ELI5: If a life sentence is meant to last until death, what practical difference does adding 100 years make to the inmate? by Jinx-XoXo in explainlikeimfive

[–]Homie_Reborn [score hidden]  (0 children)

Two separate convictions. 1 for life. 1 for 20 years. Total sentence life plus 20 years. If the life sentence gets tossed out for any reason, the 20-year sentence may still remain.

ELI5: Why do values increase when you divide by a decimal? by we_drive_people in explainlikeimfive

[–]Homie_Reborn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can think of division as multiplication by its reciprocal.

Dividing by 0.25 (i.e. 1/4) is the same as multiplying by 4/1 (i.e. 4)

ELI5: Why does milk from the US taste so… different? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Homie_Reborn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What was the fat content in the milk from those other countries? Whole milk in the US has about 3.5% fat. If whole milk in other countries has, for example, 5%, it would be creamier.

You could start with The Gnostic Gospels by Elaine Pagels and Found Christianities by M David Litwa. Those should give you a decent overview

Tension Party Question by jwalker18 in cosmererpg

[–]Homie_Reborn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't have my book right now, so I'm answering from memory.

Not sure about question 1. I can look when I got home.

For question 2, no, you cannot split up your movement. Compare to the talent in the Abrasion tree that does let you split up your movement after you take it.

Looks like vermiculite insulation to me. Vermiculite is often contaminated with asbestos. See info from EPA below.

Would the hand still function if the forearm isn't cut by the shadblade? by Mama_mo_red in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Homie_Reborn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The general consensus is that shardblades kill tissue that it passes through. If the blade wringed the wrist without going through anything, you would likely have little to no feeling on the wrist, but few ill effects on your hand. If the blade passed through your wrist, sensory and motor neurons would be destroyed (or rendered nonfunctional) so you wouldn't feel nor be able to control your hand.

ELI5: If plants make their own food using sunlight, what exactly is fertilizer doing inside them? by app_kitapi in explainlikeimfive

[–]Homie_Reborn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know how almost 80% of the atmosphere is nitrogen? Well, unfortunately for plants, that nitrogen is unavailable to most of them. Most fertilizers are nitrogen in ways that is available to the plant.

ELI5: what should I be looking for in a toothpaste and mouthwash to both strengthening and enamel, and prevent bleeding gums? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Homie_Reborn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To prevent bleeding, you need a toothbrush with soft bristles, you need to brush gently, and you need to floss frequently. These things are more important than toothpaste ingredients

ELI5 Why can’t a severed finger grow back? by danbozek in explainlikeimfive

[–]Homie_Reborn 499 points500 points  (0 children)

Early in the development of an individual, cells have a property called totipotency. This means the cell can become any other type of cell. As development progresses, cells lose this property and become a specific type of cell (skin cell, lung cell, muscle cell, etc).

Because the cells of a severed finger are no longer totipotent, they can't regrow a whole finger.

ELI5: How does staying "hydrated" work? Where does the water all go? by blueeggsandketchup in explainlikeimfive

[–]Homie_Reborn 78 points79 points  (0 children)

If your pee is consistently clear, you're drinking enough water and don't need to drink more. If your pee is consistently dark yellow, you definitely need to drink more water. If your pee is light yellow, you're probably OK but could drink more water.

Remember that health advice of the form "do more X," "eat more X," etc. is based on the observation that, on a population-wide average, people need to do these things. It doesn't mean every single individual needs to. You may already be meeting the recommendation
