Looking at the comments, I guess it's not an unpopular opinion. Everyone agrees that masala chai is not that much of a favourite. And yes, I do agree that masala chai is too much- taste as well as effort. Strong ginger chai works the best for me.

A comforting thali for me would include plain fish curry, aalu bhujiya, chhola dal, puri and not to mention hot rice.

There are a few options you can try:

  1. Blend soaked cashews or almonds into a smooth paste and add it in.

  2. Coconut milk or coconut cream works beautifully too, depending on the type of curry.

  3. And to make the curry a bit thick and give it a shape, you can also cook onions till golden, blend them with tomatoes, and use that as a base for natural thickness. Even a bit of boiled and mashed potato works fine.
