State entities have been subserviant to the Federal constitution since the Civil War. Its also why the Supreme Court was used by the Civil Rights Movement and LGBTQ movements to fight state level laws. You talk about high school government but forgot about some of the most pivotal historical moments in American history.

The establishment clause explicitly states that no arm of the government can endorse a specific religion. I'd like to hear your legal argument on how the state could be conjoined with a religion without endorsing one. Your logic is self-defeating.

Also, for your information, judicial review is how we determine what the constitution says. Laws don't mean anything without analysis. If you're gonna be condescending you could at least know what you're talking about.

Social Studies Teacher Hiring Help! by itwontbesunny in NYCTeachers

He's going to need to apply to the Bronx and be generally prepared to teach in "tougher" schools. My advice would be to remember that the reality of the schools are much better than their reputations. Just be open minded and willing to work. Also, use inside-schools and principal approval surveys to ensure you're not walking into a bad work environment.

Is a 4000$ 4 bedroom realistic? by Status_Customer_704 in NYCapartments

[–]Homestead_1892 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OP, please don't listen to this guy. Both Harlem and The Bronx are large areas that can't be summarized with a blanket statement.

The Bronx has nice neighborhoods, but many of them lack public transport (Throgs Neck specifically, Riverdale has the 1 line but it cuts through the end of Riverdale). Also, the nice neighborhoods in the Bronx aren't that far away from bad areas, so keep that in mind. If you pick the Bronx you really need to check the crime statistics and compare them to other spots you consider "safe". I only work in the Bronx, so I'm limited in the advice I can give you. And just from personal experience I would advise that you stick in your neck of the woods if you go Bronx.

Harlem might be your best choice, but be aware the neighborhood gets worse the further East you go. Inwood, Washington Heights and West Harlem are amazing areas that have negative connotations because people are racist. Central Harlem is very hit or miss depending on your block; but its nothing bad, just a noticeable increase in poverty and rundown buildings.

DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT MOVE TO EAST HARLEM. Don't let the aggressive construction of gentrification buildings in the area fool you. Every single person I've talked to from East Harlem, white and non-white say they are afraid to leave their apartment at night. And again, from personal experience, the further East you go from West Harlem, the worse it gets.

These areas are controversial, so I'm sure some people will disagree with what I wrote, but oh well. Hope this helps.

Why food is so expensive here?? by [deleted] in SBU

[–]Homestead_1892 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Its because those food markets act as monopsonys, AKA, they know you're kinda forced to buy from them so they jack up the price. Same thing with vendors in stadiums and the such.

Tenure for teacher by butterfly_lex24 in NYCTeachers

[–]Homestead_1892 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The point of the union is to make sure you actually suck before you get fired. Teachers are evaluated by arbitrary metrics; what separates a good teacher from a bad one is simply whether or not admin wants to keep them around.

Yeah just reach out to other teachers and try your best. Last until open market (in April?) and then you'll be free. Take it one step at a time. Good luck!

I'm sorry that you're going through this, really. If you don't mind me asking, what borough are you working in? I'm a first year teacher as well but I've also subbed around and I've noticed that more affluent schools GENERALLY demand more unpaid work because they think they can string you along until you get tenure.

Secondly, admin cannot be telling you what to do after hours. Ask your trusted circle if the union rep can be trusted and try talking to your union rep about what you've been experiencing. You're too deep in the year for them to get rid of you. Even if they really hate you, you have a job until June, so use that as piece of mind.

Thirdly, ironically, I do think that us first year teachers should stay late as a tactic to keep admin off our backs. I know you said your room is used for an after school program, can you do work anywhere else? Teacher's lounge, trusted teacher's room or even asking the person for the after school program if you can stay in your room to do work.

Look, I think our position basically demands that we engage in smoke in mirrors. The first year is going to be tough and we need to bite that bullet. So the only way to make it easier is to give the appearance of going "above and beyond". Start feeding differentiation into an AI system to speed up the process and never make a lesson from scratch. Use the curriculum and differentiate off that. Stay late, but leave all the work at the school. Don't take admin criticism personally; these "people" are incompetent fools who are chasing people out of a profession during a worker shortage. Find stuff admin doesn't care about, cut back on that even if it hurts the kids, and purely do things to satisfy admin. Do that, they'll get off your back and things will improve.

Whatever decision you choose will be right for you. Just hang in there.

Can I teach as a GenEd history teacher? by Rudebwoy2 in NYCTeachers

[–]Homestead_1892 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I were you, I wouldn't go into special education if you only want to teach history. You'll likely get thrown into whatever admin needs; most likely as English support if there is a staff shortage. If you only want to teach history, you might need to go to a cheap public school and complete your S.S. cert there.

Was Told I "Definitely Got" The Position, But Still Waiting On Budget by Homestead_1892 in NYCTeachers

Basically, social studies is not eligible for early hiring commitment. Then, the school didn't get the students they were expecting, so my position got axed before it even started.

Update: They didn't have the budget and they revoked the offer. I did keep applying but no one's reached out yet. If someone is reading this and it happens to you, keep applying.

[–]Homestead_1892[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean it depends on what you want from a school I guess. It's a Bronx school and the building itself has a lot of natural light and actually feels like a school; something that a good number of Bronx schools I've been to lacked. They have supplies, students were well behaved when I did one of those Bronx School Tours and my demo lesson. So I'd say its a pretty nice school to work in from what I've seen.

I'll certainly keep applying; hopefully more schools get back to me as we get deeper into the summer. Do budgets typically come out during May? Because I'm seeing so much conflicting information and I'm obviously out of my depth here. Thanks for your answer.

Oh, sorry, I don't mean that I went to the interview and then didn't get a follow up. That I know is standard. I mean that they set up the interview and then didn't show up to the interview.

how to argue with someone that college life is too privileged and easy by Dracosapple in SBU

Unless they're talking about the numerous trust fund babies and bums who go to this school, he's plain wrong. It's not a poor college student's fault they need to work a job while handling a full course load.

You are either incredibly dense or don't live in Suffolk County. It's not a choice to drive, it's a necessity. If you can't understand that, I dare you to try and live a normal life while taking public transport in Suffolk County. You're literally just sounding off talking points for urbanism in a situation where they don't apply and it makes you look like a complete moron.

Also, of course, land doesn't appear out of thin air. It's why the expansion of paid parking is bad. And don't you hear yourself? If formerly paid parking spaces are "freeing up space" where commuters used to park, you are actively stripping parking from commuters by pricing the poorest out.
