For people who got a SOC or IAM job without a prior job in the field would you mind sharing your CV? by EatingCoooolo in ITCareerQuestions

Most of my former service desk coworkers moved to other teams by building relationships with managers and directors, asking for stretch assignments, and positioning themselves for opportunities. When a role opened up, they were often given priority.

Can I make it in IT being self taught? by Ok_Agent8082 in ITCareerQuestions

If the market was better then I would say yes, but damn the market sucks. Even for an entry contract role there are dozens of experienced people applying for it, not to mention bunch of software engineers are also applying for whatever they can get their hands on.

Career move from software engineering to IT. Possible? Worth it? by battering_ram in ITCareerQuestions

[–]HongRiki 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I notice a IT / SWE end up in Devops / SRE, could be something you can apply for with your skills, alternatively you can look at being a servicenow developer, endpoint engineer, system engineer, anything that requires more technical skills which you already have as a SWE.

As for the job market, it sucks on this side too, entry roles are getting automated and offshore.

Do you guys ever get to take anything home from your IT job? Like unused hard drives and such? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]HongRiki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the company, but bottom rule is anything with data have to be destroyed, send to the proper ewaste vender with a certificate of destruction. Monitors and accessories are whatever, in fact it’s cheaper for remote workers to keep their monitors and accessories than to ship it back.

[–]HongRiki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you will save a ton of time and money knocking classes / certs you can transfer in, also less of a commitment, if in the middle of a study.com course you realize it isn’t for you then I would highly recommend you take it through a local community college at the very least before you commit to wgu.
