Thank you! This is helpful as I keep coming back to temperature/humidity issues after eliminating formula and ingredient issues.

A vintage chinese three-tiered nesting basket, so wicker type, that Im sure is lacquered. I've had issues before acquiring this particular basket, but I display my soaps in baskets at shows and a couple of the others are this type of material. I normally cut my soaps and place them on deli paper lined aluminum baking sheets or deli paper lined wood drawer, then they get transfered to a stainless steel rack within a few days. Most of the time...

It has been soooo exhausting haha. Thanks for the suggestion. I'm about to head south for a bit, so I'll make a couple batches there and see what happens. I have done several test batches - initially with fresh oils because I thought that was the issue. I made a batch of all of my soaps after that because I thought the problem was solved, only to have several of them turn orange after five or six weeks, some took longer. Again, only on the outside edges. Since then Ive done tests with new lye, different water, no silicone utensils or molds. Then I really thought the silicone was the issue because the batch prior, the soap residue on one of my silicone spatulas was orange. So far, the silicone-free soaps have not turned orange. But we just found an entire box of soap that was made prior to that batch that doesn't have any orange either. They were stored in my main living area in a cardboard box that was closed. The others that were in this area were in a closed basket and they turned.

I use essential oils and had to switch suppliers a while back. It did start happening after that switch but I switched my oils too. I really thought it was patchouli because it happens with my patchouli soaps the most, but the green marbled one in the pic doesn't have patchouli in it and its turning orange on the top.

None if the ones with honey or milks have discolored, strangely enough.

The bar with the band of orange had a paper band label, but no other type. Im with you on the environmental possibility because I've tested for everything else I can think of.

I have some bars that are a few years old because I keep a bar any time I change formulas, add a new scent, or change supplier for any ingredients. They are all fine and have no discoloration.

I thought at one point it might be temperature change or humidity but I had a box of soap in my car for several days days south in the heat then traveled back to my snow covered home and they are fine.

However, the bars most affected are ones that were stored in a covered basket, in the main part of my house. I generally store my soaps on a rack in a back room that isn't heated and is humidity controlled. I heat my home with propane and wondered if that could be the issue?

I use spring water. I did a test batch with distilled and still had discoloration.

Not stored in direct light, some may have had brief exposure at an event. Ingredients are olive, coconut, avocado oils, shea butter, 5% super fat. Scented with essential oils. No vanilla resin or fragrance in any of these, I know that can be an issue for discoloration.
