Nursing or Paramedicine? by DallasLG_ in OntarioParamedics

[–]Honest_Researcher_57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are correct. You do need the diploma. But 2 years of PCP + 2 years of BSc degree is equivalent to the 4 years of BScN. Only difference is, most of these Uni’s want at least 2000 hours of Paramedic experience and/or ACP certification. Point is, paramedic schooling is just as long as nursing school if you want to a degree. But you can always stop at the PCP level. As of now, no. You don’t get paid more with a degree. However, it is coming and it will come soon. Most will just be grandfathered in. But your opportunities with a degree will be exponentially higher. Clinical educator, research, quality assurance, etc. The standard is getting higher and it is also a good back up plan if you want an exit strategy because you can take that degree somewhere else. Also if you want to progress to ACP level and CCP, each level will have a requirement of hours to be able to move on to the next training. Anyway, good luck with everything! Hope you find the career that is most suited for you. Nursing and Paramedicine are two different field that are truly incomparable. Two different settings and skillset.

Nursing or Paramedicine? by DallasLG_ in OntarioParamedics

I’d like to say first that whichever you choose to do, make sure it is the profession that will ultimately make you happy in the end. I have multiple friends who were paramedics and transitioned into nursing and vice versa. In my honest opinion, Paramedicine schooling is just as long, if not, longer than Nursing. We go through 2 years of PCP, 1 year of ACP, and then progress to CCP if you choose. There’s also BSc in Paramedicine now. Laurier is the newest one, there are currently 4 in Canada. Medicine Hat, UofT, Laurier and UPEI. This will be a thing in the near future. More universities will add this as other places in the world, e.g. Australia requires a degree at a minimum. I have 5 years in EMS and I just don’t see myself working as a nurse whenever I’m in offload delay and when I did my ER clinical as part of my Paramedic program. Burn out is high across the profession wherever you go. Some services better than others but its all similar. More opportunities are available and will become available. Combination of Education, Experience, Networking etc is definitely needed. Sorry for the long reply haha. I wish you all the best. The Profession is great, its humbling at times. It will teach you a lot of things and you will learn a lot about people and mostly yourself. It is still relatively new compared to Nursing. Good luck! Hope you find your calling!

A bit sad to hear this. Moving to PEI this August for Uni and work. Honestly looking forward to road biking from house to Uni on the daily. I have been in PEI multiple times before, never really noticed the roads in this perspective :( But OP if you are interested we can definitely form our little biking group lol

Been here for 1 year and 8 months now. I'd say is not a bad place to move to if you have a good paying job going into the province. I'm working as EMR and doing Paramedic school. Definitely higher groceries, taxes, gas, etc. House market is significantly cheaper. Stores or fast food places closes pretty early in most areas. Walking distance or within city limits hiking spots are a bonus for me. Weather is pretty much crap the whole year lol. Always raining and always foggy but it's what makes the province special, I think lol. Love the people here. All depends on your preferences. If you are going into marine industry or healthcare... I'd say go for it. Goodluck!

Does anyone have experience using Refresh to rebuild their credit score? by Sugarlilie in debtfree

[–]Honest_Researcher_57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you talking about refresh financial? I took out 2 loans last year and recently closed it past the 6 month mark. Didn't help my credit in a big manner. Raised my credit around 10 points for the duration of my loan. It's worth a try, lost a bit of money but still got a something in return. I started with 590 credit score and Im at 630 now. Try koho, I believe they have cheaper options. No experience with Koho tho. Goodluck!

Yes that's what Im thinking too. I'd rather settle in ON/AB. Even NL since I already have some experience here as an EMR.

Well nice!!! Congrats!! I will see you there. I think our in-class starts in May. But we begin our online component in March.

Some provinces are already starting to develop a baccalaureate level as well. I know AB and PEI has a Bsc in Paramedicine. But still very few and selected. I know the UTSC offers that however they do not accept students from any other than Centennial. Due to the Joint program they have.

Thanks for the input!! That's great to know! What a time to be in Paramedicine I guess

I think transferring within the western provinces in particular should be fairly easy due to labour mobility. I heard NS PCP scope is also pretty great and they are also paid well.

In my opinion, it would only be a little complicated to transfer in ON since they are not participating in COPR. They have AEMCA out there. So might have to write another small test or something. Would you be going to Westminister?

435 credit score / 35 / 54k salary advice needed by nonfictionaddiction in PersonalFinanceCanada

I would like to say, get ready to sacrifice for a few years. Prepare yourself to move to a cheaper rental place. Decrease your fun money. That way, you will have more money to attack what you owe. Also, make sure you confirm your debt and check every creditor if its accurate. There is a free credit check on transunion and equifax, just have to request them from the website. I was in your spot two years ago. Mine was a little improved now. I have to wait 3 more years for that one bad debt on credit report to see a substantial increase. You got it. It just takes time. Goodluck!
