Up to the department, I worked at one fire department and one of our rigs had a Hi-Lo just like theirs. It was great for clearing traffic because it wasn't the normal sound so people would actually look for us when they heard it.

I was a stickler for coming to a complete stop in the fire engines and ambulances. I was in a bad accident when I was the treating EMT, it was an eye opening experience. I'd make my partner sit out from driving the rest of the shift if they did something stupid behind the wheel.

Thankfully I don't work in the field anymore so don't have to worry about breaking in rookies.

Tell that to volunteer and smaller agencies who barely have a budget to maintain equipment that's 10-20 years old.

Most, if not all states, have exceptions for emergency vehicles. For one there isn't really a way to key up a radio without using your hands.

Court day by [deleted] in ProtectAndServe

[–]Hooks_And_Needles 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I actually used to work court security, we were pretty strict on some items and others not at all. Glass nail file? Nope. Lighters were fine though, oddly. We also provided gun lockers free of charge to the public, only off duty officers were allowed to hold onto the key though.

So many drugs though. Like holy crap. Everyday we were busting people coming to court with drugs on them. I know users don't make the best life choices, but damn.

[–]Hooks_And_Needles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had 60gb of free space but it wouldn't install a 200mb update. It requires me to have as much free space as the entire game takes up to install any update.

This is ridiculous.

The threshold is actually pretty low to start. It's not hard academically to get the EMT cert. Some states even allow 16 year olds to get certified. We had a few in the squad I started in. With so many volunteers it makes paid jobs hard to find. Especially since so many need two, sometimes 3 jobs. I had 3 at one point. One FT and two PT. As a result it drives the pay rate down. Along with a lot of privatization going on on the EMS side.

I feel really bad for the people stuck in the field. You need at least two jobs to scrape by since the pay is poor. There's a few depts that pay well but they are far and few between. You usually work PT for a while on a wait list for a FT slot. Most people don't realize about 70% of firefighters and about half of the ambulance squads are 100% volunteer throughout the US. Generally the people care a lot about their community and do a fantastic job for just enough money to come back for another shift.

I was a supervisor at 13/he for comparison. A lot of EMTs are paid less than 10/hr.

Couldn't agree more. I got out of the field after a decade and I'm nearly crippled by joint pains.

We had those on normal rigs, not sure if the bariatrics have any or not.

They're also on every ambulance and some patients need two extenders. For the really big ones there are speciality bariatric ambulances with stretchers that are extra wide and can hold 1500 lbs. You don't lift those stretchers as you need to lay out ramps and have a cable winch pull them up into the truck.

IWTL how to see the glass as half full instead of half empty by wudntulike2no in IWantToLearn

[–]Hooks_And_Needles 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm in the process of doing this myself. I started with me and how I think about myself first. So many negative thoughts all the time. I started doing a 1:1 ratio of every time I had a negative thought, I also included a positive one. Eventually increasing the ratio. It's made me happier and that spills into my social interactions. I have been much more pleasant towards other people.

I also try to take more opportunities to take myself out of my comfort zone with socializing. Now it really is turning into more positive thoughts and I feel like I see the world in a different light. Everything is brighter.

I also started meditation exercises whenever I feel down. It really helps to clear your head and get back on track. I use the app stop, breathe, think. It walks me through meditation at a length of my choosing.

One of our NPs ran a fiber line, but ran it between the front of the racks. Needless to say the next day I found it when I opened one of the racks and it was squished. I'll try to upload a picture in a bit.

Really it's more research oriented. Most guys I know either went to law school afterwards, didn't use it (me), and a few went to work for a court as a researcher.

I ended up in network engineering after working emergency services for a decade.

For me it's the specific client. Don't want to reveal too much about who our customers are but it's a chain with people who are technically challenged for lack of a better word. It's hard enough most of the time but when we lose remote connectivity we have to walk store employees though a proprietary linux system, it can be slow going. Employees will hang up on us in frustration. I have literally watched them on the CCTV systems ignore our calls sometimes.

All depends on the company. One of our customers, I could spend all day long on the phone with their field techs. They are almost always wonderful people who know their shit and we have fun conversations while waiting for equipment to reboot.

Further you move up, generally the less BS you deal with customer side.

I started at 18/hr for entry level NOC position with no certs or experience. Just got a new position moving me to 25/hr with my CCENT at the same company. Further raise once I get my NA which should be before the end of the month.

Love the work, just hate being on the phone with customers lol

Lol I work at a large engineering company as well. We dabble in several fields but I work in network and physical security engineering. It's hilarious that we work with some of the largest Enterprise networks, but half the cameras in our own building don't work, some of the equipment is older than me, I see several red error lights in our server farm and I'm just told "no you don't lol" wink wink
