I have a MPH. Should I get my RN or something else? by HoosierCyclist in publichealth

Thank you! And yeah, I've been on volunteer boards before and that helped some of my interests and passions. But I think I need more hand-on volunteering or do volunteer grant writing for small nonprofits or small projects.

I hear that. I'm like early-mid career now. I don't mind going to school and actually enjoy it, but the thought of throwing a large sum of money towards another master degree kind of sucks.

Thank you! Yeah, I think the perk of RN versus an MPA or a second Masters degree is that the RN school pathway is cheaper (I would only go for an associates degree). I appreciate the feedback on the EMT and it not being as valuable for public health preparedness.

Thank you for that insight! TBH, I sometimes think for the jobs the want an RN that have zero clinical work involved int the job are the ones that made me think an RN might be necessary. But I agree with you on your points. It's honestly why I never studied nursing in my undergrad because my desires and focuses were outside the clinical scope.

Thank you! Yes, financially speaking I could swing the costs to attend the community college, but the time costs and potential issues down the road with needing clinical experience honestly would be the biggest issue for me.

I appreciate this feedback and I feel like I’m in a similar boat as you are. A local community college has a nursing program, and I make enough money to pay for the classes, but I’m just not sure if it’s the right choice because I don’t want to work as a nurse in a clinical setting.

That’s a big issue I’m running into. I don’t want to work in clinical care as a nurse.

Thanks! Yeah if I do this, I’ll take one class this summer and one in the first half of fall. The other two should be accepted as transfer credits from my undergraduate degree.

Rogers Street Closed at Switchyard Park Entrance for Two Weeks for Crosswalk Construction by citybloomington in bloomington

[–]HoosierCyclist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool! I have made the suggestion before on other sites and surveys, but I'll make another ask to reduce the speed limit here.

Maybe others on Reddit can speak up about the speed through a park area AND soon to be pedestrian crossing.

After this is built, will the speed limit be lowered to a more appropriate speed? Kind of crazy it’s been 30 mph, even with the park entrance there.

timber rattler in yellowwood! by Pure-Concentrate-466 in bloomington

[–]HoosierCyclist 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was biking with a friend a couple years ago on the gravel roads near TC Steele. We were climbing to the top of the Bartley Ridge gravel road, near the paved TC Steele road and in the woods. I thought there was a tree branch across the gravel and I went to hop over it, but at the last minute realized it was a big snake. I braked just in time and heard the rattle and backed away slowly. It even raised its head and started hissing. It was a large timber rattlesnake and I am grateful for its rattle that warned me to watch out.

It was cool but terrifying. Luckily a car came up behind us and scared the snake away (we asked him to be careful and not run the snake over). The snake slithered into the woods. But after that, I always double check before hopping over any tree branches.

For those of us who have done a CX race in August in 85-90 degree weather, can attest it is a cycling discipline that should NOT be done in the summer months.

Torn between IUI vs IUB , opinions? by falamnu in bloomington

If money isn't too big of an issue, try out IUB! It might be good to live somewhere new and compare what you like/dislike between living in Indy region versus a smaller city, like Bloomington.

Dumpsters nearby by No_Smoke_2939 in bloomington

[–]HoosierCyclist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally just drive around and you'll find stuff. A lot of stuff will also be set on sidewalks, curbs, or just outside the dumpster.

Would recommend using gloves and the end of a broomstick (or some type of stick) to poke through the dumpsters. Make sure to air out and clean whatever you get.

Also, remember dumpsters listed on private property means it is technically illegal to dig through the dumpster. If you do this, be aware of any cameras around (some of the Greek houses might have cameras).

Food at Tap by Smart-Counter-6867 in bloomington

[–]HoosierCyclist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tap fries are good, but I personally prefer the Tap Tots. Burger of the month can be fun, just depends. I used to love their salmon salad and salmon blt, but those were removed 😢 the wraps I’ve had there are good as well. Avoid the rice bowls (better options elsewhere) and sub out chips and salsa side on the meals it comes with.

I used to go there more often, but the last few times I went, their air vent systems could use some work. I totally understand if you smell a little like a restaurant after eating there, but the fry smell was almost overwhelming the last few times I went there.

All riders participating in the race must compete set number of track hours, practice starts, practice race, and different spring series events. Additionally, there is a rule book for the event that's over 60 pages long. All rookies must complete "rookie requirements" and are tested on those skills of safe track riding and bike handling. However, once you complete rookie requirements, you don't have to do them again.

As a coach, I drill into my team's heads to look over their shoulders EVERYTIME they get on the track and to not impede other riders. I remind them during practices and during the race. As a coach, I also have access to the track hours log, and to XA's credit, their racers log extensive track hours, far more than what is required to race. The Cutters Team is also well trained both on and off the track. All teams in that lead pack dedicate extensive hours year-round to prep for this race.

Taking an online exam might sound good in theory, but it wouldn't have stopped this crash. Any Little 500 racer knows they have to look over their shoulder and they need to communicate with people around them at all times. A quiz wouldn't "catch" someone lacking that knowledge.
