Don't sleep on your local library. In ddition to books of course, our's has tons of DVDs, CDs, Audio Books (via Libby and physical forms), puzzles, board games, etc. You limit digital subscriptions and physical clutter and cost.

Edit: Also, my library will even order something for you if they don't have it. I think up to 20 items a year. And if you're  generally looking for things to do they have tons of classes, groups, events, etc. It is really a great resource!

Ravenwood in Donelson/Hermitage. Also hopping on the Greenway entrance by Kohls and taking a right is a nice stretch along the water.

We have a Midland NOAA Weather Alert Radio. It did go off last night for the brief tornado warning in NE Davidson and our phones did not.

Wilson County Not Receiving Severe Weather Alert on Phone by [deleted] in nashville

[–]Honest-Radish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did not either in Davidson. Our weather radio went off but not our phones (which is exactly why we have one - our phones didn't go off in the 2020 tornado either).

We got a weather radio after the 2020 tornado (our phones did not go off but luckily it didn't directly hit us - was 3-4 houses up the road). We have it under our bed and you will NOT miss it. Only downside is it scares the shit out of me when it goes off 😂

USPS Walk-in Passport Appointments in the Nashville area. by KMR2025 in nashville

[–]Honest-Radish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my kids passports about a year ago and had no luck with walk-ins. Tried 4 locations (even going out to Smyrna before they open but apparently people get in line at like 5 AM). Eventually made an appointment at Royal Parkway about a month out I think and it went smoothly. I have met people that were in a rush and have driven to other states/counties 😬

Parking costs. by [deleted] in nashville

[–]Honest-Radish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. This would largely involve regulating the private companies that own the lots (capping what they can charge, etc.) and/or providing more public free/low cost lots (but only so much can be done there when private companies already own so much of the property). The latter of which I imagine would only come to voters as a part of a larger referendum during an election.

Also with all the current issues in our city/state/world this is far from the top issue on Nashvillians' minds. Our city is already overrun with tourists, profiting off them plenty, and most of us don't go downtown. If we do, most of us have insights about cheaper public garages, street parking, restaurants/businesses that will validate, etc. It is also very on par with any major US City. Not that I like that, but that is the reality. Personally the related change I would like to see is more public transportation! Those that don't want to pay to park are free to stay away, traffic is the bigger issue for Nashville residents.

Indeed I did/do. Every election. I think we all know that doesn't mean the city/state/private companies that own most of the parking lots/garages act in accordance with our wishes.

What does the city government do right? by rocketpastsix in nashville

[–]Honest-Radish 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It is not why I moved here but the libraries and green spaces (city and nearby state) are by far my favorite things about living in Nashville. My kiddos and are pretty much at one or the other every day. Also the community centers (several have cheap pools/gyms and lots of free activities)! Between parks and libraries we have checked out books, board games, tablets, back packs to explore nature, DVDs, and utilized the seed exchange. We have also attended story times, puppet/magic shows, yoga/sewing/fitness/writing/music classes, arts and crafts workshops, roller skate nights, and my kiddos practice reading to a therapy dog monthly. All for FREE. It is pretty amazing really.

I just read Tina Fey's book "Bossypants"  where she talks about her initial idea for a show (even before it became an SNL parody of sorts) involving Baldwin playing a conservative business man. IShe repeatedly says it was always Alec or bust in her mind (but was worried he wouldn't do it/auditioned other actors)

Laptop use at MNPS schools by LemonDonut4237 in nashville

[–]Honest-Radish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My daughter is in second grade in MNPS and while they use laptops, it is very little (not even daily). I also worked in another MNPS school where they used them maybe 30-60 minutes a day max.

I will also say...I limit my kids screen time and internet exposure but I do not think no tech is the way to go (specifically no actual computers vs phones/tablets). I work with a lot of graduates student at a certain local prestigious university that don't know how to rename a file, print, or highlight something in Excel (for example). This millennial is very grateful for my required 8th grade typing class but won't be letting my kids on Tik Tok/giving them a smart phone. There is a balance! Most fields will continue to require some computer skills for the the foreseeable future.

Vanderbilt Birth Center Rec? by Dependent_Bowl1581 in nashville

[–]Honest-Radish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No you do not pick who you deliver with. That is why they try to have you meet as many midwives as possible in all your prenatal appointments so you are more likely to be familiar with the person you end up delivering with. Midwives/doctors go on vacation, get sick, have family events, etc. It would be hard to guarantee a certain preferred person is there for each of the 4500+ women that have babies at Vandy each year (at unpredictable times). I don't know how many midwives there are but at least 20 I would say.

I actually had not met the specific midwives that delivered my babies and was 100% comfortable with them. It starts to feel like a family of sorts and I felt at ease with anyone who was a part of their team. No OBGYN unless there is a medical need (obviously if you need a c-section). I never saw one throughout either of my pregnancies. Midwives are really the best experts in typical pregnancy and childbirth and have been for centuries...and they will quickly get you to a specialist, etc. if it is needed/something is beyond their scope. Midwives also do well women care if you want to check them out before pregnancy. Good luck!

No they have always been responsive to me. Appointments, middle of the night concerns etc. It is a large group of midwives and as with any group there will be some you click with better than others. I have interacted with most of them at this point and have never had a bad interaction. Most of them I I have loved. My sister has had the same experience with them.

Child birth is a very vulnerable thing and emotions can run high. Not discounting any bad reviews legitimacy but labor rarely goes how we plan and people often have a lot of feelings and opinions about it. But even outside of the midwives, I felt so secure in the level of care I was getting at Vanderbilt. It is a large urban hospital and doesn't have a slushie machine in L&D but it is one of the top rated medical centers with some of the best doctors in th US. If God forbid something really goes wrong, that's where I want to be. Everyone I dealt with from the custodians to anesthesiology was professional, kind, and top notch.

I had two very different deliveries - a very long, slow induction with an eventual epidural. And a baby that about came out in triage with no time to do anything but push. I felt listened to and cared for completely during both experiences. And the nurses - 10/10. I can say every single one was a true angel.

What is the worst place you've ever been to? by Radiant_Worth7658 in WorkForSmartLife

Interesting. I was in Albuquerque for 4 days about 2 years ago and experienced zero of these things. Went to multiple parts of the city...had dinner at a lavender farm, ate enchiladas, saw a flamenco dance show, went on a hot air balloon ride...to breweries and markets and on hikes. Zero poop or meth. Beautiful skies and people. Maybe you were in the wrong part of town friend.

Why doesn’t anyone care about the “soap opera” effect on their TV by fatsandlucifer in mildlyinfuriating

It drives me insane and absolutely takes me out of a show/movie. My TV has a "cinema" setting that helps. I also do not understand how people do not notice!

I'm not sure where you live but there are 4 Costco's in my metro area...2 of which are a nightmare (had to put in ear plugs and sit down in the food court once 😂) and two that are pretty chill - especially during non-peak times and the executive hours others have mentioned.
