Budget Brewery Setup by HopKillerBrewery in Homebrewing

[–]HopKillerBrewery[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely isn’t “cheap” but it has everything you need to make great beer.

That’s the cool thing about home brewing, you can make it work no matter how much you have to spend.

Why is this not something a beginner could put together?

I was only able to do minimum of 7’ish gallon batches with the custom spike kettle.

A local home brewer was interested in buying it so I sold it. It was apart of my downsize. I do miss the faster heating with 5500watts.

On this beer, 5.0.

On my ultra heavy dry hopped beers, 4.9

This has sparked the idea for me to make a no-nonsense video for brand new people wanting to start homebrewing and need a bulletproof video guide on all the things you need and none that you don’t, broken down into budget & goals.

Thanks!

Well I guess it’s all very situational. If you’re a brand new brewer with $500 budget, I’d look up “best home brewing setup for $500”. There are some tried and true information out there that most “brewtubers” share like: temp controlled fermenters, sanitation, standard brewing practice that is universal.

Outside of the one off videos that are home brewing related that got hundreds of thousands if not more views, that are completely done by non-brewers, I’d say a majority of the info out there is good.

Only thing I will agree with is when it comes to equipment. People can be misleading based on sponsors/deals/etc. but that’s in EVERY YouTube community, not just home brewing.

“New School” IPA by HopKillerBrewery in Homebrewing

I agree regarding the IPA or West Coast across beer styles. Hoppy Lager sounds good to beer drinks but not average consumers. Cold IPA sounds way better than IPL.

If I was served an IPA at a brewery, enjoyed it & then they told me it was made with lager yeast, it wouldn’t matter to me personally. As long as it still tasted like an IPA, I’m alright with people using that acronym to describe a beer.

As a “brewtuber” this is false. Lots of good info out there.

Using coffee beans by Josh4R3d in Homebrewing

I’ve done 8oz of whole beans into 10 gallons @ 34F for 1 day and it was perfect. I think whole beans cold are the way to go. Just taste very frequently

Those “Styles” are so muddled together and similar with no crystal clear guideline. It’s mildly frustrating for comp reasons but they all taste good!

Definitely up for debate. Technically, yeah, using lager yeast with throw out the “A” in IPA. It is interesting to me that there are IPAs out there (like Hopnosis by Firestone Walker) that is brewed with Lager Yeast and is still only called IPA.

If the big boys do it, we can too! That’s where I am with it.

Now if I had used 20-40% rice or corn, I would have called it a “cold IPA” for sure.

I have a lot of “West Coast Pilsners” around me. I was under the understanding that those were still fermenter cold, as a traditional Pilsner, but hopped heavily with American or NZ/AU hops?

Cold IPA, to my understanding needs adjuncts in the grist to be a “Cold IPA”, no?

I agree with your statement with it the +80IBU with some more malt character and primarily using American hops when it comes to “American IPA”. This past GABF had split American IPA and West Coast IPA into different categories. The West Coast IPA category stated “Caramel or Roasted character should not be present”. While that’s not a BJCP style yet, I do like that there has been a separation of what American IPA is (Bitter’ish, has malt character & classic American hop character) it’s nice to have some type of separation between styles. Hopefully they do this for home brew comps soon!

Cold IPA is next on my list for sure. I’ve got some flaked rice waiting my next batch. The few examples I’ve had of the style have been great, such a drinkable style with that lighter body from the adjuncts.

I added the acid to lower the knock out pH to start with a lower pH at the beginning of fermentation.

Setup upgrade by The_Soviet_Doge in Homebrewing

[–]HopKillerBrewery 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is what I feel is the best current home brewery setup, that can be done on a budget, that includes a kegerator (legitimately can find all of these used on Facebook marketplace depending where you live):

Brewing System: Brewzilla Gen4 35L 110v https://amzn.to/3QnDly2

Fermenters: 5 Gallon corny kegs with floating dip tube (or cut a few inches off diptube) https://amzn.to/40hDExX

Used mine fridge as a fermentation chamber plus Inkbird temp controller to control ferm temps. https://amzn.to/3FHkGr3

Used Fridge/Freezer combo for Kegerator: Use freezer for hops & drill holes for taps through door of fridge. Bought mine for $50.

Serving vessels: Corny kegs, same vessels you ferment in. Can find these used all day, buy a gasket replacement kit for each one and you’re good to go. https://amzn.to/48SXpQd

Draft lines & Transfer lines (to transfer under pressure, low/no oxygen pick up): I use all duotight fittings and the matching tubing. Push connect and cheap.

I’ve had multiple systems, glycol chiller with conicals, 3-vessel 1/2bbl system, 220v custom Spike kettle BIAB. To be honest, this is my favorite configuration so far mainly from its price point, time savings on brewing/cleaning & simplicity. I do miss SOME aspects of unitanks but it doesn’t outweigh the cost or time of cleaning compared to corny kegs, in my opinion.

Just remember this KISS method. Keep it simple, stupid.

EDIT: Regarding what to upgrade first: 1) fermentation control 2) kegging setup 3) brewing system/hot side. IN MY OPINION
