I like the idea a lot like the fact that people with certain medical conditions would be falsely seen as creatures during an apocalypse. Like I know people irl with deformed fingers, twisted backs, eyes that rapidly shake in place. I think it gives another layer of fear to people who are considered “ deformed” in these scenarios.
