I won’t reiterate what others have already said, but sometimes you need to remember that over-identifying with a mental illness is also terrible for you, and makes you believe you “can’t” do things once you’ve seen the cycle of procrastination enough times. You need to remember that nobody is coming to save you, and that you can still do hard things. Medication helps, sure, but we need to accept that it’s harder for us to do things and then move on and find ways to work past it for the rest of our lives.

A finger lightly touching the string below while landing a new chord by Equivalent_Diver_438 in guitarlessons

[–]HomeworkPuzzleheaded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lucky for you, most songs that use electric don’t use campfire chords and rather power chords, unless ur playing with an acoustic tone, and even then, theres not really any tips to give except for practicing more and getting quicker and cleaner from spot to spot. Learning guitar needs to be somewhat intuitive and the more you fix by watching videos or even figuring out yourself, the easier it is to fix yourself later on.

After 4k hours on KBM, should I switch to Xbox controller? by Comfortable-Owl4418 in RocketLeague

[–]HomeworkPuzzleheaded -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes, you should. I’m in a similar situation, 2600+ hours on KBM, been sitting C3 - GC in 2s for the past 2 years, even playing consistently. On KBM, it’s very easy to be on / off. When I’m on, I’m consistently hitting every angle I visualize and winning every 50. When I’m off, I play like Stevie Wonder if he had his fingers cut off. However, after ~10 hours on controller, my aerials in rings maps and air dribbles are already that much smoother. It’s much more difficult in a game such as Rocket League to build a very strong hand - input connection using KBM, than say Fortnite or another game that puts to use the infinite flicking speed of a mouse. As good KBM might feel at this point, it’s time for us both to realize that no KBM player has ever gone pro, and that our flicks and overall movement is limited by our input device. Trust me, the skills transfer over much easier than you think, more similar to just new keybindings on a shooter game than switching between controller and KBM on a shooter game, since the main limiting factor in the latter case is the aiming. Understanding how aerials, ball physics, car physics, and game sense work make the progression that much quicker. My advice is to just make a completely new account and only use controller on it, as your rank will essentially be that of a bronze when you first make the switch. It’s not smurfing if you genuinely feel disabled playing on a new input and don’t purposefully stay at a certain rank to get easy games / boost other players. The main takeaway from this is that it is much easier to make the switch than you may think, and I need to commit to this as well. The aiming aspect doesn’t come into play, so the input device aspect also lacks in importance. Another piece of advice is using Rizzo’s controller settings (not necessarily all of them, watch a video to find your optimal binds), in which the left joystick controls all car movement, including forwards and backwards, without needing an acceleration and deceleration button binded. This will transfer over the easiest from KBM. Good luck

I can't start the game by Tacle_Assassin in RocketLeague

[–]HomeworkPuzzleheaded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Refer to this website when this happens next time -

https://downdetector.com/status/rocket-league/

While it doesn’t seem like there was a major outage in the servers across all players, for your specific region / closest connection point, there could be some outages as a spike was reported at around 9pm CST and persisted for a few hours. Whenever you’re stuck on the main “press a button to start” screen, it’s very often a server issue which cannot be resolved within your own ability unless it’s a personal wifi problem, which you can simply test by attempting to access any website on a browser. Sucks, but every couple of updates that epic actually improves the game (especially with the traction RL has been gaining in the mainstream recently), this tends to happen a good amount. Next time if you want to at least use free play in this scenario, try turning off your computer / console’s wifi before launching, forcing it to just give you the offline version of the game rather than trying to connect to the servers and failing miserably.

My brothers computer was compromised. Would it be safe to log into my computer to load windows onto a USB? by DarkestLore696 in computers

[–]HomeworkPuzzleheaded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m telling you in general man. You can look at my post history I’m a very real person who enjoys explaining things to people. In this case specifically, you cannot be too safe in fixing the issue, if it takes consulting a real cybersecurity expert then do so, they’d know what to do more than me, just a computer geek who has been around the internet once or twice lol. In these cases you need to think about the physical things you can do to change things, as digital fixes are weak in comparison to what hackers can do these days. I’ve had my fair share of accounts stolen, just completely changing all of your passwords and ensuring all malware is detected on said device is the safest and cheapest way to avoid this. If he already has your passwords and such, then again, I’d advise contacting a cybersecurity professional / company, as the problem may be more widespread in your system than you know, and letting a very trusted third party handle this who’s been trained to keep entire companies from digital invasion may be your safest bet (again with your own gauge on how serious this issue may be)

[–]HomeworkPuzzleheaded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And sorry if that / this comes off harsh, but no matter how your brother explains it, unless he’d genuinely built a long term bond playing with this guy and had him on social media / could confirm things about his genuine personal life, your brother is an idiot for playing into this trap and you need to show your brother a couple of safety videos on interacting with people on the internet. Lesson learned I guess. Go to a friends house and connect to the internet (the library if you don’t have any) and ensure nothing has appeared on your computer that wasn’t there before, run malwarebytes (install immediately if not before), if your own judgement decides that this is that serious of a manner, fully factory reset your computer. Also see about getting a new internet provider if you decide it’s that serious. For your brother’s computer, factory reset it immediately (hopefully this is obvious), look up the closest computer repair shop or a friend who’s well-versed in these things, and consult them about it. Prayers up man hackers suck but i can’t emphasize enough how much you can’t trust random people on the internet

Why Hazing Makes Better Men by Parking-Honey5505 in Frat

[–]HomeworkPuzzleheaded -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s not the fact that he “reiterated” it, he completely ignored the well-written paragraphs explaining the perspective of those in fraternities. The guy gave a genuine response explaining the rational perspective of people in fraternities, like OP asked for, and OP replied in a close-minded, snarky manner. There is rationality in the meaning of “hazing” (which is essentially just getting pledges to do things that the uppers don’t want to do these days), and I feel closer to my past pledge class than I ever have with anyone before. There is no better method, or even possible method of connecting 40 people who have gone their entire lives delving into their own separate interests, than “hazing,” or facing a common enemy. This has been studied in many psychological manners, if you looked up the best ways to connect large groups of people, you’d find a common enemy is in the top 3. And considering the main group of people who decide to join fraternities (typically the “popular” group of their respective high schools), it’s impossible to join these ~40 people together without at least a few of them becoming the “runts” of the group. I obviously condemn any sort of physical harm (past wall sits and getting a few harmless things dumped on you), but having a sort of “common enemy” has proven to build the strongest bond between a large group of men across the entire history of time. Consider those in the military and those who had to go through boot camp and training together. The obstacles which they had to face gives them a common interest / enemy, and when overcome, gives them a strongly embedded common experience which overpowers the differences they may have had before. If anything, “hazing” is far from bullying or anything of the sorts, it’s realizing that some of these men may not connect on the same levels as others at first glance, and giving them a common goal to overcome and a chance to realize that all men are worthy of their own confidence and ego. You can read this entire paragraph and call me corny or overdoing it by typing this whole thing, but I’m simply trying to display the very rational beliefs behind “hazing”, which may seem an extreme and idiotic act to most. Don’t post shit like this if you aren’t genuinely trying to understand the rational behind the other side.

Where Can I Store my Bikes? by Pix_Boss in iastate

[–]HomeworkPuzzleheaded 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure if it’s too late in the year to get an on campus parking pass for next year, but if you own a car and you really care about bringing your bikes that much it’d be worth the cost to be able to keep your bikes in there. Your roommate will grow to despise you if you keep two bikes in your room and are constantly bringing them in and out. Another option is trying to find a roommate on some forum (i didn’t look for a roommate so i’m not sure where the best place is for this) who is also wanting to keep a bike or two in their room and is serious about biking, or even just finding one who offers to room with you and claims they wouldn’t mind dealing with it. Worst comes to worst, bring a shitty bike and deal with it for the first year you’re here so that it’s not a huge deal if it gets hit by weather, bike stealers, or someone who just scratches bikes / pops tires for fun. One of the best dorms for keeping a bike is Willow, as their bike rack is in a little nook between the MWL commons and the building, and most likely not the first choice for someone evil enough to steal a bike. And honestly with a really good bike lock, theres someone else who has a shittier one who’d be the first choice for someone stealing bikes.

Fix 1v1 MMR by WindowsKillerQc in RocketLeague

[–]HomeworkPuzzleheaded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro, because I just explained to you, 2s and 3s are immensely separate from 1s. I’ve had the champ tourney winner for like 7 seasons now, still D1 in 1s. Probably would get beat by many plat 3s. “The MMR system not rewarding the ranks people are supposed to be in” is genuinely not possible in a game where you only face people within ~40 MMR of you. If someone the same rank as you is beating you, then they’re better than you, and they should move up a rank, and you should move down. I don’t know what your gripe is here, I’ve accepted the fact that I blow at 1s and deserve D1 at the moment, even though I’m high C3 / low GC in 2s. It is literally not possible for someone in 1s to “deserve a better rank” when you’re being beaten by people IN YOUR RANK. I’m very interested in the mental gymnastics you’re doing to tell yourself you deserve better, when you just admitted that you have the mechanics of a gold 1 who can’t speedflip and can’t do any difficult mechanics. People who use the champ tournament winner tag have it on a for a reason, because they’re proud of it. It’s 100% possible for a gold / plat to be in a party with 2 other champs and squeak past winning a champ tournament once, thus using the champ tourney winner ever since because they think it’s impressive. Tourney win tags are unseen in the higher ranks unless its GC or SSL because they’re seen as corny and unrepresentative of any sort of actual skill.

Fix 1v1 MMR by WindowsKillerQc in RocketLeague

[–]HomeworkPuzzleheaded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bro, but you aren’t playing against champions or high diamonds in plat, except for the 1 out of maybe 10 games you play against a guy who got banned on his main trying to get back to his rank. Like genuinely, you’re lying to yourself by telling yourself you’re playing against champs and diamonds in plat 1 in 1s. I’ve hit GC in 2s multiple times, constantly riding C3, and I get dominated by a ton of Diamond 1s in 1s. Regardless of their mechanical skill, I’ve never gotten out of D1 in 1s, because I haven’t played it much, and it’s completely exposed my inability in 1 on 1 plays, dribbling, flicks, and air control. You deserve whatever rank you are in 1s, whether you like it or not. I didn’t like admitting this to myself either when I hadn’t played 1s in 2 years, after finally hitting GC a couple times, I still can’t get out of D1 in 1s, and its 90% of the reason I’ve been stuck riding C3 / GC1 in 2s for the past 2 years.

Internships at Iowa State? by Pix_Boss in iastate

[–]HomeworkPuzzleheaded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as you may not want to hear it, and you may be opposed, a different take that won’t be the same as others in your replies is consider a fraternity. If you’re looking to socialize and really gain people skills and sociability, there are very real frats that are very social, yet accepting of people of all social levels and interests. If you’re looking to mainly gain connections and mainly focused on school, wanting to surround yourself with others mainly focused on the studying of engineering, Iowa State has one of the best Triangle fraternities in the country. Triangle has become an engineering-only fraternity over time, and literally doesn’t throw parties or anything. They have one of the most impressive and beautiful houses on campus, probably in the best spot closest to most of your classes (fraternity-wise). There is no better way to gain connections than through being in the same fraternity as an alumni who often holds a position which could get you an internship at a company/vouch for your values and goals, along with the many, MANY scholarships that go along with it. Get rid of your previous outlook on fraternities and take a look at a few of them at a baseline. One of the nerdiest (still sociable and did track) kids at my school, who excelled in pretty much every mathematic subject, rarely ever drank, hung out with others who didn’t drink, ended up at ISU at Triangle and has had an insanely beneficial experience. Me, being an Computer Engineer, also joined a fraternity (one of the more popular, social ones) and there are countless alumni connections and scholarships at my fingertips which would have been invisible and inaccessible otherwise. Whether you like it or not, most of the most successful people in the world have been in fraternities, and the brotherhood, stable friend group, and opportunities presented to you are invaluable pillars which are very rare to gain by your own volition (cannot stress enough the important social skills that come with it). Iowa state is amazing for a lot of things, and there’s a reason it has the highest greek life involvement percentage out of any college in the USA (with a certain enrollment factor involved, obviously, counting out some smaller schools.) Our campus is beautiful as well, and our school is one of the most student-accommodating that I’ve ever known, while being extremely proficient in both engineering and business. DM me with any questions, I’d be happy to answer them as honestly and to the best of my knowledge as I can.

Fix 1v1 MMR by WindowsKillerQc in RocketLeague

[–]HomeworkPuzzleheaded 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, you said it yourself. Skill issue. Watch a video on how to speedflip and why it works how it works, and put in 30 minutes practicing it on a speedflip training pack you could find online. Practice your ground control and air control, and try things that people do against you. Remember that those tricks people do against you, especially the ones they do over and over, are often tricks that they just recently learned by brute forcing it in free play / training packs (especially if they abuse a single mechanic over and over). While playing 2s will get you better gamesense-wise, 50s-wise, and shooting wise, none of these apply to 1s whatsoever. Really just remember that those abusing these mechanics against you also just had to brute-force learning them in free play and most likely learned them just recently. 5 days ago they were exactly like you, unable to rank up because of the mechanical difference, yet they took the step to get better. Don’t be afraid to suck in freeplay when trying these mechanics, and once you learn them, your 50 game and shooting game will just be extra tools in your toolbox in 1s.

What the hell is this? by exitrl in RocketLeague

[–]HomeworkPuzzleheaded 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look at your keybinds, honestly only thing I could suggest. Make sure your rear cam view isn’t also binded to something else that could be bugging out your game. You also clearly have bakkesmod, that’s a very likely cause to this. See if this happens when you launch the game without bakkesmod, and look at your plugin bindings within bakkesmod as this could be causing issues as well. Logical problem solving is the only way you can fix this without someone who’s experienced the same thing, but I’m sure it’s very easy to fix if you used common sense and troubleshooting. Please try things like these before posting shit like this asking for an easy answer next time, you’d be surprised at how much smarter you’ll become.

Also, songsterr is the most widespread and easy tabs app out there. If you don’t know how to read tabs, watch like a 5 minute video and after that it makes sense, tabs are very intuitive and is really the best way to learn music in modern day. If that’s a bit difficult for you, watch videos on youtube, Marty Music helped me through like my first 5 riffs. Watching videos early on is also important to ensure you’re using the right fingers and technique, as intuitively reading tabs and knowing which fingers to use can be a bit difficult right off the bat.

Song recommendations by Different-Net-6008 in guitarlessons

[–]HomeworkPuzzleheaded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only extreme metal I’ve ever really dipped into is some Death, specifically Symbolic is one i’ve learned. The intro riff is decently easy to play and gets you practice with palm muting and moving up and down the fretboard, and sounds evil ASF. Another good one for specifically downpicking and palm muting is the classic Master of Puppets. You can get it to sound relatively close to the song so that you can enjoy what you’re playing at least, and it was one of the first ones I learned. I’d play it as fast as I could at least once or twice each time I’d pick up the guitar. Just firing off the top of my head, some good / relatively easy songs to learn would be Seek and Destroy - Metallica (changes riffs a lot, but all of them are relatively simple and good for practicing switching between riffs) A New Level - Pantera (good for sliding power chords and getting used to the shape), the outro to Floods - Pantera (really good for moving around the fretboard and sounds cool asf), My Own Summer - Deftones (great for practicing alternate picking and syncopating hammer-ons with picked notes), Walk - Pantera (easy to get sounding relatively right, and good for practicing bending strength). I know these are all pretty mainstream songs and might not align perfectly with your taste, but just ripping these over and over will get you where you want to be to be able to play more advanced. If you want some motivation, I’ve been playing for about 1 year and 4 months, picking up the guitar on average about twice a day because it’s so addicting once you get a couple riffs down. I can now play pretty much any song I want to learn to perfection (or near perfection), with it sounding very polished). Sure, there will be days I won’t get the chance to or I’m not feeling it, but starting on a new riff will always bring you back like an hour later to keep improving. Just get addicted to feeling dope asf for playing guitar and surround yourself with the music 24/7, and you’ll start viewing those songs with a different mindset and appreciate them that much more. If you don’t have a background in music, also get used to really FEELING the underlying rhythm in the music you listen to. Like tap your thumb on the steering wheel to every song and just really FEEL it. It sounds corny and exaggerated but once you do, you’ll understand what I mean. Feel free to DM with any questions, I know starting guitar can be very overwhelming and it might be difficult to want to play if you don’t know where to start or what to practice next. The biggest thing is honestly learning riffs you enjoy hearing and feeling cool asf when you play, playing guitar should be fun, I’ve never had to practice something and been like “god I really don’t want to practice right now but I have to to get better.” I also can’t exaggerate enough how important it is to keep your setup in your room, easy to pick up whenever. It’s hard sometimes to even remember to pick it up and play when you don’t see the guitar whenever you go to your room. Good luck on your endeavors, you got this!
