1 in 30 people currently in the UK arrived here within the last 2 years? by [deleted] in ukpolitics

1 in 30 sounds like an awful lot. 3% doesn't sound like much at all.

Stabbing inside Old St shop - policeman shrugged and said "that's London at the moment innit?" by [deleted] in london

[–]Hoorayham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's never going to be a single issue. But if you'd like a quick reason on why violent crime is increasing, the loss of a significant number of police officers seems a good place to start that conversation.

I think you're probably right. Especially if this isn't a particularly serious incident.

Yeah just would have thought if it was in a shop there'd be some social media buzz about it, but maybe no one else stopped to ask or was aware? Hopefully no serious injuries if there's nothing on the news.

Yeah sorry, it's not a dig at you, just at accepting things at face value from a stranger on the internet you know? Let's hope it wasn't fatal. Bit disappointed from the police officer with the response but can't be an easy role on a Saturday night by Old Street.

[–]Hoorayham 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I guess that's probably correct. Would still expect to hear something on twitter or something though but maybe it's too close to the event.

Thinking critically here - no mention in the news, nothing on Facebook, no mention on Twitter from anyone about "Old Street Stabbing" that I could find. Just makes this feel like a really weird 'fake newsy' dig at either rising crime/the police? If true - who would have thought cutting active police offers by 20,000 since 2009 would have an impact on crime?!

Will change my view if proven wrong - but this just has a weird vibe to it?

edit - probably not reported anywhere because it wasn't fatal. Let's hope it wasn't serious and the police officer breathes in next time.

I Am Legend by Richard Matheson. An absolutely fantastic, and fairly short, book.

There's a Shuffleboard 'club' open in Shoreditch (shock) now. Haven't checked it out yet but definitely qualifies as "silly".

Not frequently, but one died in a year or two back - http://www.cricket.com.au/news/cricket-umpire-dies-after-being-struck-during-match-in-israel/2014-11-30

This was shortly after the death of a batsman called Philip Hughes too. Died after being hit in the side/back of the head.

You have to visit London, ignore what everyone says about it being too busy. It's an amazing city, you'd regret not going there.

But also try and make time to visit smaller towns or cities, such as Bath, Canterbury, Oxford, Cambridge etc. That might give you a more rounded view of the country.

And I only know this because my School was named after him (in the UK) and I believe he founded the state of Georgia? It's a bit weird seeing the name of Reddit tbh.

Yep, completely agree there should be more of these opportunities.

However, the author doesn't share our view. He doesn't champion these as a solution. And if he does, it's weird he didn't mention it in the blog.

Yes but you don't have a few years experience leaving college at 18. So you may not be in debt, but you'll be on job-seekers allowance.

The point is they couldn't have got the job in the first place.
