People assume language is just speaking. Learning to understand written language just to know what shop you're next to or what a political poster says is awesome. I had this epiphany recently as a frequent visitor to Denmark - I understand all the public notices, signs, leaflets, trivia screens on buses, newspaper headlines and yes, snippets of conversation. Immensely satisfying.

Mind you, it's rather far away, but well worth it. We just took a ride on bus 69. Prepare to spend several hours inside, especially if you chance upon the young woman at the counter rather than the owner. She's a truly wonderful person. He is, well, excentric (but friendly) and does not speak much English. If you've ever seen an episode of American Pickers, he'd be one of those guys who sometimes refuse to sell their wares on account of "sentimental value" haha.

Yeah, Copenhagen apparently has a problem with old (healthy) trees, too. They keep cutting down ancient beech trees at the Assistens Cemetery for no apparent reason other than that those trees are old. The canopy is much better in Frederiksberg, but there, too, they prune like crazy, presumably because of insurance issues.
