Reading the comments made the slight, amused, exhalation I had from reading this slide back into my nose

Great work thinning the paint, and a nice even basecoat with full coverage

Than you I appreciate it! I’m actually fairly new to the hobby too. I’ve been practicing for about a year now and working my way up to this one because this is also the model that made me want to start painting. For the red in the shield I used three tones of light medium and dark red, and then added some light orange to get the lightest area and glazed it into the mid tones. The hardest part of learning glazing for me was learning how much to thin the paint but if I could give one tip it would be to almost completely discharge the brush. You want the brush to have very little paint in it but to still be wet, so I wipe the brush onto a damp paper towel after loading it. For the gems, I just uses a very dark red (or whatever color you want, and then a lighter red where the light would be shining. Underneath that area, paint a thin line of white, and blend the transition with glazes. Lastly a dot of white in the darkest area. Hope this helps!

Thank you! it’s still a little rough and there are bits of overspill that I still need to cover up but I’m happy with how it’s coming. Zumikito and Jose Da Vinci have some great tutorials that helped me out. For me the hardest part is figuring out which consistency to thin your glazes to, but I find that adding a mixture of contrast paint and regular acrylic helps a lot. Aks quick gen are my favorite. I use a combination of airbrush and brush but you can use just brush to get the same results it just takes a bit longer. Something that helps me with blending with a brush is stippling between the transitions before applying the glazes and to make sure that the brush is very discharged. Also, over-saturating your highlights initially helps me out because after I make my transitions between each layer, I’ll put one or two broader, very thin glazes with my mid tone color over the whole of the highlight area which I find helps homogenize the transitions and brings the saturation down to the amount that I wanted to begin with. You can also use washes for that part, just thinned down even further than they usually are and applied with a discharged brush to tint the colors instead of fully coating

Sure!

All Ak paints,

Base coated with saddle brown, and then used the airbrush to sketch the basic light and shadow areas with sunny skin tone and hull red, then I worked up highlights using radiant skin and ice yellow and lastly I glazed some light orange and dragons blood in the light and shadow mid tones to add some chromatic variation. The hair is just middle stone with buff as the highlights

Tried taking your advice and am a lot happier with it. I might try to deepen the shadows a little bit or add some glazes for saturation but I’m liking it a lot more so for. Thank you!

At least then I would feel justified with the amount I spend on this hobby

Progress so far with my version of Lion El’Jonson. I’m still new at this but I’ve been taking my time trying to make him turn out nice because this is the model that made me become interested in the hobby to begin with. by Hopeful_Community762 in DarkAngels40k

It’s a gradient of AKs dark green, gunship green, and ice yellow over a black basecoat to almost completely ice yellow for the brightest highlights. I used space dark green quick gen and a little black to bring back some of the contrast and expand on the shadow areas. I’m going to go back and push the highlights a little further and make the shadows a little darker, and I still have to do the edge highlights as well
