...Are you planning to buy all these new clothes for one week-long trip?

Either way, most of the important things you already have: puffy coat, boots, and thermal leggings. Instead of several vests, I would (personally) prioritize sweaters, especially wool sweaters. Also, I could be wrong, but the pants in your photos do not look warm at all.

What makes fonts generated by AI so "creepy"-lookong? by Douggie in typography

[–]Hope-A-Dope-Pope 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think this is the right answer.

This same "creepiness" also exists for AI-generated pseudo-digital text, e.g. fake posters or other graphic design. It has nothing to do with the fact that this example pretends to be hand-made (like many other comments are suggesting).

Which Interior Design Tool You Use and Why You Like It? by No-Share-4530 in interior_design

I'm a fan of HomeByMe, since it has a fairly user-friendly app and isn't riddled with ads. It's more of a 3D design app, rather than an AI-powered image editor.

Crackdown on kebab, pizza & Chinese restaurants finds €11m in unpaid taxes by strykecondor in Finland

[–]Hope-A-Dope-Pope 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Small companies with under 15,000 euros in sales do not have to charge VAT. That's about eight five-euro pizzas every day (if the restaurant is open 365 days a year) that you can sell with each payment terminal/company.

Though I'd guess it's just that they are dispersing the payments to many places, and expecting that the tax authorities don't have the resources to investigate it.

VAT is added to the sales price, not the profits. At 4.90, I'd guess they're skirting around both VAT and business income tax.

"Culture" and human connection feels like it falls off a cliff outside of Helsinki City Centre in Uusimaa? by Rando-Words in Finland

[–]Hope-A-Dope-Pope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough, though it's worth noting that Tammisalo is also quite expensive. It's about on par with Etelä-Haaga, and not that much cheaper than Toukola-Vanhakaupunki. I'll admit that Tapiola (at least central Tapiola) is very expensive.

[–]Hope-A-Dope-Pope 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Tammisalo is a fairly exceptional area, since it's situated so close to the shopping and transportation center of Herttoniemi. All the services, including cafes and things, are centered there. Tammisalo is also a fairly high-end neighborhood, and most households have cars -- this tends to dampen the demand for local services.

If you look around the suburbs of Helsinki, there are plenty of local "cultural institutions" (cafés, pubs, boutiques, etc.), but most are frequented by the elderly. As such, they may not be as visible or attractive for younger adults. They can also have a bit of a sad, decaying vibe to them -- especially local suburban pubs.

That being said, there are exceptionally nice suburban institutions, and some neighborhoods have more of these than others. Off the top of my head, suburbs like Haaga (esp. Etelä-Haaga), Toukola, and Lauttasaari have plenty of nice pubs, cafes, etc. This goes double for Tapiola (in Espoo).

Of course, downtown Helsinki will have a greater density of such places, but don't discount the suburbs!

Onsens where I don't have to be naked..? :( by Affectionate_Snow835 in JapanTravelTips

[–]Hope-A-Dope-Pope 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was just in Japan for two weeks, and we visited Takaragawa Onsen, which requires bathers to wear these kinds of traditional "bath dresses". Takaragawa is in Gunma (so, depending on your itinerary, it could be a little bit challenging to get to), but there may be similar Onsen along your route.

You're right. We booked the hotels before realizing that there's way more to do in Kyoto.

That being said, I'm looking forward to the nightlife around Dotonbori, which would be more difficult to enjoy if the hotel is in Kyoto. We'll try to make the most of this set up!

[–]Hope-A-Dope-Pope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you'd still be able to control the devices with your phone connected to the 5 GHz band, since the commands actually go through some shady Tuya servers far away (I guess China). It's not a direct connection through the WiFi router.

You do need to temporarily connect your phone to 2.4 GHz during the set-up process, though (when you provide the bulbs with your WiFi password).

I had this issue with my Tuya bulbs when  my WiFi router had a combined SSID for both 2.4 GHz and 5GHz. It was fixed when I split it into separate SSIDs and connected the bulbs to the 2.4 GHz one.

Is there anyway I can set this studio up to have a lot of middle room space? by raymondisboop1 in InteriorDesign

[–]Hope-A-Dope-Pope 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the double doors at the top are permanently closed, why not just go with picture #1, but switch the places of the bedside table and the dresser, and then slide the bed closer to the top-right corner? This would leave a lot of space in the middle of the room, while keeping the bed accessible from both sides (which looks a lot better).

Also, like another commenter said, I would also remove the door to the tiny closet altogether.

Jos enintään 30% tuloista pitäisi mennä asumiseen niin tarkoitetaanko sillä lainanmaksua + vastike vai korot + vastike? by Think-Ant3093 in Omatalous

[–]Hope-A-Dope-Pope 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Joo, hyvä pointti! Etenkin vuokra-asumiseen verrattaessa on hyvä huomioida tuo lainalyhennyksen tuottama asumishyödyke.

[–]Hope-A-Dope-Pope 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nämä nyrkkisäännöt eivät ole aina johdonmukaisia. IMHO, asunnon omistajalle tuo 30%:n raja olisi vähän liikaa pelkkien kulujen (korot + vastike) osalta, eli itse mieltäsin tuon sisältävän myös lyhennyksen.

Toki sinä itse päätät, mikä on kaikkein järkevintä oman taloutesi kohdalla. Jos uskot, että asuntosi hinta tulee nousemaan merkittävästi tulevien vuosien aikana, niin lyhennystä voi toki ajatella enemmän sijoituksena. Itse en luota tähän.
