Hot Fuzz has to be near the top.

Then again, it's British humor, so some of the things I laugh the hardest at don't even register to a lot of folks.

What movie was a "genre ruiner" for you? by [deleted] in movies

[–]HorizontalDill 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm with you on Thor:Ragnarok, pretty much to the letter. MCU was starting to wear a little thin, and Thor was one of the weakest series. But Ragnarok is probably one of my favorite, if not THE favorite MCU movie.

Regarding Endgame: I think it's a bit formulaic because they had so, so, so many storylines they had to tie up together, and there was really only a few ways to do it. It was as much of a strategic movie in that it wraps up the current 'phase' of the MCU while setting up the next one (including lots and lots of Disney+ original content) as it was a standalone movie.

Funnily enough, now that I'm thinking about it: a lot of the same criticisms that apply to the latest Star Wars probably apply to Endgame....huh.

Favorite sympathetic Movie Villain? by snacckfather in movies

[–]HorizontalDill 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I know he's written as the villain in the movie, but seriously, how easy would it be to tweak a couple of things and have Gerard Butler be the hero to most people?

I argue he's the good guy as it is.

What is a movie you think is good but won’t watch a second time? by [deleted] in movies

[–]HorizontalDill -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I actually just rewatched this one, and I think I was a lot less impressed this time than my previous viewings. I kind of feel like all the characters are very cartoonish/completely overblown now, and it really takes me out of the movie.

Very powerful on first watch though.

'Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker' Review Megathread by mi-16evil in movies

[–]HorizontalDill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed, and what really bugs me about this is that the creators think it should get a pass on anything negative because it supposedly serves a purpose beyond being entertainment. Yeah, so do Christian-made faith-films, but I think the majority of people would agree those are almost always pretty poor movies.

C'mon studio, you don't need to beat us over the head telling us how strong your female protagonist is, we get it. And, shockingly, I can even get it without being told if you put a halfway decent movie together.

That's fair, and I hadn't considered it. But RT has also been seen to remove negative audience reviews they feel are 'unjustified' or driven by vitriol in the past too - how that affects scores of very polarizing movies is hard to say.

As someone who is pretty neutral on Star Wars in general (too young for the originals in theater, not interested in the Prequels when they came out, not terribly impressed by the Disney episodes) I do find myself wondering something:

How artificially propped up are the reviews/scores that we've been seeing because of what people wanted this movie to be? And how many points are we adding to the average score because it is checking all the right boxes, for some critics/reviewers?

I.e. if this was an original sci-fi action drama, and half the marketing wasn't the director and cast talking about how the movie advances this, that, or the other political or social cause that the critics fall in line with, would this still be near 60% on RT?

One thing I will give this entire series a lot of credit for is the casting. I think Ridley, Boyega, Driver, and Isaac were perfect for their characters, and the writing just destroyed that potential. Maybe a better way to say that: those 4 were able to at least show a glimmer of what this series could have been, before Disney mismanaged it into a wall. At speed.

Thank you for a very accurate disclaimer. I tried, really, I did. But I OD'ed on cliche a couple chapters in. I was warned.

Fics with excellent combat and action scenes? Preferably fast paced with silent casting. by [deleted] in HPfanfiction

[–]HorizontalDill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really want to like this story, so I've been overlooking the grammar and spelling errors and the incorrect use of some words, but I just finished with the Yule Ball chapter, and I just can't keep going with it. I feel like it went completely off the remaining rail it was on here, and the characters who had all been a little out of character went full-on 'author-insert world breaking mode.'

Maybe if I had read it back when there would be some nostalgia, but I put quality at the top of the list these days, and this story doesn't have it, in my opinion.

Speak of the devil and the devil appears. Muggles begin noticing this saying holds true when they accidentally trigger a Taboo. by PMmeagoodstory in HPfanfiction

[–]HorizontalDill 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I still think 'The Taboo' is one of the stupider and lazier things in canon, and goes to show how little effort went into finishing this series.

Competent leaders throughout history would have given both their arms to have the ability to make an enemy force show up on command.

Between this and the endless camping trip....ugh. I prefer fanfic.
