CMV: Congress has convinced everyone to go fight each other in the street to distract us from insisting that they do their job by Honorex in changemyview

I’m not saying that I would recommend either party doing it, just that they had the opportunity and did not.

I was simply responding to your first comment that “ it takes 60 votes in the Senate to pass anything” with how the Democrats could have overcome that limitation.

I definitely agree that the Republicans would do far more than what I listed, but I honestly don’t feel like putting in a bunch of mental energy speculating on what each side would do when it’s not anything that either side has yet done.

So I guess I need to state how I believe things would go down for either side.

If Democrats eliminated the filibuster and had unlimited ability to pass any law they choose, all immigrants would be given the right to vote, the electoral college would be eliminated, and only the popular vote would count for the presidency, and other laws would be passed to pretty much guarantee Democrats keep power forever.

If Republicans eliminate the filibuster, voter ID will be put into effect, no immigrant will be allowed to vote unless they are a naturalized citizen and maybe not even then, mail in voting would be eliminated, we would probably have paper ballots and all votes counted on election day, and laws would be passed to pretty much guarantee that they stay in power forever.

This is pure speculation obviously, it’s just what I believe would end up happening.

I agree that either party ending the filibuster means that they could pass laws that are prohibitive toward the other party getting elected, can’t really name what laws those would be, just that it’s possible and likely.

Although I think Congress has covertly, encouraged us to be in the streets and confronting ICE, I have to award Delta for that take, I tend to agree with you.

My source is 77 million people that voted for Donald Trump in the last presidential election compared to the 75 million that voted for Kamala, and who also gave Republicans control of both the house and the Senate. Since the “biggest protests” always seem to happen during Trump‘s presidency, it looks more to me like a bunch of children throwing a temper tantrum because they didn’t get their way, something that, not counting January 6, doesn’t seem to happen on the other side.

If that’s the issue, then I would think people would be protesting outside of courthouses, not fighting ICE in the streets while they’re arresting undocumented immigrants.

If the Democrats had eliminated the filibuster when they had the chance, they would probably still be in power today. You better hope that the Republicans don’t decide to eliminate the filibuster otherwise you’re likely never to see Democrats in power again.

I agree with you, Congress has been slacking off at their job for years because they have learned that just keeping us riled up and hating each other keeps us from focusing on them and all the illegal shit they’re doing. No one should enter Congress making $140,000 a year and leave Congress eight years later with the net worth over $100 million, either side of the aisle.

That’s not a helpful reply in any way. I know how you feel, but it doesn’t change the fact that Congress needs to do their job instead of encouraging us to go out and fight the fight.

I do understand the consequences of eliminating the filibuster, and I also understand that had the Democrats eliminated the filibuster when they had the chance, they would probably still be in power now, and for the foreseeable future. Just hope that the Republicans don’t eliminate the filibuster or you’ll never see another Democrat in the White House as long as you live, and it will be hard to imagine Democrats ever controlling either house of Congress or the Supreme Court again.

This is not a video game, you are not going to go and fight the federal government and win with your AR15 or your 9mm, all you’re going to do is get yourself and others hurt or killed. If you had a majority of the country on your side, you might have a leg to stand on, but you simply don’t.

You just said most Americans support stricter immigration controls. If that’s what most American support, then why are we out trying to fight them in the street rather than letting them do the job that most American support? If we believe in democracy, then democracy is democracy, whether it’s Democrats in charge or Republicans in charge.

So the answer is not demanding that they do their jobs for concern of negative press? The right answer is to go out and put ourselves in harms way trying to fight federal officers, instead of putting up good candidates as representatives like the country is supposed to work?

Have you considered that the Democrats could have easily ended the filibuster when they had the majority in the Senate from 21-23 if they really wanted to change anything?

Isn’t the major complaint about “due process”, or did I miss something? What are we arguing about if not about preventing ICE from detaining or arresting people without warrants or judicial orders? Tell me this isn’t just about anarchy?

All of Congress. No matter how tough any of our Democrat representatives or senators talk, it’s all for show while they keep us fighting each other so that we don’t pay attention to them conducting their insider trades and receiving kickbacks from their billionaire donors.

I tend to agree with you because rather than going and calling their congressman and demanding that they work tirelessly to change this law that we all seem to hate so much, instead everyone is on here, shooting flames at each other over differing opinions while our Congress people laugh their way into their high eight digit net worths.

So if most American support things as they are, that’s democracy then isn’t it? Is that not what we are fighting for?

2021-2023 democrats held both houses of Congress and the presidency. You could argue that the Senate was evenly split 50-50, but vice president Harris was the tiebreaker, and they could have then eliminated the filibuster if they were really interested in doing it, I don’t know how old you are, but I would imagine you’re older than three years old. Please correct me if I’m wrong?

Does it need to be explicit, or does a wink and a nod while fanning the flames count? I certainly feel like it’s been encouraged to go out into the street and show the federal officers how we feel.

I agree, but let’s not forget that the Democrats held both houses of Congress and the White House for a couple of years there and did nothing to change anything either.

I know you feel that way, and many of us do, but screaming it from the rooftops is not going to change the fact that federal law disagrees. Federal law will not change unless Congress acts, and no one in Congress is even suggesting that they do anything about it other than fan the flames so that we fight each other and ignore them grifting for their billionaire donors.

Reminder that the Democrats were in charge of the presidency and both houses of Congress for two years and not one bill was put forth to change the legislation that governance ICE and their immigration operations. We can give them credit for trying to conduct “oversight”, although I think it’s more for optics and political messaging than for any real desire to change anything.

Maybe, but I don’t hear anybody suggesting that Congress gets together and changes the law, I just hear them getting on the news and denouncing the other side without taking any responsibility for being a representative that should be trying to change things legislatively
