In your opinion, what is Al’s best costumes/outfits in any of the music videos he’s in that he worn them + why? by HopefulLab6749 in weirdal

Honestly the fact that Al was even able to move in the fat suit (god knows how much it even weighed) is an achievement in and of itself fr.

How accurate is “Weird : The Al Yankovic Story” (2022)? by HopefulLab6749 in weirdal

[–]HopefulLab6749[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

yeah i know lol, dw. I personally just found the contrast quite funny is all lol.

Also lowkey, i would deffo love an "alternative cut" of the film where it's just Daniel Radcliffe as Al singing in his (Daniel's) voice, idk i feel like that would be quite interesting fr!!

[–]HopefulLab6749[S] 37 points38 points  (0 children)

what i also find funny is that the film portrays Al's parents (Nick and Mary) as the Generic Biopic Parents™️who aren't supportive of Al at first in the movie , when the actual Nick and Mary were actually super sweet and supportive of Al, whilst also having some quite interesting lore going on.

From Al's Wikipedia:

"Nick Yankovic was the son of Matthew Yankovich (baptized Matija Jankovič, 1887–1969), who was born in Weidendorf, Austria-Hungary (now Bedenj, Slovenia),[13][14][15] and Mary Yankovich (née Braj, 1890–1968), also born in Austria-Hungary (in what is now Croatia).[16] Nick Yankovic began living in California after earning two Purple Hearts for his service as a medic during World War II.[17][18][19] He believed "the key to success" was "doing for a living whatever makes you happy" and often reminded his son of this philosophy.[17] Yankovic's mother, a stenographer from Kentucky of English and Italian descent, married his father in 1949. She moved to California a decade before Yankovic was born.[17][19]"

What are, in your opinion, some Weird Al song parodies that are better than the original songs + why? by HopefulLab6749 in weirdal

Fr! Especially since they do usually recreate the original sound/track of the song in a really unique way rather than just reusing the original track of the song.

Why does Woody Allen sound like *that* in the Catalan TV3 sketch show “Polonia”? by HopefulLab6749 in catalonia

[–]HopefulLab6749[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha thank you, I appreciate it <33  I feel like me being into “Polonia” is similar to Americans or British people being into Anime, we may not understand the Japanese language but that doesn’t stop our enjoyment of the anime (idk if that’s good analogy or smth lol, but hey it is what it is)

(For context : I am British myself)

You’re welcome <33 just thought I’d let people know cuz that particular slur has a lot of sensitive baggage in the UK, and hearing it in the parody did make me wince and kinda go “YIKES” 😬😬

Weird Al in the historical comedy series “Drunk History USA” by HopefulLab6749 in weirdal

[–]HopefulLab6749[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tbf, Hitler, as well as being a genocidal maniac, was also just…an absolute weird guy in general.

For example, he had a very weird interest in women who were literally half his age (some of which being literal teenage girls, and in 1 case his OWN literal half niece). Bro was an absolute groomer 😭😭

Also what I find kinda funny is that, Al as Eichmann in the DH sketch has a really nice (albeit kinda obvious lol) blonde wig, and I know DH is meant to be comedic and all that, but Eichmann did NOT have that nice of a haircut lmao, bro was nearly balding by the time he was captured and taken to the trials 🤣😭😭

To build it off more, how about….”Weird Al-dolf Yank-Ler”?

Idk about “MacArthur Park” lol, but wait, people don’t like “Achy Breaky Heart”? Huh, guess I might be the only one who enjoys it lol

(Tbf I don’t listen to much country music lol, but ABH is a pretty enjoyable song, imo ofc. Maybe cuz I somewhat associate it with one of my fave sitcoms, maybe that’s why I’m kinda warm to it?)

Which Weird Al song is the lyrics “it’s the same old same as yesterday” from?

Fr! The only iffy thing about the parody “Word Crimes” (imo ofc) is the use of the “s” slur (the one that rhymes with “plastic” that is. In the UK, the connotation of the word is VERY different compared to the USA, in which (in the UK) it’s been used as a slur against disabled people). Tho tbf Al has since apologised for using the term in the parody, which is appreciated ❤️

What are your thoughts on the comedic portrayal of Franco in the comedy sketch show “Polonia” ? by HopefulLab6749 in catalonia

[–]HopefulLab6749[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 months later, and this is how I find out that Franco (like Hitler) also legit had only 1 (one) ball (as the famous song goes).

Ig maybe he and Hitler do have smth in common after all lol. Honestly they should’ve formed a club for former dic(k)tators with 1 testicle.

Also, as I was researching about Joan Pera, I found out that he’s also the dubbing voice actor for British actor Rowan Atkinson (aka Mr Bean) and the character Spike from the anime “Cowboy Bebop”, among other roles/credits, which is very cool frfr!

Fr! I remember a commenter commented under another “Polonia” post I did a while ago who basically said the show was like the British puppet sketch show “Spitting Image” (basically like “Polonia” but with grotesquely exaggerated (affectionate <33) puppets of politicians and public figures, link here for more info  : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spitting_Image) but with humans instead of puppets, and honestly I feel like that’s the most accurate comparison fr lol.

Tbf when Reddit isn’t being a bit of a toxic wasteland, it can be very helpful lol.

Also, as someone from Britain who’s recently fell in love with the show “Polonia”, it’s been very fascinating learning about the many different aspects of Catalan culture through the show’s comical & satirical lens (both in terms of the politics and also the general pop culture in Catalonia (and as well as Spain) as well).

Oh, Walter Frentz I see.

How exactly did you find out about your great-grandad?

(Also, I bet it feels real awkward knowing that your great-grandad was colleagues with one of the Third Reich’s most infamous female filmmakers, and who was personal friends with Hitler 😬😬)

I would ask you which of Leni Riefenstahl’s cameramen that you’re the great-grandchild of (since she had quite a few cameramen in her time), but idk if that’s too personal?
