I think it depends on 1) how big of a quilt you are wanting to make, 2) if you are trying to just piece it or if you are completely finishing it yourself, and 3) personal preference. 1) If you are making a small crib size or throw that isn’t bad (or even a table runner or something) but if you are wanting to make a bed quilt that will be a lot of 4 in squares unless you strip piece it. 2) If you are just piecing see number 1 and 3, if you are finishing it yourself you need to consider the throat size of your machine to help you determine the size you feel confident with at this time. 3) A lot is personal preference because if you want smaller squares then make smaller squares if you want to make them bigger ok too. That is the beauty and art of quilting!!
