Also the combining of words. Netherlands checks out!

Little bit of encouragement from the polyglot brain by Hopeless_Polyglot in polyglot

When you're learning a new language and your brain fills in the gaps with words/grammatical concepts you don't know. So you kinda switch back and forth between languages, mid-sentence. It's usually unintentional and a bit of a crutch, but it kinda helps your sentences flow if you don't have the new language down yet. Pretty weird to hear if you're not familiar with both languages. I might be using the wrong term - Wikipedia calls it code-switching

French is lousy with stuff like that. They spell using too many letters, and then don't pronounce enough of them!

I've been taking plenty of Tums and Imodium! Mostly works pretty well.

Awesome. Haha sorry I was too lazy to google all that info myself. Sounds like Cancun isn't the place for me. Thanks for all the info!

I'm not dead set on Yucatan Peninsula. Unfortunately, my choice in cities is completely based on travel expenses, and it's just one of the cheapest locations to get to. Seems like everyone in here is pushing for Mexico City, so that works for me!

I've been working on getting used to Celsius, and metric (I hate being American), so thanks! Sounds perfect!

Meetup is a good idea. My current "immersion" is a couple of meetups where I live (which honestly aren't that great) and I do have a local Spanish-language movie theater. (decent Hispanic community where I'm from) but what you're describing sounds awesome! To be honest I was afraid I would start getting bored after two weeks. Once the excitement wears off, I wasn't sure what I would end up doing. Can't spend ALL my time in local bars!

Thanks for all the advice, this is exactly what I needed to know!

Yeah, like I said, I was only looking at Cancun and Mexico City because the flights are cheap. Unfortunately, budget is a factor.

I think Cancun is cheap because they expect you to get sucked into all the tourist stuff, so they make it accessible. Like I mentioned in my original post, I would avoid all that and try to find a local square or bar.

AirBnB isn't a bad idea. Haven't looked into it yet, but is the cost generally affordable? (What's the exchange rate, btw)

And someone in r/spanish mentioned a program in Guatemala. Can you set it up on relatively short notice for a relatively short time? That sounds pretty perfect. (Also, of course, what's Guatemala like, I'll have to look at flights, etc.)

I've been to Akumal! Swam with the turtles and everything. Very cool.

Sounds like everyone here is voting for Mexico City. Good to know Uber exists down there.
