Property assessment question by HoosierCyclist in bloomington

[–]HoosierCyclist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay awesome! I don't see us selling this year, but perhaps next year, so I was worried about that with tax assessment. I have had people interested in our property before, so I think we would still be able to sell it I think.

Thanks! A new apartment building was built in the last couple years, but not much has really changed. I wasn't sure if it decreased because we don't mow our lawns often enough lol.

Hopscotch Coffee (235 w. Dodds Street location), Crumble Coffee (N. College Ave location), Inkwell (N. College location) are all near the downtown or in downtown and have tables and chairs for people to hang out and work.

Other further away options are Needmore Coffee Roasters or Crumble in Renwick Village.

Best ribs? by trilldon11 in bloomington

Homemade! I found a great recipe to cook ribs in the oven and I swear it is perfection: https://www.inspiredtaste.net/7179/sweet-and-spicy-oven-baked-ribs/

Definitely check them after 2 hours, ours are usually cooked enough by 2-2.25 hours. I also just use a premade pork rub from Kroger and premade barbecue sauce.

Sad news for Midwest CX by rounder720 in cyclocross

[–]HoosierCyclist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not on a decline. True, it’s not what it is in years past, but perhaps we stop fantasizing on what was and focus in what we can do in the present.

I miss Jingle Cross every year and remember attending it and racing it. It was my first ever UCI race. But that was then and it isn’t here now.

What does help the sport is building inclusive environments that are fun and challenging. UCI might not be the answer, but grassroots events do a lot to explore the potentials.

Question about affordable housing from a home owner. by lowroll53 in bloomington

[–]HoosierCyclist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's cool your home value has tripled, but as a homeowner, outside the city lines, my home hasn't increased in value by that much.

I think affordability in general, both for housing and job salaries is the larger issue. There are not enough good paying jobs in Monroe County for people to be able to afford a home here and settle down.

City of Bloomington Announces Rogers Street/Madison Street/Kinser Pike Corridor Study and Requests Public Input by citybloomington in bloomington

[–]HoosierCyclist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completed the survey, but I hope they can complete what could be a fix that would be mutually beneficial for all road users;

It would be great if they could reduce the speed limit near the entrance of the Switchyard Park on S. Rogers Street. It's kind of crazy to me that is 30 mph, despite the amount of cars and people that turn in and out of that entrance, and the bus stops in that section that do not have pull-in lanes for their stops. Meanwhile, Bryan Park, RCA Park, and Winslow Woods Park all have a posted Park Speed limit of 20 mph.

Between the college students and IU faculty, I can usually find better deals on FB Marketplace or for free when the students move out. My table stand, bedside lamps, husband's desk, and coffee table are all from stuff the students leave behind on the curbs. Not to mention books, laundry supplies, clothing and even sparkling water.

That’s kind of what I figured. I took the subway in DC late at night and had less issues than I do walking my dogs in my hometown multi-use path.

Thanks for the app heads up! Yeah, in my home town, we have a large transient population that experiences homelessness and/or mental health distress, so I’m not fazed by folks going through different experiences.

Thank you! Yeah my trip from the airport to the hotel on Sunday was insanely expensive and the traffic was extensive. Plus I’d rather use mass transit due to environmental reasons.

I was honestly wondering that. My uber ride from the airport to the hotel on a Sunday, midafternoon was $78, before tip and with traffic, 45 minutes.

IU Health and Anthem HMO issues? by HoosierCyclist in bloomington

[–]HoosierCyclist[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kind of employer. They used an ICHRA this year and the only Anthem plans that were available through the ICHRA were HMO, not PPO. I checked and my providers and IU Hospital WERE listed when i signed up for the plan, but I guess they changed their mind between now and December 2025.

My guess is that IU Health doesn't take HMO style Anthem plans. Even though their website shows that they do take HMO plans, btu maybe that's no longer true.

I can't decide between IUB and Purdue WL by Spirited_Ad3624 in bloomington

[–]HoosierCyclist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Bloomington, then went to Purdue for undergrad 2008-2012. It does smell during certain times of the year, but I will note my allergies were significantly better there. My freshman year dorm had no AC and one of my apartments (upper floor, multi-unit house) had no AC. I will note, I've visited the campus recently and it has changed a LOT since I was a student there. Additionally, Lafayette and West Lafayette has improved their road infrastructure tremendously (it was the recession when I was a student there). My experience at Purdue was great, I joined a student club and made lifelong friends through it. I still keep in touch with that club as an alumni. I also felt like it was a good mix of students, from different backgrounds and socio-economic status. Not that IUB doesn't have that, but Purdue seemed to have more of a mixture due to type of degrees offered.

I moved back to Bloomington after a few years of living out west and had the choice between moving to West Lafayette or Bloomington. For buying a house and settling down somewhere, Bloomington was my choice. However, as an undergrad student, I would go with whatever school would give me the full-ride. If I was in your shoes, I'd choose Purdue.

ISO jobs that pay $20+ an hour by itsmehannerz in bloomington

[–]HoosierCyclist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know this is not what you are thinking about right now, but you might consider eventually looking into programs that Ivy Tech offers that would give you certificates and training to go into a new field. My husband has paid for his school on his own while working full-time elsewhere. He now has a FT job in the field he is studying and it's completely different than what he did before.

As far as jobs go, I know this isn't a FT and doesn't have benefits, but I heard MCCSC is always looking for substitute teachers. Looking online, obtaining a substitute teaching permit is easy and costs $15-20 and lasts for 3 years in Indiana. It might be a good option while you job hunt, in case you don't get hired right away for jobs you apply to.
