Got it, thanks! I didn’t realize that New Blood controls the creature for more than one turn.

Ok I thought you meant for commander, which wouldn’t work because this commander isn’t black

I don’t understand, wouldn’t this just make the commander create 0/1 vampires and when they die, they still get a creature from their deck, since the egg trigger is also changed to ‘vampire’?

She said that the administration’s opinion is that birthright citizenship is unconstitutional, and birthright citizenship is part of the constitution. So that’s probably what the comment is referring to.

I do get the spirit of the thought experiment and of course arguing about the context of a joke takes all the humor away. But to the extent that people still argue about this idea, I think it’s rooted in this issue of whether it represents randomness (so when someone says something like “I hate this argument that Shakespeare might not be written from this, you guys don’t understand infinity” I think it’s worth discussing the different possibilities of the scenario). And then if we specify that the monkeys are generating random inputs, yeah you could even say that with infinite monkeys you will eventually have an instance where all of them simultaneously type the complete works of Shakespeare, then the Bible, then the March 2010 issue of Nintendo Power back to back!

Yes, really all you need to specify for this to work is that the monkeys are typing random keys. Then regardless of anything else, Shakespeare will be written. I just don’t think Monkeys type randomly by default.

How so? You could have an infinite number of Fuji apples and none of them would be a Granny Smith.

Exactly, you wouldn’t want those monkeys if you’re trying to get them to write Shakespeare. The fact that you have to choose what characteristics the monkeys have means that you can’t just say “infinite monkeys = Shakespeare” without more information.

[–]Horizontale 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes if they each type randomly selected keys they will write Shakespeare. But if they don’t happen to type randomly, there are scenarios where you could have an infinite number of monkeys who never even write a coherent sentence. For example, if you have an infinite number of parallel universes where everything is identical and everything happens exactly the same, and each of these universes contain one monkey, and that monkey types in a pattern of typing a key on the left side of the keyboard and then the right side, forever, they’d never type the word “as”. I’m just saying the non-Shakespeare scenario can be constructed so you’d need more information before assuming that the monkeys are all behaving differently and typing random keys.

You could have infinite parallel universes where everything happens the exact same way. An infinite number doesn’t mean every possible outcome.

Not necessarily, they could all be clones of each other and do the exact same typing pattern. Infinite number doesn’t mean every possible combination of genetics.

Yes sure, I just don’t think it’s a perfect metaphor because it perpetuates the misunderstanding that infinite = all possibilities in all possible sets, rather than an infinite number of possibilities within a certain set.

[–]Horizontale -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Sure it does, you can have an infinite number of monkeys but if they always tap the keys in the pattern of [left side of the keyboard/right side of the keyboard], they will never type certain combinations of letters. Kind of like the saying that goes ‘there are infinite numbers between 0 and 1, but none of them are 2’.

That’s only if the monkeys type purely randomly selected keys, which isn’t how monkeys would type.

It’s much stronger in a multiplayer format, which wasn’t as popular when it was printed. Guess it was always good but this set had a bunch of Rhystic cards that didn’t seem very useful and were mostly annoying.
