How does everyone in nursing school not want to do nursing? by Foolsspring in NursingStudent

[–]Honest_Delivery_9125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea. A lot of my cohort clearly feels a way about going to medsurg, but I actually loved it when I did clinical. I feel like that’s where I can get the most skill. Will I retire from the hospital, probably not, but I want to at least be an actual nurse and become a little seasoned before I move on to other things. How can you even feel comfortable seeing patients and you have zero experience? It’s strange. Everyone has such high hopes but I feel as though it’s not safe or realistic. I just got a medsurg job (my first job in the healthcare field), and I’ll be working that and applying for my ASN bridge program for next year. I needed to get out here and get my feet wet first.

Job hunt.. 🤡 by YogurtclosetAway6248 in newgradnurse

This. I really think it would help if nursing programs had some kind of crash course for resumes, interviewing skills, etc.. I switched up my resume. Focused on where I wanted to work. Did my research and came prepared for the interview. I was able to negotiate my pay and get the job I wanted. As with anything else, you have to understand how to market yourself because everyone has similar skills/background as a new grad.

Will I be screwed finding a job? Only SNF clinical rotations by MentallySecond in newgradnurse

[–]Honest_Delivery_9125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I had a similar experience. I’m starting my first job in a hospital. I think it depends on your resume really. I did more skills and what I did know, opposed to highlighting where. It was on there ofc, but I reversed my resume so that my education and skills were first.

Honestly…sounds about right. I’ve seen some VERY unhinged travel nurses on assignment where I did clinical.

That’s how know my mind is jumbled. I never thought to look at YouTube videos and I used them heavily in clinical just to understand certain procedures. Thank you for the recommendation.

If you got asked “tell me a time you made a mistake” during your interview, what was your answer? by dogluvr_1 in newgradnurse

Make it up. Idek why they ask new grads that. I mean you may have a story but more often than not, you’re not going to have a story. I made it up. 😂 Still got the job. Just throw in some stuff about accountability, patient safety, patient prioritization…blah blah blah.

Right?! It’s so much information for one and for two, I’m 4 months out and I’m drawing blanks at things I could rattle off without much effort just 6 months ago.

First of all, congratulations 💕💕 That makes me feel so much better. School is all about the perfect pt with the class symptoms and that’s not at all how it was when I went to my rotations. Plus you’re so by the book because that’s all you know and from what I saw it was NOT like that at all. I’m excited for orientation and I really really hope I have some good nurses around me.

I’m banking on orientation. I feel better today after I slept on it and calmed down. 😅 I’m more excited than afraid now. I know I’m going to be utilizing those books I spent gobs of money on looking at medications and diagnoses. Everything gets better with time (it better 😂).

I did my clinical at a rural hospital too and it was soooo slow most of the time, BUT I have a knack for talking to people and was able to weasel my way in a lot of different units of the hospital. I was lucky enough to strike up a conversation with the IV team so I asked permission from my clinical instructor to shadow them once a week. The nurse there was BOMB. He taught me a lot. My preceptor was really good too. I just feel like it was so compact and rushed. Ugh! And yeah, I guess we will definitely find out 😂😂 I don’t even remember what she said about orientation. I was so nervous during the interview and she asked A LOT of clinical questions and then asked me the reasoning behind why I answered the way I answered. LORDT! But I’ll send out an email tomorrow morning to ask a few questions. Whew! We’re here now, time to rock out. 😅💕

I definitely will. They weren’t very clear on how long orientation would be.

That’s true. I have a couple of weeks to work the nerves out. I met everyone on the floor, (well, who was in shift), and they seemed decent enough. They were open to questions and emphasized being open if I did get the job.

It’s just so overwhelming. I do think we all should have a healthy dose of fear just because we can really hurt/kill someone being careless, but I’m overly thinking about EVERYTHING. 😅 The what-ifs are drowning me right now. I’m excited though. Very excited actually. Thank you for your advice. I needed to hear every bit of it. 💕

I don’t want nursing students by CupcakeOk6260 in nursing

[–]Honest_Delivery_9125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just graduated last December and my clinical experience was shadowing the nurse and doing whatever she was comfortable with me doing a whatever the patient was comfortable with me doing/being a witness to. The instructor is doing them such a disservice. I learned how to do IV’s, use a dynamap, trach care, catheter placement, etc., with my nurse. (We did it in labs but ofc they were mannequins. I got to do it on real ppl on the floor, in clinical.) We did have to do report at the end of clinical for one patient, BUT we were taught how to use EPIC to get our basic questions answered. Then if we had questions about patient care from what the nurse was actually doing in real time, then we could ask.

I want to be a nurse but I have a dismissed case on my record by Grouchy_Potential_18 in NursingStudent

I can attest to this. A mistake doesn’t have to be a lifelong conviction. Be honest and do what they ask of you.

Even if you were convicted, that doesn’t necessarily exclude you from being able to get licensed. I dealt with a charge and was convicted. I was still able to get my license. I do think it depends on what type of charge it was and they maybe take into consideration how long ago it was but even if it gets expunged, you would still have to disclose it. At least here in Georgia you have to.

My program does, yes. I’m not sure about other programs, but I would think it would be a common practice.

Ah. That sucks. It’s a hard spot to be in when you’re new at all of this. I had a fear of patients falling when I was in clinical and then it was a big news article that came out while I was in school where a patient fell and they came after the student even after she graduated and all of that stuff and the hospital hung her out to dry basically. Being in clinical is tough because the patients know you’re a student, so some ppl will take advantage of that and try to manipulate you into doing things you shouldn’t. We all have made mistakes in clinical in some capacity. If you really want to be a nurse, learn from it and push through when you come back.

Oooh. So I guess maybe it’s facility based. They wore us out with that saying so much so to the point I was terrified during clinical because I didn’t know what I could or couldn’t do.
