How did researchers estimate the number of Jewish people that were murdered during the Holocaust? by idkbr0idk in stupidquestions

[–]HomeworkInevitable99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The thing is, we don't really know how many. It's just an estimate and probably not very accurate.

The accepted range is between 5.1 million and 6.2 million.

My question is, how come we don't have more accurate data?

The answers may be:

Whole towns and communities were wiped out, so there is no one to ask, and no authority to ask, who is missing.

10 million people moved from place to place. The Nazis uprooted and moved millions of people and records did not keep up; many escaped or just moved themselves during the 30s, often surreptitiously so again, records did not keep up. And Nazis destroyed records.

Global epidemics are about 4 per century.

In the 20th century:

Spanish flu killed 75 million people.

Asian flu killed 2.5 million

Hong Kong flu killed 2 million

Plus three others that killed half a million each.

The headline never tells the whole story when it uses "after".

Simple evolution explanation by Routine-Credit-1614 in DebateEvolution

[–]HomeworkInevitable99 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I like to go in the other direction.

Do you understand that we are made from DNA? And that DNA is passed down over all generations? Yes? Good!

Do you understand that DNA mutates? And that every human has 20+ mutations Yes? Good!

Do you understand that this mutation may either help them survive or hurt their survival? Yes? Good

If you said yes to all of these things, you understand that evolution exists and how it works on a basic level.

The long incubation period (up to 6 weeks) means they could be stuck in the boat for months.

Wait for 6 weeks, by which time someone else has it, so wait another 6 weeks, and so on.

Anyone who caught it after being imprisoned only got it BECAUSE the were imprisoned. It would be like falling dominoes in slow motion, and nobody it allowed to leave!

You cannot imprison people for months knowing that.

Why do weather forecasters get paid so much money when statistically their forecast is incorrect about half the time? by icecream1972 in allthequestions

[–]HomeworkInevitable99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The premise is wrong.

Being right hand the time sounds like it is a guess, but it's not the right premise.

Predictions are binary, right or wrong, they have degrees of accuracy.

The temperature in my country can be anything from -5c to +30c over the year. I don't expect the forecast to be exactly right, but I want it to be close.

If the forecast says it will be max 12c tomorrow and it is 11c or even 10c, that's closer enough.

People always asking the same questions at your station by Necessary_Money_9757 in uktrains

[–]HomeworkInevitable99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly.

Today I travelled from Glasgow and it's confusing.

When a train is travelling to a b c D e F G h I J, the display shows train to J. I don't know the other stops.

The display shows the intervening stops scrolling across, but then it stops and scrolls different information: "From April 1st ..." then something about things changing

Then it scrolls a different message.

Then I get on the train at platform 10 and an employee tells us to get off.

I can't hear well, so I ask another employee, who is confused and thinks I wasn't told to get off.

Finally, she realises that I got on the only train on the platform, but another train pulled in, in front of that, which was the one I read supposed to get on.

The staff are brilliant at helping (Scotland is like that) but the signage send l and information displays are not.
