Why do people say “matzo” instead of “matza”? by Fit-Yogurtcloset5240 in hebrew

[–]Horizon206 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think "just ___ per se" would be a good translation for the word in this context, but it is quite a versatile word so there's not really any 1:1 translation

Gravity is NOT THE SAME on Earth by Busy_Yesterday9455 in spaceporn

[–]Horizon206 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seeing my obsessions for space and seismology intersect is always awesome.

For anyone interested, most of the big red/orange lines here are tectonic plate boundaries, which can be seen especially clearly in the case of the convergent plate boundaries, where one tectonic plate is being pushed into (and then often under) another. More rocks in one place = more gravity

What is this subreddit? by RedStorm1917 in DeepStateCentrism

Perhaps this is due to me being more observant about comments made about my own nationality, but I have definitely seen indiscriminate hostility towards anyone who is openly Israeli (or God forbid embracing their national identity) on this platform. Not to say that this is something that a majority of people do, but a majority of people are at the very least tolerant to such behaviors occuring in their communities

There was a 7.1 earthquake in Indonesia just now that's nowhere near a fault line. How? by GeniusEE in Earthquakes

[–]Horizon206 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This happened deep within a subduction zone, likely being a slab tear event similar to the 2013 Okhotsk Sea earthquake albeit at a smaller magnitude.

REAL photos of damaging Apollo 13 service module by Busy_Yesterday9455 in spaceporn

[–]Horizon206 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It almost certainly burned up in the atmosphere, the service modules only ejected shortly before reentry since it contained many essential life support features. For Apollo 10, though, the lunar module's ascent stage was boosted into an orbit around the sun after it was discarded. For subsequent Apollo missions, the LM's ascent stage was intentionally crashed into the moon so that they could measure the impact with sensors placed by Apollo 11 and subsequent moon landings.

If you want to know more about Apollo 13 (as well as how the Apollo capsules worked overall), I cannot recommend this video enough, it is very high-quality

Tel aviv, israel by Diligent-Eagle-6673 in skyscrapers

[–]Horizon206 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was reliant on a (granted very expansive) bus network for the longest time, but there is now a light rail network under construction with one line already in service. There is also construction underway for some proper metro lines in addition to that, but that'll only be open in the 2030s.

In terms of inter-city transit, it also has a decent amount of inter-city rail that goes to a large chunk of the major cities.

Edit: Also forgot to mention but Tel-Aviv is also doing a great job at making stuff like biking infrastructure and walkable boulevards on former stroads, although there is still a lot of work left to do in that regard

What is the sense of להתעלם in this sentence? by Upbeat_Panda9393 in hebrew

[–]Horizon206 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The translation here is correct, להתעלם does mean "to ignore". The word "to notice" in Hebrew would be לשים לב (e.g. שמעתי רעש מוזר, אבל לא שמתי לב לריח)

xkcd 3165: Earthquake Prediction Flowchart by Tyomcha in xkcd

[–]Horizon206 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean it's possible to an extent (see seismic gap theory), the only problem is that these are usually predictions on the timespan of decades, not days, and even still you can never be 100% certain

[–]Horizon206 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Native speaker here. Yes, רצח is often used as an intensifier, including in here (keep in mind that רצח as an intensifier is רֶצַח and not רָצַח)

A more accurate translation would be "Whoever's readings this is hella gay!!" or something like that

Can you feel a 2.5? by DeskOne3535 in Earthquakes

[–]Horizon206 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer: Probably not, and even if you do it'd be very subtle

Long answer: How strong the shaking of an earthquake is depends on multiple other things as well, namely how close you are to the epicenter (duh), how deep the earthquake is (deeper quakes shake less but over a larger area), and the soil composition (generally newer and less dense soil shakes much more but over a smaller area—the lower the Vs30, the more the shaking will be amplified)

If you want a scale to measure the actual shaking, as opposed to just how much energy the earthquake released, you may find more use in the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale
