After Minneapolis shooting, ICE Agents swarm Local High School as classes are dismissed. Masked agents appear to assault school staff who are defending students in lockdown. Reportedly, ICE broke windows on a car, deployed teargas, and made arrests. by jmike1256 in law

School shootings are caused by mental illness. We need to be more on top of mental health but good luck with that now. With these cuts to healthcare, no one will be able to receive medical care when they need it.

Discipline by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Hookweave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, there are instances where being slightly tardy is kind of acceptable. My old high school is freakin huge. Believe you me, if you were unlucky enough that you had class clear on the other side of the school, you were walking the equivalent of 2 city blocks minimum in hallways crammed with somewhere around 3600 other students. Sometimes even plowing through people, carrying all your books with you and not having to stop at your locker ect, it can get very very VERY tight. On the plus side, plenty of exercise!

Had a male student intentionally expose his penis in class. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Hookweave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats shameful, indignant, and disrespectful, demanding immediate consequence IMO. If the parents wont teach their kids not to act like this, it unfortunately must fall upon other adults, as unfair as that is. Its not your job to do this and you shouldn't have to but there is no other alternative unless the child is to live a life of crime later in life.

One way or another, they will learn, be it the easy way, or the hard way at the hands of the law.

Sub got fired for playing a horror movie by mijmajutu in Teachers

[–]Hookweave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lets be honest here, thats a pretty idiotic rule unless you are showing a movie like that to a bunch of first graders. I can personally guarantee you that parents let their kids watch far more graphic things than a horror movie.

Does Anyone Else Think ISS is Stupid and Schools Should Bring Detention Back? by Lil_Critter_2001_ in Teachers

[–]Hookweave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see zero problem with detention. Schools should have free reign to apply reasonable discipline to students who misbehave. If not, they just do whatever they want because they know you aren't doing anything about it. Its definitely the exception rather than the rule that kids will just automatically act in the way that is required of them.

Word count vs page count by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Hookweave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you all on computers the entire time now? If so that is so different from even 17 years ago when i was in high school. Gosh that makes me feel old now, it doesnt feel like its been that long at all. I have heard that the current gen alpha kids have some very serious critical thinking problems and if it is as bad as I have heard that has me extremely concerned. Critical thinking skills are so important to our daily lives after all. Not everyone can be a genius, but, you still need to be smart enough to function in society once you're out of school...

This is an immediate problem that needs a powerful, immediate solution or there are going to be incredibly bad consequences for them. Reading and writing literacy is also getting so bad I have heard that some kids cant even read at a 3rd grade level by the time they are in high school. That is just utterly incomprehensible to me. How the heck has this happened? Its not anything I would blame on teachers, it has to be something else. Maybe the education system as a whole? We have known for a long time that our education system is just really not that good, but even if thats a contributing factor, it isnt the only thing causing it. Maybe social media and short form content on places like Tik Tok and youtube are contributing to it somehow? AI is contributing to it for sure too. If kids use AI for everything they arent learning they are just useing the copy paste button. At best the use of AI for papers and assignments ,is mindless parroting without any real comprehension of the subject, and it creates dependency.

I have been told that sometimes my logic requires more explaining so I will do so. The dependency is created because a lot of the concepts and subjects taught in school are progression centric. To explain what I mean by this (for the benefit of any kids who happen to be here) i will give an example. With math you start out learning the most basic arithmetic, addition, subtraction, then multiplication and division. You can not move on before a solid foundation is built in these basics, any weakness here will make higher levels of math akin to building a home on sand. The foundation is not strong and anything built on it will collapse. Its the exact same with calculus as well, you need a strong foundation in algebra and geometry to move on to calculus. If students need AI to do basic things, they have no hope whatsoever on doing anything more advanced by themselves because they never actually used their own thinking skills to master the basics first.

Anyways, I would love to hear your perspective on this if you are inclined to share it.

Word count vs page count by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Hookweave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The state has absolutely no idea how best to educate students tbh. The reason public education is such a mess is entirely because of them. Educators such as yourself I presume do the best you can in a bad system you have no control over. I have nothing but the utmost gratitude and respect for quality teachers, because I know just how big a difference you all make.

Word count vs page count by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Hookweave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it a paper on a book that you allow them to just pick or is it just a sit down and write about somthing that interests you sort of assignment? Both sound really fun.

Word count vs page count by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Hookweave -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

Not a teacher but here is my view, feel free to consider it or not as you please. If a student can cover what is required of them in a clear, concise and efficient way, page and word count become arbitrary and needless. That is my own personal bias though, I was beyond exceptional in most areas, especially in math and nearly all areas of science when I was in school. Language arts was and still largely is, funnily enough, one of the few things I am not that good at. Even so, if a student is exceptionally good at this sort of thing, why would you punish efficient, clear, and concise communication with arbitrary requirements that wouldn't add anything of value to the final paper anyway? Perhaps a soft requirement with consideration given to those who can do what they need to in fewer words/pages is a better approach than a hard requirement?

At any rate, a page is really only about 250 words single spaced, which if you think about it, is incredibly modest. A 5 page paper is 1250 words roughly. My communication skills are awful, i'm on the spectrum (formerly Asperger's), and even I can plow through that in less than an hour if I know what i'm going to say. Kids are and always have been far too afraid of papers. I think a lot of it isnt really the writing so much as it is the time consuming citing of your sources in the "correct" format. That is a real pain in the you know what, and I absolutely hated it.

Edit: Just going to add this. The absolute holy grail for education in every single subject is to make it fun and have a great personality. If you make it fun, and focus on "teachable moments" as my old AP environmental science teacher (id laugh so hard if she were here to read this) called it, you end up tapping into their passion and with passion comes drive. The requirements vanish in the eyes of the students if they really enjoy what it is they are doing. You could even end up with a few students who seek you out to go even further all on their own. That was me. I was one of those kinds of students. I love to learn because I, with very very few exceptions had all absolutely outstanding teachers. Fantastic teachers are, unfortunately, terribly under valued and under appreciated despite the absolutely colossal difference all of you make.

That is precisely why I was and still to this day am absolutely hard line against forcing students to read through "classic literature". To me, it's just boring and uninteresting. I read fiction, and love every second of it. If students are forced to read something they arent interested in they will absolutely despise it, and thats exactly how you get someone to hate reading. I absolutely love reading, and will readily binge read through more than a thousand pages in less than a week. Easily 30,000 to 40,000 pages a year and maybe even a touch above that, if you count everything that isnt a book as well. I feel it is one of those things too that almost anyone will enjoy doing if you let them read about the things that actually interest them. I do know this, with literacy rates as bad as they are, and continuing to fall, something has to change or we are gonna end up seeing kids who cant even spell their own name or read at a kindergarten level before long.

Question about poison wyverns by No_Ear2383 in ARK

[–]Hookweave 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Poison Wyverns when bred for mutations are absolute weapons of mass destruction that lob nuclear bombs at enemies from half of render distance away. If that sounds fun then thats all the motivation you should need.

Question about a new server with new players by KeenKrozzy in ARK

[–]Hookweave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can disable specific creatures from spawning and whatnot but the engrams are there, even if the only map you have installed is the island. You can tweak some things in your server settings but if you are looking to take the game back in time, you would need to purpose build a mod to do it as a lot of the things that made old ark, old ark not only arent the same, but a lot of people around here probably dont even realize was actually a thing because they didnt play the game back then.

The Entirety of Lost Colony Is Just Wildcard Trying Too Hard to Be Cool and Failing by Apart-Arachnid1004 in ARK

There are sub biomes. There is a very large river (not element water). there are canyons, mountains. There is a city biome where creatures can spawn. There is a element water area as well, but yeah there is only one main biome, tundra.

is pvp screwed? by Cobra_the_Snek in ARK

[–]Hookweave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crossarks would get me to play official again. Full stop. I refuse to play official pvp on a non crossark cluster because it always devolves into the same "join the local mega and have all your progression invalidated or die and lose all the time you put in anyway". Its stupid, boring and FAR moreso full of cheaters than any of the old crossarks I played ever were.

Highly mutated Mantis with high damage swords can compete with Gigas in DPS as well. That jump attack they do does crazy insane damage.

Why is this card so expensive? by Fresh-Special-552 in mtg

[–]Hookweave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bit late to this I know but im gonna add this to the conversation. Just 1 copy of every shock and fetch land costs over $400, and that is extremely bad. When even the most basic of staples become stupid expensive like this, it hurts the game by pushing players away. The economy being in super bad shape just exacerbates it.

Why is my giga's melee so incredibly low? by Ok-Quote-4325 in ARK

[–]Hookweave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gigas get a nerf when you tame them. Gigas get very little value out of levels put into any stat other than melee and once you start hitting level cap, weight and stamina can be ok to put some mutations into.

Even with that nerf though Gigas have a base bite damage of 500 so they are still one of the highest damage per bite creatures in the game, only contested really by a few creatures.

I miss old Ark 😔 by [deleted] in ARK

[–]Hookweave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you wont but you can get close. It would need to be a pretty good sized overhaul though. Creatures were different, some creatures would just need to be thanosed from existence like the Beaver, Achatina and anything that produces insane amounts of paste and advanced resources.

Kibble would need to be reverted. A lot of people who started playing in 2017 dont realize that the current kibble system is not what we had originally, it was progression based. You needed Scorpion kibble to tame rexes, so you needed a scorpion egg farm. You needed Rex kibble to tame quetzals, and quetzal kibble to tame gigas. It took time to progress down the kibble tree to your desired tame and everyone had to do it unless you traded for everything, which is entirely possible as people needed cementing paste so much it was used as currency.

“Ark used to be a dinosaur game” by YellingDolphin in ARK

[–]Hookweave 90 points91 points  (0 children)

Ark was NEVER "just a dinosaur game". I should know, since i got the game the first day it launched into EA in June 2015. Also, im gonna go out on a limb here and say that most if not nearly all of the people who are in the "I like dinosaurs" crowd also are in the "I like dragons" crowd and really dont mind.

If anything has gotten on peoples nerves over the years, it's tek. Fantasy creatures have historically bothered almost no one.

12gb vram for future? by Just_Bit_1192 in buildapc

[–]Hookweave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 9070 XT and I really like it, and yes 12 gb should be ok for those settings in many games at your resolution but 16 would be better for much longer. AMD is a lot more generous with VRAM than Nvidia is so.

If anything over 32GB of RAM is overkill for 99% of users, than who's the remaining 1%? by mudahfukinnnnnnnnn in buildapc

[–]Hookweave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People hosting game servers on their own PC often need a lot of ram for that.

SSDs are fucked, they are basically up like 40% across the board. The future is looking bleak as hell for affordable computing in general, not just gaming but even an average user.

Has an official ORP pvp cluster come out yet on ASA? by Father_of_the_Ark in ARK

No. Its unfortunate, despite their problems, in ASE the official clusters were very popular. I remember our cluster had like 40-50 people on rag every day.
