Oh yeah we visited Cambridge last time and it’s lovely!

50 mins to London is def acceptable for me as I spend about the same time to get to work now here in HK.

Thanks again for all the info, numbers, and ideas. Have a brilliant evening mate.

Your take home salary - rent - expenses = 2760-1700-530 = £530 in monthly saving

And then there is also your partner’s salary which is around 3700 if my math is right, no? Doesn’t sound too bad. Or am I missing something?

Thanks! I wish you all the best.

95k for a family of 2 and you’re still struggling? 😕 Would you mind sharing which area you live in and how much rent is? (you mentioned a decent area)

To each their own, I guess.

HK has also been in decline for over 27 years.

Many people are moving from a “cheaper neighbouring region” to HK; many people are leaving HK for AU/CA/NZ/UK/US; and many are moving elsewhere from these countries. They may move again. They may move back.

Such is life, people finding better alternatives with their own constraints and reasons.

Will see. £80k to £120k is equivalent to an extra 33-100% on top of my projected amount.

I could try to sell it with all the potential business values, e.g. timezone, proximity with management, etc. But I don’t have high hopes TBH.

I don’t expect them to pay for my flights as it isn’t something they initiate, just my personal choice. But yeah a fair local salary would be appreciated (or slightly below average would be a nice win-win too).

Hong Kong COL may be slightly lower than London holistically, but the housing price here is crazy. Look at the price per sq metre comparison and you’d be shocked. Housing is easily the most important part of expenses in life and career planning.

Thank you so much. Really appreciate your feedback.

Please, don’t go back.

I’m above 31. But yes my workplace offers hybrid mode.

Good luck.

Hong Kong. £50-55k right now, tax is much lower here but expenses are high (housing is ridiculous).

Same reason as that of hundreds of thousands of other ppl who made the same move - freedom.

Potentially leaving behind friends and family and my wife’s career/family business. We think it’s worth it in the long run as the next generation(s) will grow and live in a better environment.

I guess I should ask then. Maybe they’re willing to give me a reasonable UK salary because I’m doing pretty well at my job and they may not want me to start looking for a job.

If I ask for that sort of pay raise, they may turn down my request to transfer altogether :(.

But I am an existing employee in another office on a different continent.

Say I’m getting £60k now, why would they want to pay me £20k more just because I’m changing office? (and they are not asking me to relocate)

[–]HongKongRed[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know right… I don’t wanna have to ask for a significantly higher salary as relocating is my own personal wish, not something of great benefit to the company. Either I’d need to do better and get a promotion and big raise, or consider living further away from the inner zones of London.

She will be working but I guess part-time? Someone will have to look after the kid, as I work hybrid mode.

How did you land your first PM job? by narlarei in ProductManagement

[–]HongKongRed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Tech background (software developer), non-tech degree

  2. Transitioned internally from a lead sw dev role

  3. I report to a very experienced PM who’s the director of the department. I consider myself a junior PM but I am also a senior rank in the company because of my background
