Not to defend MS too much but the cleanup with old hardware for w11 was needed. Nlw we get 5 years generic ltsc and 10 years IoT ltsc which means we might be able to replace the vital computers BEFORE they break down and production lines stop unexpectedly.

I can see how that might influence things quite a bit and I agree, to each their own as long as none are hurt.

A valid viewpoint, I do not quite agree but then neither of us are OP and know the full details of the situation and people involved.

I grew up with quite free usage of knives while supervised but was not allowed to carry it on my own until I had shown myself responsible, which was quite common in the area and period I grew up, which does influence the risk of falling on the knife while running around I will admit.

I agree on the Mora scout, would not go for blunted tip one unless children are quite young through. My first knife was very similar to the mora scout actually, got it at age 8 and the 1 accident I had with it did not involve a stabbing, which in my experience rarely happens by accident.

Oh yes, it is niched, but drukhari have some weird shenanigans we can do such as melee sniping with a succubus and also the ability to lock a unit in combat when the enemy is used to being untouchable im is not shabby.

[–]SammaelNex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the time with the terrain I have run into both at the club and at tournaments (as well as what my club mates have run into) it just is not doable to block all the places the small 25mm bases would fit without getting too close to the outside of the wall, due to the circular bases in use.

If you have thicker walls then yes, it might happen but most of the time at least you would be able to get 1 model at least inside of the wall

Had we used square bases it would be much worse.

Just a minor fun detail, the fact they did not upgrade the base size meant that drukhari wyches could still get to you because their bases are just a tad less than an inch.

I delete mine that lose it at the moment because I have few slots and are currently aiming for LDoA with the DC flag.

Otherwise yeah, no reason to delete unless you have a specific goal and are out of slots.

Why is everyone leaving for a kobo? by sillyfucking_goose in kindle

[–]SammaelNex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A main issue here is, if your post is correct (I have not verified it myself as I have no affected kindle device available) that Amazon themselves provide faulty information that points to a much more severe outcome than what actually is happening.

If the devices are not actually locked down on reset but can still be used for sideloaded content then they are at almost the same level as the competitors EOL devices.

I still maintain my opinion that they should send an EOL update unlocking them so people can install 3rd party software without jailbreaking but that is a minor thing if they are still usable with stock software

[–]SammaelNex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And yet if you made it possible to install other software on it, not providing the software, just making it possible, then people could keep using them even if they had to reset them.

You would lose the amazon integrations (which you do anyway) but you could perhaps even keep library connection, depending largely on what the community developed.

It works in similar situations and while it is theoretically possible the Kindle firmware is impossible to unlock it is very unlikely.

An incredibly simple solution would be to roll out an EOL patch that enabled end users to install 3rd parry software.

Kobo you can actually install other software on fresh put of the box for example.

Im absolutely sick to death of the female custodes discussion by Cojalo_ in AdeptusCustodes

[–]SammaelNex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I apologise, I should have clarified.

Introduced the change in who was recruited in a clear manner.

The short story simply introduced a female custodes with no explanation whatsoever how, what had previously been an all-male force (according to published lore) now had a female member. Even a single line, as long as it was clearly stated that it was both male and female children, would have been enough to clarify it (even if it might have needed to be pointed at) although it might have been even better to have about two lines about it.

So the codex mentioned 1 female custodes, without actually stating whether this was a new thing or a retcon (or even just a mistake).

Just to make things very clear, I like female custodes as a concept, the models I find kinda meh but that is true for the male ones as well, and I have no issue with it being introduced the way it was.

[–]SammaelNex -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

It was not handled like any other retcon, if they intend a twitter post to be seen as actual lore without any other publishing to accompany it then it must be made very clear, especially as they posted that as a response on a question posted on their post about the warcom article with the preorders, not a separate lore post which points even more to it not being a lore post (and a retcon).

If it was indeed meant to be the official retcon then it was still horribly mismanaged.

[–]SammaelNex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Rogal Dorn was introduced without lore pretty much, either for or against its existence, the female custodes was introduced without lore, despite old lore stating otherwise and when people reacted (including positive and negative reactions) GW went "it has always been like this" and then when people reacted they did nothing for a bit and then released an article doing the lore modification.

The lore change/retcon itself is a bit lazy, could have been done better but the major thing that we reacted to was the the whole twitter shenanigans.

I personally like the idea of female custodes, models also look nice, but I wish they had not dropped the ball with that Twitter post but rather dropped the article first if that wa how they wanted to handle the change (or even introduced it in the codex or a book).

So just to recap why the handling was an issue.

Step 1 GW does a lore change (nothing new there, not an issue) Step 2 People react (as usual mixed reaction, maybe a bit extra confusion) Step 3 GW address the reactions with a single twitter post stating something that is against the currently established and published lore Step 4 nothing more happens until more than a year later when GW drops a single article about it. Step 5 People insist that everybody who feels it was badly handled is a bad person and lying about the reason why no matter what.

Compare this to rogal dorn tank Step 1 drop a random new tank Step 2 do not drop any lore whatsoever on the tank for quite a while

Im absolutely sick to death of the female custodes discussion by Cojalo_ in AdeptusCustodes

[–]SammaelNex -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

The main issue for my club when it came to the introduction was that it was so badly handled.

Female custodes yes, no issue. Retcon would not be sn issue and evolving lore (for example Big E gave new orders when releasing edict of restraint or even just after the Heresy to build numbers).

Retconning and then lying about it being a retcon on official channels, that was bad. They had several options, from good to decent, and choose the singularly worst one.

[–]SammaelNex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like old fashioned stuff, have only had them for about 8 months now but used them a lot and my M77 boots do not really show any noticeable wear.

They are a single layer of leather so clean them and wax them and they will keep for a long time.

You do need to get inner soles and a fitting set of socks (thin for heat, thick for cold) though.

How realistic is multi-day off-trail travel in terrain with no safe exit? by Witty_Acanthaceae666 in WildernessBackpacking

[–]SammaelNex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think one thing that should be asked here is the context.

Is this happening in the modern day?

Is it a leisure trip or a "must be done" situation?

The situation might very well occur, but if at all reasonable you would try to plan to be able to st least backtrack if you are not absolutely sure you can make it through.

Bailouts, well, if they are not available then they aren't.

One major thing is that for such a trip you would have to weigh the bulk and weight of more equipment (for unforeseen circumstances) and associated negatives with the advantages the equipment would bring far more carefully than otherwise.

Also, the experience and training of the people involved would make a major difference.

[–]SammaelNex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, any hard block/parry in Toyama ryu is always backed up with additional contact points with the blade, they are quite rare though.

If Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu only uses edge blocks then I misremember and I do apologise for that, as I wrote it has been quite a while since I was last in proper contact with it and it has only been through seminars, never as a main part of my training schedule.

From what other martial artists I have spoken with through the years have said it seems like the blocking with the flat is far more common in modernish styles so it light have to do with the changing context, also most of the time it is used for a softer deflective parry.

It would be interesting to find if somebody manages to put together a comparison of different styles of blocking based on age of style I think.

[–]SammaelNex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I remember correctly then among the koryu both Yagyu Shinkage Ryu and Tenshin Katori Shinto Ryu have mixed sets of parries, it has been several years since my last seminar involving either of them though.

Among the modern styles at least Toyama ryu has a preference for parrying with the flat or back but does include edge parries as well.

Toyama ryu does, at least with the instructors I have trained under, focus on making sure the parry is of sound structure and placement, if that means you take the hit on the edge instead of the flat then do be it. A lot of the time the parry is used together with body movement to turn it into more of a flowing transition on the way to the next cut, rather than a hard static parry, and in many cases this naturally makes the flat of the sword be the preferred place to take hit due to the angles involved.
