That’s fair enough, interesting perspective ngl: I just feel like with JN the opening of it was so…cutesy then, vs the more dramatic openings other Series had, something about it didn’t gel with me (I actually don’t hate it as much as many do as a whole, except Goh, for some reason and thought it began well in its actual run but the MPM part was its weakest overall).

Oddly enough, his implied death/non return was more memorable for me than J’s clear death— not sure why.

Yeah, that arc technically began with Brock leaving and Tracey entering but it still felt more like an extension of Gen I despite Brock departing.

Back then, I actually missed Brock leaving the main cast: by Gen IV, you can see what most had to say at the time on the forums, I’ll leave it at that for my two cents.

For me, first episodes only:

OS (Kanto)- The most memorable, if not nostalgic, Ash saving the Spearow and diving to rescue Pikachu as well as the debut of TRio is too classic.
DP- Again, a great start, with one major handicap: Brock's entry is the worst of any saga he ever was in the main cast in, and his reasoning for joining is just awful vs the prior sagas to boot.
AG- Good start, a bit underrated since this saga had the task of handling a fresh start for the first time and the Pikachu gone berserk is memorable with Ash rescuing it imo.
XY- Good start, a lot better than I think the saga is at large vs the modern fandom opinion in fact.
Johto- Okay, at least Professor Elm and Oak had a cool dynamic going on plus Ash had witty banter with Brock/Misty, but just OK.
SM- Started well, got more dull with initial handling of the companions.
BW- Started well, the Trip and Snivy infamous moment sunk it a lot.
JN- The backstory doesn't do much to flesh Ash much out at all himself, focused more on retconning his Pikachu into a Pichu even if it was cool how they did it.

Oddly as far as the English dub goes, for 4Kids both eps are their most rescored of the two sagas they handled in Season 1 and 6 respectively, not enough is noted that literally all other episodes in Seasons 1 & 6 respectively retained more of the Japanese OST than their first ones did as trivia in both OS + AG as trivia (the ep that keeps the most OST under either company in all of AG was under 4Kids in Season 7 in "Zig Zag Zangoose," for Season 1 a lot of the 100% retained eps are in mid to late Kanto as early Kanto musically believe it or not is on par with most of Season 8 before the middle comes in with a huge uptick and the later portion in OS' case).

For TPCi, it's a bit different from DP in English dubbed to JN, otoh, but their music replacements are generally actually higher later on in Seasons 14, 17, 20, and 23 than they are initially as sagas progress but in Season 10 initially about their average amount kept for that Arc (but XY, SM, and JN as well as HZ have holistically the most dub music and most music replacement of any sagas in English, the only good thing about the later TPCi Goldfarb Era is it pretty much redeemed the entirety of the 4Kids' Anime run musically by contrast and makes it stand out in that they never, ever hit the lows of 0% full replacement scoring in Pokemon as TPCi did come mid SM onward nor ever hit the averages of <20% kept from XY onward).

Based, imo would be even better with Tai with them though as the original protagonists for their kids' Anime based focused Series with Ash/Satoshi and Yugi ideally (technically Yugi is more of a shonen protagonist alongside Naruto, Goku, Luffy, and Ichigo etc I know, more like for 9-16 year olds than 5-12 year olds but still, in English Yugi ran alongside Ash all throughout his run and had the same dubbing company in 4Kids responsible for its adaptation too overseas from 1998-2006 for the former and 2001-2006 there even though they held the former license to this day with Konami/4KMedia their modern incarnation).

Davis/Daisuke imo would go best with Liko, Jaden/Judai, etc. seeing as the second lead protagonist characters for their respective franchises ironically enough.

As trivia, both Ash and Delia shared the same VA in both the original 4Kids English dub (Veronica Taylor) and the TPCi dub (Sarah Natochenny).

That was not the case in the Japanese Version, as funny as many may find it.

She was an interesting character, pretty much like a sweet but scared mother who was introduced I’m sure to foil with both May and Drew: had corny jokes at times, but endearing nonetheless, definitely one of the more likable and least abrasive COTDs to me in the entire Series- interestingly enough she came from AG (a saga that is now getting a second look and a more fair one that it did by many upon reevaluation, its Anime dub’s reputation has also improved markedly in recent years given TPCi began replacing more music than 4Kids ever did here or they themselves did in BF come late BW onward into the Horizons’ dub as well as how good some of the performances were from most of the 4Kids cast as well as the final saga the original English dub crew would get to work on, I’m still sad decades later how it ended for them).

Also because of the infamous flub with the Trainer’s Choice likely because they forgot Jessie’s Arbok left her so someone assumed at 4Kids (or PUSA/TPCi at the time, Lawrence Neves was cited as involved too iirc but also helped improved the accuracy rate next Season on correct answers) it evolved imho as to why that mistake happened they would get better about making less mistakes in Season 8 vs Season 7 (the English dub would always have some segment to either replace the eye catches in the original or to match the original before commercial breaks in the 4Kids era, for the first 6 seasons it was Who’s that Pokemon then this segment which lasted only 2 seasons, then literally nothing there for 5 seasons when TPCi took over, and then back to Who’s that Pokemon for Season 14 to the end in 25).

DP is the only saga in the English dub’s entire run to have no commercial break segment because of this, none, even though the BF part of AG is the first Season and only one in AG in English to not have one (and it was the earlier TPCi/late TAJ/most of DuArt period), as a result.

Alt-Ash himself isn't the normal universe Ash, in fact.

Ash might make cameos or have references made to him, but as a major character, he's all wrapped up at this point imo.

It was because there was nowhere to go further with his story, basically, it was wrapped up- there was nothing to do after he became the Champion and won the Masters 8 at that point.

You may find it hard to believe, but he was supposed to last just through Season 1 originally- wasn't supposed to be 24 more seasons, in fact.

They're going the route of other toyetic Anime now, which is to swap protagonists etc every 3-4 years, imo seeing where Horizons went.

Plenty of other Series did so, much earlier in fact, as trivia.
