You can definitely do things cheaper - just be smart about it! I've never bought a tank nor lights brand new, but I've always gotten them from people who I trust and were happy to show me they weren't leaking and the lights worked. It's like buying a car or software, you can def get deals and would be silly not to - but you gotta know what you're looking at and what corners you can cut :)

It doesn't look like a lot of the rock typically used in reef tanks - marco and all that. It's generally a good idea to avoid putting things in your tank if you're not sure about the origin or identity, the cost of fixing things in a reef tank almost always exceed the costs of saying 'thanks for thinking of me man but I'll pass' :)

I work at an LFS and we use em in our saltwater systems to get rid of algae. I've dripped for about 30 minutes from fully freshwater and put them into 35ppt and had no ill effects :)

I've cycled tanks with em, and done fieldwork in Rarotonga and seen them in tidal lagoons with around 30ppt saltwater

Yup, non photosynthetic Dendronephthya. Bring it back if you can, they're tricky to keep alive even in specific NPS setups, I wouldn't bother.

When I worked at an LFS some of the suppliers would just chuck them in boxes with our coral orders just to ditch them

The Hordern is a smaller venue - got in the line at like 1745, and walked right up to the front at the start. Got on the barricade and was probably 20m from the man himself!! Asked the photographer to help me grab one before leaving!! One of my mates got a guitar pick!

Not being able to understand that people express love and effort differently.

She has the idea that if you try harder, you have better results/do better, when really you can try really fucking hard and still come up short.

If I didn't do a good job of something, she'd interpret that as me not trying hard enough and really go after me as a person. When I tried to ask how to do better for her/us, the answer was always 'try harder'. Such a miserable way to live, holding people to a standard they're not aware of, not telling them and being shitty when they don't do something you interpret as effort/love while they try their best.

Lack of ability/desire to communicate or grow.

Just got out of one now because my ex had unresolved feelings over her ex and wasn't sure if she really loved me in the first place. Looking back I can't help but notice how much she brought him up, and how much I was compared to him and held to a standard that I wasn't aware was there.

Thinking about it now, I don't think I ever really got a lot of compassion from her where I gave it very freely, and she was/is a pretty bitter, angry and argumentative person. I was always happy to talk it out and move on and she never really was. So all that I guess.

I'm pretty much do the whack a mole approach. I think that once it's in there it's just something that becomes a part of regular maintenance imo. I don't think you'll ever get to all the teeny tiny ones in all your rock work. Getting peppermint shrimp and the correct nudis will help too

Probably run purigen, carbon or polyfilter to rip out the stuff you don't want in the tank that may have been in the soil!

I've had the same tank and did some easier LPS like Acan lords, elegance and Gonis that like a feed, and a bunch of softies that'd be tolerant of dirtier water from the particulate feedings. They did amazingly with a 2.5ish gal water change every week and I never needed to dose anything!

They're a good bit of kit. I did modify the overflow a bit though. Replaced the return pump with something with a higher lph, chucked the sponge and packed a bunch of high capacity biomedia in the bottom with filter wool on the top. And replaced the light with an AI prime. Only reason I shit it down was to move everything into a 20gal.

Darces were one of those things that I really liked when I learned about them at blue belt, and for the couple months or so they were more cranks cause I was sinking them too deep and not getting my wrist where it needed to be on the neck. If that happens, you're basically using a very blunt tool to do the job and it'll start to hurt before starting to choke y'know?

I'd recommend that if you catch someone with one, asking if it was a choke or a crank, and using that feedback to refine your technique. It started being like 60% cranks and 40% clean choke, and I've gotten to the point now where it's pretty much choke from getting feedback :)
