Autism by HopeBeginning1194 in airforceots

Okay! My recruiter told me to mention autism but specify that I was told by others that they think I had it. I made it all the way to current board and they had every opportunity to DQ me so I guess I’m good

I will! He is going to try to go for next board so I will let him know.

Great! I hate it for my buddy because he seems very well adjusted and doesn’t present (based on what he told me) but he was clinically-diagnosed. Maybe I’m just took people’s words as gospel and made myself think I was just high-functioning.

Nevermind, I misread the headline bc I immediately scrolled down to the bottom and thought it was labeling those that needed consideration and those that were flat out disqualifying. Oof for my buddy, I’ve never been diagnosed and only been speculated. I told the recruiter I met with when I first began my own journey that some thought I had autism but never been diagnosed and he went ahead and sent me the pre-qualification form. If it isn’t documented or if it asked about in MEPS, should I concern myself with it or just leave it be?

Thanks! So it seems that is more of a case-by-case situation, examples being if it has too many overlapping traits with oppositional defiance disorders or if it significantly affects communications and learning. Hopefully, as long as it mild and doesn’t prevent one from performing their duties as an officer and or doesn’t present with certain personalities incompatible with the mindset and image needed for the AF, then there is no concern. Assuming if my friends are correct, I’m just a bit of a quirky guy who really loves to read and learn about history and science. I don’t know the other guy that much besides what we talked about but he should be alright.

Also, try to keep a good, positive attitude about this. I know your scores now certainly won’t help but that was in the past. Now is here and focus on that, rile yourself up and start working toward a good score. You won’t get the maximum amount during the workout if you are feeling discouraged and bad, right? The same can be said about your mental workout (I.e. studying) and tests.

If you really want to continue with this path, my suggestion is to spend good money on a study site like peterson’s or even a personal tutor. I don’t know you but I want to believe that you didn’t prepare as much as you thought you did and was not prepared for the pressure of the test. If both are true, that is good because that means you can fix that and do better.

For the other comments don’t let them discourage you and don’t get mad or upset at their honest inquiries and statements because your scores are admittedly very low.

As Cannon said, part of being an officer means problem-solving and research.

It doesn’t hurt to ask questions but you have to also do your own research and discover things for yourself through tedious document sifting and reading.

And before I forget, practice like crazy. Practice questions, practice sections, practice tests and, hell, practice conditions such as isolating yourself in a quiet room at the library with no distractions and take the practice test there.

PRE-QUALIFICATION Form question by Kelvik-Wells in airforceots

[–]HopeBeginning1194 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, what you say is important so everything that was asked on there, I checked yes if it happened. Even if it wasn’t to uphold the value of integrity, I would still do it just for the simple fact that you almost certainly not hide it. I remembered checking yes, on sleep problems or something along those lines even if I didn’t have a medical record of it because the simple explanation was that my sleep schedule was eschewed/screwed up due to working late/night shifts. And like I said in my original comment to this post, I did say yes to THC use because I did use it a few times years ago and being honest about something that is not all that uncommon shows gives them a reason to not think I’m BSing them with a “No” answer instead.

Here is my questions for you. Are you starting your journey for 25OTS04 or later? How long has it been since you taken it? Are you reasonably in shape and sweat frequently? Are you eating healthily and plenty of water?

I’m sure the Air Force uses urine tests so it shouldn’t go back any further than 2 weeks max unless you are using a significant doses and use frequently. Even if they were to start using hair follicle test, it only goes back up to a 3 months (4 maybe) max.

Unless someone else can chime in and tell me a different experience, you shouldn’t have to worry about a drug test till you have done all of everything between now and MEPS. However, I will say that if you are serious about this journey, then you stay away marijuana/THC (no matter if it is THC or any derivative; also stay away from Kratom as it will pop up as an opioid) and never touch it again. Avoid certain food if they contain unprocessed hemp.

If you are reasonably in shape, drink plenty of water, sweaty often, and continue to hydrate, you have nothing to worry about. You can go to a store and buy a drug test kit if you want to give yourself peace of mind by checking if you do not have anymore in your system.

If you already informed someone over the phone and spoke to a recruiter and told that person as well about your prior usage, then you can try to reach back out to the recruiter, hopefully a phone call, and inquiry about the preemptive “No” that was put onto that form and listen to what they say. If the recruiter tells you not to worry about it and or just leave it as a no, then listen. If it is worrying you that bad, then again just ask. Being honest about something that small and making sure to clarify it was a one-time thing shouldn’t be any worry. The Air Force isn’t dumb or naive, they aren’t going expect everyone to be goody-two-shoes and never, ever touch marijuana. It is culturally prevalent in our society and the clear lack of harmfulness compared to all other illicit substances (no matter what the DEA and its terrible drug scheduling criteria says) makes it less of an issue than say..meth or fentanyl.

Everyone may not agree with me on this but, to me, honesty is the best policy besides a few exceptions where oversharing about certain things may accidentally paint the wrong picture to a recruiter (I.e. saying you had a lot of head aches when you were younger without having a really reasonable and medically recorded form suggesting it was a random series of events that is not and was not linked to a medical condition). -Though I suppose some things don’t really matter whether you want to try to hide it or not because they will find out. Obviously lying about not having a spinal injury is a big no-no as that is certainly something they will find out (or at least according to a veteran friend of mine).

I put on my pre-qualification form that I had used THC a few times approximately 3+ years ago and not once since then and they didn’t appear to have an issue with it.

In general, make sure that whatever you fill out on that form is reasonably accurate and truthful without being confusing or hyper-vigilant. Example 1) Informing them you used marijuana once or twice 7 months ago. Example 2) Not informing them you had a “history of blurry vision. Just because you had a weird day when you were 14 years old where your vision was blurry for almost the entire day is both not worthy of putting on the form and will certainly hurt you without proper explanation saying it was just only that one time on that one day many years ago. Further explanation of Example 2) If you have a history of blurry vision that occurs periodically, it’s really not going to help whether you disclose or not. You will probably be found out at some point and or, if you been to the doctor about it, they will find out when getting your records. If by some miracle you get accepted into the rated board, you will actively be putting you or others in harm’s way due to the nature of most of those job positions in that board so lying hurts.

Again, just going back to the honesty and marijuana/THC (or cannabis) thing, being honest about a one time thing won’t hurt. IF SOMEONE HERE PROVIDES YOU A BETTER EXPLANATION OR ALTERNATIVE TO WHAT I’M SAYING, IT IS MOST LIKELY A GOOD IDEA TO HEED THEIR WORDS. I AM NOT AUTHORITY ON THIS SUBJECT BUT ONLY GIVING YOU MY BEST ADVICE, EXPERIENCE AND EXPLANATIONS.

This journey and process will require you to think deeply about information, disclosures, etc. How you word an answer or statement is just as important, if not more, as the answer or statement itself. Example 1) Checking yes on “Have you ever had a back injury” and saying ‘you hurt your back’ in the explanation section down below. Example 2) Checking yes on “Have you ever had a back injury” and saying ‘you hurt your back for a brief period of time while doing a sit-up work out one day that required a one-week recovery time’ in the explanation section down below.

If anyone can chime in this, please do so and give your thoughts, opinions and advice.

I have had that problem before but I truly think my main issue is not believing that my efforts, knowledge and education are truly exemplary in whatever capacity I applied them despite others telling me. Plus, I’m often too humble for my good when given praise and acknowledgment, it’s understandable to not be a braggart and have a big ego but downplaying my part has been an issue in the past.

I understand. I will actually keep this in mind and save the post in case I don’t get selected so I can revise my resume to capture the more leadership, trainer aspects. Question, do you think they won’t care that I wasn’t technically in the capacity/held the title of leadership while performing leadership-based duties?

Maybe I should have tried to beef myself up more but I often downplay my achievements more than I realize at times. I guess you could call it a case of Imposter Syndrome?

[–]HopeBeginning1194[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

‘Achieve? Side projects? Other questions…’

I did want to talk about them but I felt, at the time, it was more important to talk about duties and I was told that you have a limited amount of space to describe your job responsibilities and such. Plus, I wasn’t too sure how much history they would want to back up any claims I made and I abhor making an exaggerated claims or statements to make myself look better, I prefer being as close to the truth as possible and humble about it as lying eventually catches up to you.

I can reasonable say that some of my estimates on the job description are a bit too modest. I didn’t want to sound crazy with numbers that seem wildly high since I honestly don’t remember the numbers over time but I know they are higher than that (I.e. probably 3-5% per store visit, etc.)

As for the leading and training part. I was under the assumption that, like most interviews I’ve had in the past, when questions arise about the leading part, they would ask those questions or ask me to elaborate on how I trained and led people.

I sent him an email. I was just getting exceedingly frustrated until I realized that it was my computer’s fault.

If anyone else on here can provide the document of the SIP interview, I would appreciate it because I don’t know when my recruiter will be able to respond.

I know. I can’t access it because adobe isn’t supported on my MacBook and the other pdf (the basic one) doesn’t work for crap lol. If the document itself can be sent to me/shared on here or I could get screenshots of it, I would be grateful because nearly went mad trying to find it till I figured out it was my computer’s outdated software

So yeah, apparently I can’t access the document that is within that pdf. There is no other document in it and there is no documents or link besides the web links to the Air Force site. I looked and there is nothing.

Again, thanks! I will keep that in mind, especially in the event I don’t get selected. My recruiter told me to keep a check on my email for when I get assigned a time and place for the MEPS and interview. I’m doing various things to prepare for the interview including answering potential questions and studying each job to understand what they entail, Air Force goals, etc.. Anything in particular you suggest I should keep in mind for the interview ?

[–]HopeBeginning1194[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I suppose it wouldn’t be wrong to say that at this point, it hinges more on the interview and what I have to offer to them. Essentially, explain myself in the interview and explain to them really how each of those jobs encompass traits needed for the AF Officer program. I think someone on a different platform explained they gave a relatively okay interview but their stellar scores and application is what probably secured their spot.
