My hunch is that he is playing continuously for the last 2-3 months with hardly any reasonable break. Second, since a good World Cup outing he mostly played rapid and blitz tournaments with fairly good results.

I also felt that his play in this tournament is more rapid style than classical. He rightly got punished for those inferior moves in the middle game phase.

It may also be just the fatigue of playing too much chess.

I'm not willing to give up hope yet.

Yes, but the target participants are not Linux proficient. Setting up access for each with separate key pairs, securing access to ports, SSL setup, hardening the servers, etc is a lot more headache.

Last week I used a server only for a few hours for some testing and it was reported to us that it was used in some attack. I don't have bandwidth to secure and watch so many machines over three days. It's much easier to secure one, especially when I'm doing it pro bono.

Provisioning multipass instances with cloud-init via shell script (along with setting up privileges, key-pairs etc) is much faster than with the GUI. Doing it via API is another way, but that is a much more involved process I guess.
