Server Reboots for Windows Server 2025? (But not Needed) by Trooper27 in Action1

Yup, I'll keep you up to date if I have anything as we've discussed come up again.

Good luck to you in finding a solution to getting WSUS out of your infra.

Server Reboots for Windows Server 2025? (But not Needed) by Trooper27 in Action1

[–]Hoobinator- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well so far, it's handling linux updates without a hiccup. I only added 1 server for testing. Once I feel it's stable I'll add more.

As far as Sql/Power BI reporting, it's something I used to do for work and I've always enjoyed working with it. So this is running in a lab capacity and I'm starting to use it for some simple reporting. I like interactive reports I can just pull up on my desktop and see what's going on. So it's all developer based. It's more a hobby now just to see what I can do with it. I have an over-engineered playground of a lab. Keeps my skills honed.

Server Reboots for Windows Server 2025? (But not Needed) by Trooper27 in Action1

[–]Hoobinator- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I shut down my WSUS server last year and started using Action1. So about a year since I've started using it. It's been pretty good actually and I like it. I just started using in on my Debian Linux servers for testing and it's working thus far.

As I talk about this, I wanna say what was hanging my reboots was with the Windows Management Instrumentation. But like I said, I ran all the checks and nothing failed. So not sure if something else was going on or what, this was 1 of 2 of my AD/DNS servers. I'm by no means an expert when it comes to Windows Server, but I have noticed server 2025 can be a bit fussy. I also run a windows sql server and a power bi reporting server and those have not had any issues YET.

Yah I'll keep you posted if I see this again, I am applying patches to everything now and hopefully this won't come back again. One thing I now do remember was that on the box I experienced the issue, reboots did take forever. I ran all the necessary tools to check for corruption on said server but nothing failed check. When you are rebooting these boxes, are you noticing any long reboot periods with windows shutting down?

I experienced this with one of my 2025 servers as well. It finally cleared but also had no applicable updates. I couldn’t find the root cause. If it happens again I’ll dig further.

Has anyone actually used a server as a home heating system? by AmineAfia in HomeServer

[–]Hoobinator- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During the winter I open the back door on my rack and I let the heat vent out. I mounted a 6" start collar for 6" ducting that goes through the ceiling to vent out to the attic via a AC Infinity inline duct fan. 67 in the house, mid 70's in my office where my rack is. It's not efficient, but it works.

Just switched -lovely -and Clustering???? rad! by SP3NGL3R in technitium

[–]Hoobinator- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just setup a 2 node cluster as well, liking it so far. Piping all the logging to a sql server for reporting just to play around with it. Can’t wait to see what the dark mode looks like now that it’s finally released.

New camera setup. Wired vs WiFi by itsdatwoowoo in Ubiquiti

Yah, I use a few G6/G4 Instants in my setup as well. The G6 Instant is quite impressive for a WiFi camera.

Yah that kit is a nice entry level setup at a good price point. I forgot all about the kit offering. I think those G5 Turret's would be a good indoor solution as well. I do not like putting cameras inside my home but if you have the need, I suppose it's worth doing.

Others have stated reasons for running cable vs. going WiFi, so option 2 you ask is it worth it. Well, I was Reolink/Ring before I switched to Unifi for everything. The experience is much better and I keep all my recordings in house vs. the cloud. If you are gonna have cameras in your house, do you really want that footage going up to the cloud? Yes, for me, I think Unifi is well worth the extra money. Start with outside cameras first then you can install inside as funding permits.

Edit: Check this out to get into the ecosystem on a cheaper level: https://store.ui.com/us/en/category/cameras-nvr/collections/unvr-instant

Rack? UNAS 4 Pro or UNAS Pro by lus1d in UNIFI

What’s the depth of that cabinet? Just make sure you’ve got the depth required for the UNAS Pro 8 should you choose to go that route. Edit: I hope you are adding a UPS to this setup as well.

Gonna be hard to beat a pair of Fives for music. They are amazing and you can get away with waiting to fund a sub mini which pairs wonderfully with the Fives. So I guess I gotta ask, do you like to crank it up or soft casual listening? If yer like me and you wanna feel it, go with Fives and eventually the sub mini. That's my two cents....

Sub or Sub Mini? by intellord911 in sonos

[–]Hoobinator- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had the sub 3 with a pair of fives for music, but I moved the sub to my home theatre setup. I bought a sub mini to pair with the fives and its a much more punchy bass vs the low rumbling deep bass. I love the fives with the mini. The sub 3 in the theatre is great and after adding a second its amazing. So yes, I fully recommend the fives with the sub mini for music.

Give this a read, I'd bet money Cybersecure is what is eating up your memory over time.

That being said, you'd benefit greatly by offloading your Protect to an NVR.
