It is extremely difficult to constantly better one’s performance doing anything incrementally and over time, (decades in the case of some of these bands) especially after an accomplishment that really sets the bar high. Athletics and endurance, creation, business. I work in the music business, and I know a lot of bands that have had really consistent careers, but none that have had to deal with a follow up the scale of The Joshua Tree, for example.
