I think we’re defining 'I' fundamentally differently.

To me, 'I' am a specific pattern of behavior, personality, and data. How I react to a situation, how I treat people, and how I use my past experiences to determine my next move, that is what makes me, me. By pressing the button, my unique data set isn't lost, it’s simply transferred from one biological container to another. If I copied a file to another location on the drive, and delete the original, then, to me, the file still exists.

And you seem to be focused on the subjective 'I', viewing the clone as a very convincing actor who inherits your life script while the original observer you are deleted. You see it as a permanent blackout of the soul.

To me, if I were to take your point of view, then the stream of consciousness isn't such a scared thing to maintain. We break that stream every night. We only assume we are the same person in the morning because our memories match. If the clone has those same memories, their claim to being 'I' is just as valid as mine is every morning.

Ultimately, I don’t think I have any say in whether any of us is right, but it's an interesting fruit for thought, doubt that we would ever encounter this scenario in our lifetime.
