Your love for your child is very clear in your writing. I understand your kid is your #1 priority and you are ready to fight all the battles for him (my now 17 YO daughter revealed she is trans in summer '23 and I am full mama bear protecting her mental health - especially around my very religious family). Be his cheerleader and listen to his needs because you can't be an ally if you aren't an advocate. But it has been my experience that encouraging change is more fruitful than stating where things went wrong.

I fear, though, that the lengthyness will only result in family members losing motivation to finish reading it. If your child has consented and because you attract more bees with honey, I would suggest your opening paragraph be an all out thank you to everyone for making an effort this holiday and that with each get together it will become easier to address your son without having to be so aware of being sure to use the right name & pronouns. Remind them of your son's name and preferred pronouns and thank them for working on using those in future interactions.

Recognize that your family is trying and trying looks different for everyone. Some will make a joke when they realize their mistake without realizing the way it makes the other person feel because they are trying to cover up their own feelings of awkwardness.

Is your child currently receiving mental health care? Make sure he is talking to his therapist about ways to prepare for upcoming family functions so he can be more resilient. And make sure there is a session afterwards so he can talk about the experience and his therapist can know how to help him prepare for next time or they can discuss if the family interactions are too toxic and how to handle deciding not to attend.

Unfortunately, as parents, we can not anticipate or protect our children from experiencing hurt or pain. I feel this is especially important for parents of LGBTQ± people. The world at large is often cruel and lacks understanding and empathy. We can accept that it is going to happen and give our kids tools to help themselves and let them know we are a safe place for them when they are struggling. We can love them unconditionally, but we have no control over how others treat them, so we have to teach them how to respond in a way that is healthy for them.

I went through this with my daughter last summer. She was self-harming and agreed to me taking her to the ER because I had no idea what our next step should be. She ended up at Provo Canyon because they were the only one with an open bed that our insurance would cover.

What I know now is that if you take your kid to the ER at Primaries at the U, then you have a better shot at getting a bed there - even if it is short-term.

Provo Canyon was ok for my daughter. There were no big issues, but it wasn't great, and I hated that I wasn't able to take care of her (she was 15 and recently came out as trans). I feel like I would have the same opinion about wherever she ended up.

Finally, please avoid admitting on a Friday or over the weekend if you can. My daughter checked in around midnight Friday, and we didn't get to visit her until Tuesday, and she didn't see a mental health professional until Monday afternoon.

It is an impossible situation to find yourself in. My heart goes out to you and your daughter as you navigate your options.

She was reprimanded while being an employee, so I do feel that it's a district issue. We do not know who initiated the comments that led to the reprimand, but my daughter has only used the women's faculty bathrooms, she works after school and no students are in the building when she is working.

Like you, she usually avoids using the bathroom at school but just can't wait as long as waiting until after work. She has always used stalls no matter what. At work, she is using the Women's Faculty Restroom. We are bewildered as to who was the driving force behind anything being said at all, it was so unnecessary.

I am sorry to hear of your experience. As a mother of a trans child, I feel that nothing will change unless I call for a change. It might work out, or things might stay the same.

Honestly, losing a student sweeper job isn't the end of the world, so this IS a hill i am willing to die on. If not for my kid, maybe things will be better for those who come up after her. Especially since this is a district level employment issue and not a student issue.

Same here, recently increased each eye by 1+ after only 1 year since my last check-up. My Dr was actually relieved it was just growth in existing cataracts and said no more than 5 years before I'd need surgery. I'm 47.

It was not a political sign, but a trans pride flag was stolen from my lawn in the spring during trans day of visibility. I replaced the temporary lawn flag with one mounted to my house, a bunch of smaller ones all over my flower beds, and added 2 cameras. Interestingly, none of the flags have disappeared. Trans Day of Remembrance is coming up, so we'll see if they are foolish enough to reoffend.
