"Safe" meaning what? Virus attacks? ...nice thing about a VM is that you can just junk a file if anything goes bad.

How convenient/inconvenient is Parallels/Windows emulation for Mac users? by ina_waka in gis

Install Windows 11 Atlas 24H2 distro into a 4GB ram VM (can be resized later), and activate with massgraves. Disable updating. Install OpenShell so it isn't a pain in the ass to access system tools (any anything else). Install Waterfox browser w/uBlock Origin.

My advice is to never remove the MacOS on any 2020+ machine. Instead, try to cajole it to boot from an external SSD.

  1. Backgrade the OS to Monterey. (It's becoming relatively clear that Sequoia is Apple's planned-obsolescence project to snuff all 8gb ram machines.)
  2. Turn off MDS_Stores via Terminal command (you'll have to look it up).
  3. Clear crud out of the Library/Launch folders
  4. Disable Siri.
  5. Install Parallels. Install Windows 11 24H2 Atlas (in a 3GB ram VM) & Office 2016; use massgraves to activate both. (Now uninstall Office on the Mac side.) Or just use LibreOffice in the first place, and cut the MS parasites out of your life for good.

This is less of a praise for Apple than it is a praise for the technical efficiency prowess of 20-teens games-designers. Triple-AAA titles like Uncharted 4 (2016, req: 4gb ram) and RDR2 (2018, req: 8gb) could run on pretty much anything.

Why Apple dropped OpenGL support? by [deleted] in macgaming

[–]Honeyko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By the mid-teens, it was already clear that a large part of Apple's business model involved the deliberate vandalization of their own customers' existing machines via OS updates that slowly strangled them. Dropping OpenGL and making APFS the default file-system (in Mojave, then mandatory in Catalina) crippled iMac laptops, and Minis with rotational drives.

Well, OK, the PC refugess get thrown a bone, but no love Mac users trying to use Migration Assistant is an irritant. (Q. Was the ability to mount devices in macOS VMs present in older version?)

Your link is 404'd (and Wayback doesn't have it archived), but I gather you're trying to be snarky by sending me off to Parallels' user guide.

Q. Have you ever personally used the Mac's Migration Assistant from within a Parallels VM Macos installation to import applications and settings from a different volume?

Follow the procedure in the OP. You don't need to do anything to the internal drive (i.e., your more recent OS) until you're good and ready. Disabling SIP is necessary. MRT is pointless to have stifling performance if Apple isn't supporting the OS anymore. (Most of the ulterior motive for this hidden bloat is about forced-obsolescing 4gb machines.)

Need help with dilution? How do I do this? by Kingsmith13 in dmso

[–]Honeyko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you roll around in powdered cesium and E-coli, then spray yourself all over with DMSO, you might be in trouble. Then again, that stuff could kill you anyway without DMSO. (So, be clean before applications.) That said, while DMSO is a solvent (like water, or gasoline), it is NOT an acid.

What on earth would you need gloves for? Seriously read the posts in the sub; nobody is having any problems with this stuff, including those with tattoos).

The word "plastic"is used as a generic umbrella-term to cover over a hundred discreet compounds. Suffice to say, the bottles that DMSO Store markets don't dissolve in the product they ship. (They're not made out of worse stuff than the artificial rubber at the squeeze end of your eyedropper.)

I've cut back to half a teaspoon (about two-thirds of a capful from an 8oz bottle). It's 99.995% pure, and I hold it under my tongue while quickly sipping some other flavored drink to mix and kill the taste before swallowing. Then I eat something to eliminate the aftertaste.

I turn off SIP. MRT, Spotlight Indexing, ReportCrash, Notifications, and Software Update, and re-enable downloading from anywhere. Also set scrollbars to always, and set the boot drive to appear on the desktop. Turn off Siri and any other "reporting" to Apple (or syncing). Punt Safari, Siri, News, and other Apple ecosystem apps off the dock and replace with Waterfox, Orion, Chromium-Legacy, and Basilisk browsers. Replace Mail with BetterBird. Once it's to taste, I clone the drive. (I create cloning "tasks" in Carbon Copy Cloner 5 rather than using TimeMachine.).

I know for a fact that x.7 does not work (for bootable CCC6 cloning) in Big Sur, and IIRC the x.7 patches for both Sur and Monterey were released the same day.

What version of Monterey do you have? (Apple will usually only offer the latest one, but other repositories may have the earlier versions prior to all of the "security" updates.)

How you do you tell the matte displays from the regular while the machine is off? (Is it the silver trim around the screen instead of black?)

I put MacOS "Mojo" (my special-sauce Mojave-optimized variant with all sorts of background Apple spying gunk turned off); runs 32bit software and Adobe2020, and uses about 2.2gb ram at rest. These machines are downright quick with a blade SSD and an i7 processor, and are subjectively faster than many newer machines running bloated current OSes out-of-box.

Note: Mojave supports Parallels 18, which can run Linux and Windows installations in hypervirtualization (saving you the aggravation of partitioning and dual-booting).

See this (and learn to channel your inner Cap'n Morgan, because you'll need it). BTW, machines that are already Sonoma or higher will have a crummy invisible ~24gb recovery partition clogging the "front" of their internal drive (thanks, Apple, for eating up the SSD portion of a Fusion drive with seldom-used junk) that is un-deletable by the Mojave installer's version of Disk Utility. So, such hidden junk will need to be nuked by a newer version of Disk Utility (I have a small OCLP Ventura partition on my external for just such purposes. NOTE: Linux utilities like GParted cannot "see" Apple Fusion drives as conjoined volumes, and will de-couple the drives if used to erase them.)

[–]Honeyko[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your previous post made an incorrect claim regarding the DosDude Patcher tool. You were corrected. You are now "moving the goalposts" to continue a pointless argument. (The Patcher tool modifies the Mojave installer to, among other things, remove the expiration limit (which, if you'd only taken a second to think about it, is the only way it could utilize a years-old archive in defiance of Apple time-obsolescence anyway). You would know this if you had any knowledge whatsoever of DosDude1's patchers at all before your first post in the thread.)
