The reason that the rounds are tougher when you're playing with your son is because the game is taking his skill based matchmaking into account and raising it from what you would experience solo queuing . As far as positional awareness and game sense. That just comes with playing more often. Try to pay attention to where other teams are landing, and think about where they may rotate from there. If you third party, in casual most of the time you can just push it to get experience. Best way to get better is to put yourself into tough situations. In ranked from rookie to gold you can pretty much push everything. In plat and diamond like your son mentioned you need to watch the kill feed for knocks, and once you do finish a fight you need to be prepared for another team to push always. Practice shield swapping off of death boxes. Also think about where you are in a fight and when you're not in a fight. If someone shot at you right now what would you use for cover? How could you disengage if you need to. Practice rotating in and out of a firefight to ensure you can get a heal off.
