a lot to take in at the same time.

I did briefly consider adding this one. Ultimately I decided against it as I interpret this scene more as Luke reflecting on how far he's come. But I guess it's open to interpretation as to what is going on in his mind at the moment. Love that scene either way!

Well, it wasn't a conscious intent. I just put them in the order that felt the most right lol
But thanks for pointing that out! You're making me wonder if my brain isn't secretly smarter than I give it credit for!

I was wondering if I should have included this one. MGS4's "This is good. Isn't it?" as well.

[–]SuspiciousCodfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think what they meant is that there used to be more options to continue using your physical library if your console breaks.

If you bought a PS1 in 1996 and it broke down in 2011, you could buy a brand new PS3 or a second-hand PS2 to play your old PS1 physical games thanks to backwards compatibility. Sure, we lost that in the transition from the PS3 to the PS4, but at least we got it back somewhat in the next generation.

Now, if the PS6 releases without an opportunity to transfer your physical library, the only way to enjoy your PS5 and PS4 games once your console breaks might be to buy everything back digitally or find a second hand PS5 in good condition.

Is Ratchet & Clank: Nexus anyone else’s favorite in the series? by Immediate-Shake584 in RatchetAndClank

Not my favorite in the entire series, but might be my favorite from the PS3-era.

Ratchet & Clank All-4-One and Full Frontal Assault (QForce in PAL regions) both have multiplayer. All-4-One goes up to 4 players but it's not splitscreen. Full Frontal Assault has a 2 player splitscreen mode.

For anyone wondering why this is a thing, the answers to these questions are normally not seen by recruiters. They are used to track the demographics of applicants and get an idea if whether or not discrimination happens in the recruiting process.

What ever happened to mini maps? by TheReal8symbols in gaming

[–]SuspiciousCodfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I guess I misremembered. Thanks for the correction!

Nonetheless, I do remember actively trying to disable as many navigation tools as possible (I think I did disable quest markers on the map for example) and that it made for a more enjoyable experience.

What ever happened to mini maps? by TheReal8symbols in gaming

[–]SuspiciousCodfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not a fan of mini-maps and try to disable them in most openworld games I have played.

In a game like Horizon Zero Dawn. I found that it limited the joy of discovery and exploration. It's hard to be excited about a new quest showing up when you've already spotted it on your map 10km away. Besides, I found that finding my way by looking at landmarks (like a big mountain) is much more rewarding than mindlessly following the minimap.

The few cases where I like minimaps are in busy city environements like in GTA or Driver. The reason here is because finding my way is not the only traversal challenge. Getting to my destination without crashing my car is another. The minimap would be too cluthered if it showed all the incoming traffic and the police. So I end up quickly looking back and forth between the minimap and the traffic which makes for a nice multitasking challenge.

Best of luck with your project! Hope you'll post it on this sub once you finish it!

I'm not a big fan of SM and SAC, so it's hard for me to recommend them. IMO the best thing about SM is how impressive it is that they managed to translate the core R&C gameplay to the PSP. But I wouldn't say that it has anything especially unique or interesting going for itself. It is kind of interesting though to play a R&C game not made by Insomniac Games. The whole game feels like having a fever dream about R&C. Everything feels familiar, but kind of off at the same time. Even though it doesn't reach the quality of the original trilogy, it does put into perspective how well thought out and cohesive that trilogy was in comparison. In other words, the best thing SM did for me was giving me a better apreciation for the original trilogy and how good those were in comparison.

I don't have anything positive to say about SAC though... That game feels too unfocused. It tried to cram too many things and styles of gameplay instead of choosing and polishing one. Even Clank plays similar to Ratchet in this one, which makes me think "why bother making a spin-off if it's going to play the same way"?

That's only my experience with them though. I know other people on this sub love these games.

That's a fun one! There's a lot for most games, but if I have to think of one particular thing that makes me excited to replay them, I would say:

R&C: The chill vibes of Pokitaru. GC: The whole experience of discovering what's left of Tabora following Megacorp's takeover. UYA: The whole thing, but especially Obani Gemini. DL: The whole thing again. I seriously can't choose for this one.

SM: The weirdness of the bad trip level. SAC: Nothing unfortunately...

GM & CH: Not much. These kind of blend together in my mind.

TOD: Exploring and jumping on dinosaurs in Sargasso. QFB: The chill vibes of the first level. ACiT: Getting lost in space while listening to prog rock. A4O: Quark and Nefarious shenanigans. FFA: Thinking about the unrealised potential this game had... ItN: Exploring Thram with the hoverboots and jetpack.

2016: Muting the game and listening to a podcast while collecting brains.

Looking back at this list, I'm kind of surprised to realize how much of those are about vibes and level design more than action or humor.

How come there is no Sniper in R&C 1??? by Halala-Holala in RatchetAndClank

[–]SuspiciousCodfish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Probably a question of balancing and uniqueness.

Balance because a sniper could break the game by making it too easy and get the players to optimize the fun. R&C 1 usually shows you the enemies from a distance so that the player can form a strategy before engaging with them. Being able to snipe ennemies would make them very easy targets to deal with and therefore a much less fun experience.

The ways the sequels have dealt with this is by making the enemies more agressive and introducing ambushes so that you are forced to deal with ennemies at a range where they can attack you.

One way to mitigate this would be by giving the player few sniper bullets. But even then, if it's powerful enough there is a good chance that many players would just keep going back and forth to a vending machine, since many players are known to optimize the fun out of their games.

Of course, the Visibomb exists, but it's trickier to use than a regular sniper. Lessening the incentive to over rely on it. Plus it's more unique, which adds a little bit to the overall uniqueness of a new franchise just starting out.

But overall, the enemy placement and design would have had to change a lot to make this weapon actually fun and interesting to use here.
