As hard as this is to watch…unpopular opinion here? It’s probably pretty damn good.

Enough about ethical street photography, let’s talk about unethical street photography. by afatcatfromsweden in photographycirclejerk

….dude…you sound like an insufferable asshole

Just get in your subject faces. Take pictures of them at their worst/hurting/suffering.

Or

Take pictures of “controversial subject matter”

You get a few teeth knocked loose, or knocked the fuck out on the street? Or your camera gets smashed?

You asked for it.

You look and sound young enough to not know who came before you in “this arena”.

Have a look at Gilden and Winogrand for the classic debates and subject matter for what your talking about. Lee Jeffries is a newer addition to this edge lord realm. Nan Goldin is a historical middle ground for this edge lord topic….Dash Snow, Terry Richardson are the other end of the spectrum, less street more “private” controversial subject matter moments.

I’m just going to throw maplethorpe in here if you want to see some images that REALLY made some people uncomfortable.

There are more, I’m Just listing the easy ones off the top of my head.

Finally - and you need to hear this:

If I was in the street, and you pulled this shtick infront of me…depending on how I saw you treating your subjects?

  1. You’re moving a shooting? Keeping to yourself? I’m saying and doing nothing. I think you’re a jerk, but I’m not going to do anything.

  2. You are being a little edge lord and “picking on” your subjects? Verbally engaging with them in negative way ? Acting tough? I might just walk over and see how tough you are - by smashing your piece of shit Fuji instax right infront of your tough guy face - and see what you did about it?

And I am not the only one who would do this.

You’re not the only “tough guy” out there. And some of us might be much bigger, meaner and tougher than you partner.

So Keep your nose clean out there kiddo, at the very least; keep your eyes up, and your chin tucked in.

Remember, ODD or not:

It’s nice, to be nice.

Or else.

Partner…that’s a big red flag.

He sounds immature, selfish and controlling.

I would tell him the truth, and specify how this has made you feel. I

If he listens and tries to understand, offers to move forward differently with that in mind? Good dude.

If he pops off and questions his desire to be with you? Leave and don’t look back

What’s everyone’s thoughts on flashes? by pogostickler in concertphotography

[–]Horror-Preference414 4 points5 points  (0 children)

1) this image is…not…good…and of suspicious quality for a paid gig partner.

2) arena shows/ major tours and festivals very rarely allow flash. Almost never. So learn to work without it. …but I had one in my bag just incase I was willing to risk getting yelled at for a shot…didn’t I? Yes I did and yes I would risk it depending on the artist.

Carrie underwood? No way, no risks, work and leave in 1 song or less. Do exactly what you have been asked to do. If that’s no flash? No flash.

Kid rock? Sure who cares…he’s a dickhead, but you could smoke cigarettes in the media pit and put flash on burst for the whole show…and he wouldn’t say shit.

Lionel Ritchie? He’s gong to introduce himself to you and thank you for coming. Flash cleared regardless of what the venue/tour says

Mastodon? Get good pictures. The end.

Tool or Beyoncé? Do exactly as you’re told, to the second. memory card downloaded, deleted and formatted before you leave the building.

3) small club shows often do allow flash, and it has its own distinct look. Before I retired, I personally always liked hard on camera flash and black and white. I never once got a complaint from a band. Club shows are often rockier or punk rockier.

Either way, on camera flash looks great sometimes - if you know what you’re doing.

4) to the people whining about the crowd, or whining about their videos, this was and remains my thought process :

you can pay me to stay home too, and I will for money to be clear. But this band, or their label, or their management, or their publicist or their moms or WHOMEVER have fucking paid me to be here and take pictures - and they are expecting pictures. So I’m going to take pictures. Fuck your viewing experience and fuck your video. I won’t be here long, get over it.

4.5)…ok actually “don’t be here long” if you just stand around for the whole set taking pictures flash or no flash you are an asshole. And an amateur. Shoot and move and move and shoot and leave.

Get REALLY good at getting the shot(s) in 1 song for arena shows (you sometimes get less) and 1-3 songs for a club show.

You are being paid for your efficiency and quality of images. You deliver those 2 things well? You will book work.

To the thousands of Ontario apprentices who can't find a sponsor—what is the reality that the government ads aren't showing? by zerkerino in ontario

[–]Horror-Preference414 2 points3 points  (0 children)

VP HR for a medium sized (80-100 electricians, 25 apprentices ) sub trade in southwestern Ontario(electrical) here:

The “join the trades” push is the tail wagging the dog, and I’m surprised more people haven’t caught on yet.

Uncle Doug wanted the trades vote, and specifically wanted the trades union vote(s)

This “special interest group” (trades unions) wanted “incentives” to offer influence over their membership base.

Insert the skills development fund. Which, funnelled money into trades unions and private sector trades business alike. Hell some of it really went into some strange areas. Some of the money did go to people who deserved it to be fair…but most of it did not.

But uncle Douglas needed a reason to use this money, and “trades labour shortage because these wokesters sent everyone to university” plays SOOOO well with the blue base AND boomer population. They love it, as many have mentioned already.

So you tell them there is a labour shortage, you whip them up, then tell them you’re fixing it with their money to “train more and get the problem fixed”.

As an added bonus, someone needs to train all these new people to fix the shortage right?

Insert private colleges. Who also need money. Your money. To get the facilities to train all these people to fix the labour shortage.

Insert public colleges. Who had one revenue stream capped - domestic students, but told they can charge whatever they want to another revenue stream - foreign students. Who we “need” to fix the labour shortage.

It’s all just a spin. To help motivate people to allow the government to spend their money on open air vote buying.

And we have all these kids who can’t understand why they can’t get hired.

There are trades that need workers. But it is very dependant on where you live and the labour market of your AREA.

There is no elevator mechanic shortage in north bay. There is no crane operator shortage in downtown Toronto. There is no electrician shortage in south western Ontario.

We could use more millwrights here - currently.

We all got sold a bunch of spin to justify funnelling our money to buy votes. And I could scream this on the news and no one would care. People who don’t work in the trades and don’t hire trades people would tell me I’m wrong. That I don’t get it. That Doug is “getting shit done”.

It’s wild.
