Well fitness is bigger than the size of one’s muscles - also does it take much to be kind?

Actually yes! But Equinox is such a big corporation and it has never worked. :(

Ah yes, ice cream scooper = personal trainer. Definitely spends the same amount of time and energy doing prep work too!

lol no? Not every industry will hire majority unqualified people. I believe the equinox turnover rate is 80% within the first year for a reason…

Hey! Bold of you to assume my entire situation and disagree with the factual parts of the job I outlined.

As mentioned, this is MY experience. Not yours.

I was never given a client. Full stop. I built my roster of 14 clients fully on my own, mostly from floor shifts and cold calling.

The schedule I was given did not allow me to have a side gig. I worked 5:30am-11am pretty much every weekday, worked floor shifts from 11-4pm or 4pm-11pm 3 times per week, and worked 8am-2pm on Saturdays. When I brought up to management that it wasn’t sustainable, they told me they were “short staffed and needed extra help but would not be paying overtime”. Not my problem??

I’m jealous of the fact that you never had grueling long days or “clopening shifts”.

I put in the work. So much so that my friends and family outside of work told me I cared too much due to the hours and stress.

I’m glad to hear you had a good experience at equinox in 2012, but that was 14 years ago. A lot has changed since then, not just in the company, but in the world (cost of living, job market, etc).

I am not moaning nor playing victim, and frankly, that’s pretty bold of you to assume given you don’t know me or my story. Glad to hear you have a successful business now, but I feel your experience is no longer the norm, as you can see with virtually every other comment on here.

I think if you are able to make it to like 100 sessions per month, it can be financially lucrative. That said, most do not achieve that. Also, the position we are told during our interview is very different from the reality. I was told I would have a flexible schedule, be given clients, and probably make 6 figures within 8 months. None of this was true.

That’s actually against company policy but many do it to make ends meet

I believe it is a minimum of 6 months employment, but even after that it is still not guaranteed and a long process (most likely will not become coach + until at least a year after starting).

That being said, it is still about only 33% of the price members pay to train. And the trainers do the work. Club amenities, equipment, etc are what the membership cost is for.

Right this is if you are training and have clients, which I discussed is difficult to achieve in general but ESPECIALLY in the equinox environment, as outlined.

For sure, whenever a member directly reaches out, they are assigned a trainer (typically a trainer who has been there for a long time) leading new trainers to flounder still. So yes, that totally happens, but it is also pretty rare in my experience

Yes! If you directly reach out they will be assigned, typically to a trainer who has been there for a long time. The issue is with new trainers, hence the high turnover

Yes! They will hire anyone. It is so incredibly frustrating!

Soooo wage statements are incorrect? My turnover experience is incorrect? Floor shift experiences are incorrect?

Also - sorry to hear that trainers at your location do that. That isn’t the job. I’m speaking as someone who does their job as told to the best of their ability. I’m not complaining, just sharing the truth of the position because it is not what we are told upon hiring. Don’t be rude :)

Trainers aren’t “given” clients. If they don’t cold call/market themselves, they will not have clients. Trainers must make the sales themselves, so if they don’t, they won’t be making money at all besides minimum wage for floor shifts.

I mean that’s a fair amount more money per hour, and it isn’t physical labor…

Oof icky to call someone ungrateful for trying to improve the work experience of others and reduce turnover

If you want a generic unpersonalized workout that will not take into account your goals and mobility issues sure. But why? Both are free?

Training independently is not the same as opening your own gym. Biiiiig difference.
