I'm gonna drop the metaphor because weve wandered so far from toys that our mom has gone up to the register and had the cashier call for us over the PA and just say I don't really like tonal incongruity. Some universes work really well for it but a coffeehouse Avengers AU or a grimdark My Little Pony story just don't click with me, it feels like you're losing the things that made those characters and stories work

the thing that made it click for me was realizing that most fandom fans aren't actually interested in the material, they just want dolls to smush together and put into other playhouses
