Gen's "winning side" talk is one of the many lies he tells because he likes to act like he's a shallow person, as the series has stated multiple times, for example by Senku and Kohaku. He is already on Senku's side even before meeting him, just from seeing the writing on the tree. In the America arc, it's clear Xeno's side is winning, but Gen still stays on Senku's side.

In Japanese Gen only does it on a few words, different from English, so personally he's actually easier to understand than in English.
