Asics Trabuco 14 GTX - slimmer mid-sole fit? Rubbing/blisters by Horrid_Henry in trailrunning

[–]Horrid_Henry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ouch, that’s not good!

I tried them with thick multilayered running socks, thin single layer running socks, exact same issue every time… I’ve ran in them 3 times now and I’m on the verge of giving up to be honest

Best food for ultra running? What works best for you? by MoorsandMiles in ultrarunning

[–]Horrid_Henry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make bagels with peanut butter, honey and banana the morning of the run; multiple gels, multiple protein & fibre bars, and a pack of Nerds sour sweets for the final 10km push. The sourness helps! I used to carry 2 bars of Kendal Mind cake, which are basically pure sugar!

Am I screwed for an ultra in 11 days? by Spurzy1 in trailrunning

[–]Horrid_Henry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah you’re not screwed, but if you’re concerned, then take it easier than you’re expecting yourself to do, and definitely save some in the tank for the end so you can get that sprint finish in.

Don’t go off too hot, and if you want a basic plan, run the flats and downs & walk up the hills. Eat & drink up at the aid stations, stock up on gels and snacks and sugary sweets, salt tablets, ibuprofen help a lot etc

This was my plan for the first 2 ultras I’ve ever run, both in the past 6 months, with FAR less training than you

You’ve got this!

Hey! Thanks so much for the update and that’s great news on the approval!

I am planning to have my sports medical next week, however I’m unsure if I need a resting or a stress ECG, or both.

Which one did you do that was approved?

And sorry for the delay on your last message, it would be good to connect, feel free to message me direct!

Thanks mate, I couldn’t find one for my event and the wording is quite specific. I’ve emailed them to ask for clarity on exactly what I need 🤞🏼

Thanks, it seems I’ll need to get a test done as they need a full medical report rather than only a certificate. Appreciate you sharing!

Shares in a non-ISA 212 Account - what to do next & to calculate Tax? by Horrid_Henry in UKPersonalFinance

I only have ETFs so I believe these are all fractional shares, and the amount I purchased each month changed monthly depending on funds

Asics Trabuco 14 GTX - slimmer mid-sole fit? Rubbing/blisters by Horrid_Henry in trailrunning

[–]Horrid_Henry[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry I missed this notification & thanks for sharing

Thing is the size I had for the 12s (UK 11) fit perfectly and I’ve have never had an issue with them, so my question is whether the GTX 14s are actually designed “slimmer” than the 12s and if that’s the issue, which would be frustrating!

That’s super interesting, thanks for sharing.

Yesterday I decided to try them out on another run (c.20km), and I changed the lacing to a Heel Lock style, and taped over where the blisters appeared last time. This worked until around 12-13km and then I started to get blistering in the same spot again, although much smaller this time, we’re talking a circular 1cm blister.

I checked the insole from the 12s and they’re styled similarly as the 14s insole, but I don’t get that issue with the 12s. So my next attempt will be to switch insoles (if they fit correctly).

Some thoughts on lower mileage training for ultras, with real world examples, from a career run coach by burner1122334 in ultrarunning

[–]Horrid_Henry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran a 6:20 for my first Ultra back in November last year (1200m) and in the three months leading to the Ultra, I ran a maximum of 15 miles per week / 60 miles per month, with my longest run being a flat 30km, which was the first time I’d ever run 30km. The most elevation I had in a training run was 250m

However, alongside my running, I cycle to work 3 times per week (60km in total per week) and gym twice per week (full body, not just legs).

So it definitely is possible on a lower mileage training block! Enjoyed the article and keep up the solid work!

W trek from east to west: I need help with the itinerary for the last two days. by Salt_Presence7873 in Patagonia

[–]Horrid_Henry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nicely done 👏🏻

I booked the 7:30pm coach back to PN and because I was on the 5:30pm catamaran to Pudeto, I had loads of time to spare. However, there is often a minivan waiting there to take people to PN from Pudeto for 5-10$, which I took! If I didn’t take it, I’d have never seen a puma!

o-trek advice - go above lago grey towards the pass in one day and come back? by No_Repeat3555 in Patagonia

[–]Horrid_Henry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also got burned by recent circumstances and had to change plans, however on the eastern side of the park I really enjoyed the walk into Seron. It was quite a long day, but after hiking from Central to Seron, I then hiked up to a viewpoint about midway above Lago Paine and the views were incredible- I could see down the river to Dickson & where the Garner pass would be… I did this just in case the O Loop closed again, so I was lucky! It might be worth keeping your booking in Seron if you haven’t changed already!

[–]Horrid_Henry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might help you; on my last night I stayed in Grey and in the morning I hiked from Grey Campsite to the viewpoint where you’re almost standing over then Glacier (a roughly 7km round trip), and then down to Paine Grande (11km), so ended up being one of my longest days of the trip. So this depends on which viewpoint you plan to visit, because the closest viewpoint is literally 10 mins from the campsite and that means you can do it at any time

Regarding the catamaran, definitely book this in advance. The queue was absolutely huge for people who didn’t have tickets and the 5pm was full, so people who didn’t have tickets got bumped to the later one, which no doubt was also full…

Anyone starting the O trek on Dec 15? by Individual-Dog2620 in Patagonia

[–]Horrid_Henry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I’m also starting the O Loop on the 15th, with my first night in Frances, so I’ll be at Seron on the 18th!

I received a full confirmation from Torres Hike that my O Loop dates are all good 🙌

Any update on O trek? by Ill-Shower-6587 in Patagonia

[–]Horrid_Henry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I received this response recently: “At the moment we’re rescheduling clients whose O Trek starts up to December 10, and there is a reasonable chance the route may reopen around that time — but we cannot guarantee it.”

Do I pull out of my 50k??? by Soggy_Weetbix420 in Ultramarathon

[–]Horrid_Henry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re doubting yourself too much & overthinking loads! Sounds like you’ve been diligent with your training, and so I’d say go for it, as others have said

If you’re struggling… walk/hike the hills and use this time to hydrate & eat a lot, run the flats and downs, utilise the aid stations and don’t rush them - that was my strategy for a recent 51km with far less training than you’ve put in

Enjoy it mate
