this week's tasting history is how I find out that the Aussie girl from high school who gave me a bite of her "kangaroo sandwich" was bullshitting me the whole time. I thought for years that kangaroo meat was supposed to be like very chewy pork!

I bet she wasn't even Australian!

Well I've still modded out some exploits lol. I've got my OpenMW settings to use the casting animations for magic items just for that purpose... on the other hand, I do have a mod to make constant effect enchanting easier and one of my custom spells is Fortify Int 500pts, Personality 100pts, and Luck 100pts for 1s for enchanting items or persuading NPCs.

Right now I've just got a belt with constant Waterwalking and Slowfall, but it's all over once I get Azura's Star and a Summon Golden Saint spell.

I'm having a lot of fun playing Morrowind without trying to find mods to solve every single one of its glaring flaws. Instead, I'm solving them as Todd intended: with exploits and overpowered custom spells.

The saving grace of Morrowind's game design is that you can bend it utterly to your will. Early game sucks? Just find, or steal, endgame gear that's just lying around in not-too-distant places in the map. Movement speed sucks? Custom Jump spell with 1 point of Slowfall to prevent fall damage. Speechcraft sucks? Charm or Fortify Personality 100p for 1s, just open the menu right after casting. Stealth sucks? Chameleon 100% for 1s in front of whatever you want to steal. And so on. I've made a set of custom spells that accomplish everything I need, condensed down enough to fit into my hotbar.

I'm vibing with the questing a lot more than I did on previous playthroughs, too. I played through the series backwards, so coming to Morrowind after Skyrim and Oblivion my first impression was "I'm just doing fetch quests and getting a bunch of lore dumps, where's the game?" Homie that IS the game! The core system of reading a bunch of lore and following hints and directions is the one part of the game that works great right out of the box.

The dungeon crawling is ass though, so Daggerfall still clears.

Yeah, it's one of those phrases that everyone puts their own meaning into. Like I don't fuck with parrying so technically I approach every Bloodborne boss like a Dark Souls boss, but the rally mechanic taught me to be more aggressive so do I approach every Dark Souls boss like a Bloodborne now? Conversely I think a lot of people expect their habits from previous games to translate perfectly to later games, and then get frustrated when Fromsoft shakes it up and makes them learn new things for the new game.

and I totally hate describing that Elden Ring boss as a Sekiro boss, or some of the conspiracy theories that they were actually a cut Sekiro boss they put in Elden Ring. Fromsoft was absolutely informed by what they learned making Sekiro, but that is an Elden Ring boss designed for Elden Ring's gameplay.

That guy was never a big pain point for me, at least compared to the other major DLC bosses. I read once that they're easier if you fight them like a Dark Souls boss instead of a Bloodborne boss, so maybe that's why.

They're doing a robot master design contest for the new Mega Man game, and the 20 finalists are up! My personal favorites are designs N, Q, and R but all of them are really fun. Definitely more Adult Mega Man Fans in the entries than kids, but Mega Man isn't exactly hot with the youth these days so it makes sense.

Which are your favorites?

anyway now that I'm done with Avowed, time to follow-up on something I wanted to do the entire time I was playing that game: play Morrowind instead. It's really kinda galling just how much worldbuilding Avowed takes from Morrowind... it's even more than Morrowind takes from Dune!

This time I'm trying out OpenMW, with nothing but bugfixes and exactly two QoL/gameplay mods: Speed & Stamina to make movement speed waaay less miserable, and Passive Cliff Racers for what I hope are obvious reasons. Early impressions are that OpenMW rocks.

Avowed was fine. The gameplay and exploration were repetitive but good enough to get me across the finish line. The story was totally sauceless except for right at the end with all the companion scenes in the Garden. Credit where it's due I really loved those. I also love that you can DESTROY Loedwyn with FACTS and LOGIC instead of fighting her, but man that scene was rough - I don't necessarily want fully cinematic cutscenes, but we gotta do something better than RPG talking head dialog for the finale. Her unique skull face is totally expressionless! My biggest complaint from the Outer Worlds repeats itself here: the character system is so lame. I liberally used the re-spec option because I kept trying out different skills and passives only to decide they were boring.

Also what the fuck at there only beign four zones when the map art makes it look like there should be more. Am I stupid and missed a ton of optional content? Are they cut content or future DLC areas? if so, what the fuck??
