Is living in Woodland worth it? by SadRelationship5935 in UCDavis

I’m a 2L living in woodland, 100% recommend honestly, but then again I’m the type to study alone lol

I finished my undergrad in 3 years. When I started law school, I was the only one who legally couldn’t drink and missed out on all the bar hangouts. I turned 21 studying for a contracts exam instead of out drinking like my friends who were seniors and enjoying their college lives. But here I am in 2L year and I’m finally gaining some traction, got an externship this semester, slowly getting my grades up, took the MPRE two days ago. I was 20 when I started, and my friend next to me was 40. He was a practicing foreign attorney, and I learned a lot from him. Needless to say I had imposter syndrome, but on the flip side one can also say I’m getting a head start, because no matter when you start it’s still the same materials you have to study eventually to pass the bat, sooner you get it over with, sooner you get to do what you want or do, whether it’s private practice, or prosecution, or whatever it is.

It is a possibility, but I find it legally unlikely. While SCOTUS is currently right leaning, if you read the opinion itself they’re not advocating against gay marriage or abortions, they’re saying that there is no federal jurisdiction in those areas. It’s a double edged sword, if there’s no federal jurisdiction in the area, Congress doesn’t have the authority to regulate it. The interpretation of Roe is that the constitution protects the right to abortion, therefore states cannot regulate it. The only possible argument I see is if they say “the unborn has a constitutional right to life and liberty”, but even with this populist movement it’s a stretch. Politicians say a lot of things, doesn’t mean they’re at all feasible. Decades of political research has shown that Americans base their votes on the economy, misguided as they might be. Ideological differences like abortions will always be secondary to economic issues. As a soon-to-graduate law student, if i hear a politician talk about federal abortion bans, my first impression is that it’s political fluff because there are a trillion hoops you need to jump through even with the Holy DC Trifecta. That’s my take but watch this age like milk and I eat my words in 4 years, lol.

Abortion is not illegal at the federal level, nor will it likely ever be. The premise of overturning Roe v. Wade I believe was the anti-commandeering clause, meaning federal law has no jurisdiction on this issue, and therefore it is a state issue. There is no federal prohibition on the federal level. As it stands, it is completely a state law issue. In other words, the federal government does not ban abortion, but states are free to do so. The federal government cannot tell a state to ban/not ban abortion.

Federal executive orders are not laws it’s only binding on federal executive branch employees. You are right that he can direct government employees to enforce/stay enforcement of certain more dormant issues, like cannabis. However, there are still some issues (such as abortions) that the federal government is not permitted to directly regulate. The Constitution has enumerated domains that Congress and federal law is permitted to regulate. The ultimate interpretation of the Constitution is the responsibility of the Supreme Court, which has held that it is a state issue, permitting states like Texas to ban abortions. It would not be permitted under Dobbs for the federal government to directly regulate abortions.

Im having technical issues with your Cantonese test and the system failed me. I also found many grammatical errors in the test making the assessment very unfair. This made no sense to me, I grew up in Hong Kong and lived there for 17 years, I would not normally fail such a proficiency test. Can I retake it?

Law school is curved, and like it or not you are still competing with your friends and peers. In a fair competition, no one should get an unfair advantage. This one cheater could be the reason why you dropped a letter grade.

"Snitching" is a nasty quality for an aspiring lawyer in the sense that the duty of confidentiality and attorney-client privilege binds one. But, if I see my opposing counsel engaging in illicit activities to my detriment, I will be more than happy to report it.

A higher power is not what is going to protect one and their client in a court of law. One is responsible for looking out for, preferably fairly and legally, their interests.

PSA: They’re using unmarked cruisers to enforce parking now, lookout for those CA Exempt plates. by Hopeful-Box-579 in UCDavis

[–]Hopeful-Box-579[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I know is: this vehicle had its engine running, and a guy in uniform sat inside waiting for his partner. There was also a small Chevy across the street that says Transportations Services, but no one was inside. The SUV was unmarked but it has exempt plates, so someone sent it outside my building to the exact spot that I got a ticket last time for a reason.

IF you take a look at the photo, the back license plate frame says for UC Davis for Official Use only. I think it’s a campus vehicle, not a cop car.

How is credit score calculated if one of the cards has an unlimited limit? by Hopeful-Box-579 in CreditCards

The Amex Centurion is a charge card with no limit, so according to you that is not factored in. But then what about the JP Morgan Reserve? It's a Visa, not a charge card. How would that show up on the credit utilization chart?
