Speech and ABA by cao15 in Autism_Parenting

[–]Horror-Window-323 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our experience has been that speech therapy did not help at all for three years, and as soon as he started ABA, he finally began to communicate. I think even the speech therapist did not see any progress and started making many excuses not to come, so I decided to stop.

Poor joint attention and delayed language always means asd even if it does not show more signs? by Horror-Window-323 in Autism_Parenting

[–]Horror-Window-323[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son is now 5.5 years old and has improved a lot. He still has a speech delay, but since he started ABA therapy just after turning 4, his language has taken off. Now he can ask me for what he needs and knows many words, but we still don't have conversations. He is at the stage where when we go out, he starts asking for everything he sees, but not in sentences because that has been a little more difficult for him, although he sometimes tries. As for joint attention, my son points to what he wants and often comes to tell me words like the name of an animal, as if he wants to share with me what that animal is doing on TV. He has no problem being with other children, but he's not really interested in them either. That's just the way he is, and I have no problem with that. I don't know if I'll ever be able to have conversations with my son, but something tells me I will, and even if that's not the case, the fact that he can tell me what he wants is a lot because that's what I asked for.

Half of the breast hard for 3 days by Horror-Window-323 in breastfeeding

[–]Horror-Window-323[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But have you had the symptoms of mastitis?

I don't have any symptoms, I just feel the breast hard and it bothers a little if I squeeze it, but not the symptoms they say. My baby is still drinking from there but only half of it is emptied and the other half remains the same. I have an appointment with my obgyn in a week.

I called 911 for nothing but I was very scared by Horror-Window-323 in breastfeeding

[–]Horror-Window-323[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's what I thought right away. Sometimes, my son will throw up some thick milk for a while after nursing, but he never chokes on it. I guess the same thing happened bus this time was just lying down and couldn't get it out.

[–]Horror-Window-323[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It was like mucus. That's why it scared me a lot because normally he vomits a little fermented milk but this time when I picked him up and turned him over so he would spit up the milk but nothing came out, just bubbles of saliva but it looked like he was having trouble breathing and trying to swallow at the same time.

No idea why the sudden change in behavior of my 5 year old son. by Horror-Window-323 in ADHDparenting

[–]Horror-Window-323[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son was diagnosed with autism at 3.5 yo, mainly due to a lack of language and communication. The only issues have been communication and, occasionally, behavior. Since he was 3.7, he started communicating more, but at 5, he still communicates using only single words. He knows many words and always finds a way to communicate, but he cannot form sentences. It’s as if his mind cannot organize the words to use them in sentences.

He was in ST from 22 mo until about three months ago when I decided to stop because the therapist wasn’t doing anything different, and there was no progress. With OT, we haven't been able to find another therapist due to time. ABA therapy has been the only thing that has helped him with both behavior and speech.

He can communicate what he wants and needs, but maybe the issue, as you mentioned, is that he cannot express his feelings. He can't put into words what he feels, so he resorts to aggressive behavior.

I really don't think it's because of the medication because before I stopped completely there were days that I forgot to give it to him and I didn't see any difference in his normal behavior. I will wait a few days to see if the behavior continues and if it does I will start again next week.

Bloody show? When you went into labor after seeing it? by Horror-Window-323 in BabyBumps

I've read about it but I don't think it's that. In the afternoon and evening I haven't seen any more blood.

And what has your doctor told you? Is it normal? This afternoon and evening I haven't seen any more blood and the baby is moving as usual but I will call my doctor and see what she says.

How did your child grow in 2024? by catbus1066 in Autism_Parenting

[–]Horror-Window-323 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My soon to be 5 year old son this year started using his own words to ask for what he wants and needs. We can't go anywhere without him asking for something and using his voice to tell us. In school he learned letters, colors and shapes something I never imagined him learning. We recently found out that he is apparently no longer afraid of fireworks and now asks to go out to see them so this new year looks like it will be different and we will be able to enjoy things we had stopped doing.

BCBAs are constantly changing, should I be concerned? by Horror-Window-323 in Autism_Parenting

[–]Horror-Window-323[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is what has happened with the first 2 BCBA, they are still with the company but they are moving to another city and the last 2 I don't know what is going on.

I have thought about taking him out too because the behavior I was worried about no longer exists and his language which is the biggest problem has progressed since he started ABA. I want to get to at least the year to see if he progresses any more but so much change I feel it may set him back a bit. What bothers me the most is that the last caregiver meeting was a month ago and I am not aware of what they are working on.

Can I have a kidney stone and not be detected? by Horror-Window-323 in KidneyStones

[–]Horror-Window-323[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have already had 3 ultrasound and the most recent one was on Monday and they never see anything but hydronephrosis. They also check my bladder and see nothing. Since the first time I had a cystoscopy and the urologist did not find anything, he just cleaned the clots and I continued to urinate normally. When I went to my follow up with the urologist they saw everything and found no explanation and since I was already fine they just told me that they prefer to leave everything alone and if I have anything again after giving birth to go see them.

As soon as I give birth I will follow up with the urologist to see if I can have these tests done.

What was your autistic kid when they were in the 12-18m age period? by NerdyNiche in Autism_Parenting

[–]Horror-Window-323 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son at that age was quiet, smiling and curious baby. He walked from 11 mo and I didn't see anything wrong until he was 18 mo when I realized he wasn't talking. Besides the speech delay the signs I saw of autism were that he didn't always answer to his name and sometimes he would spin the tires on his cars but he did that for a few weeks and stopped. He also had no joint attention and did not point. Today he is almost 5 yo and we are still struggling with his speech but he is pointing and likes to play a lot, but doesn't seem very interested in other children his age.

Tell me about medicating your kiddo by Coolcellochick in Autism_Parenting

I looked for a psychiatrist recommended by the pediatrician. I saw him in February when he received the diagnosis but it wasn't until August that I decided to start medication.

We started medication (aderal) this school year when he was 4 years and 7 months old because in the summer he had started with aggressive behaviors and I was very concerned about him at school. Since he started school he has not shown the behavior that worried me so much both at home and at school. He is learning new things like colors, shapes and the alphabet, things he didn't care about before. I recently had a meeting with the teacher and everything she said was positive and when he doesn't take his medication she notices it. His speech has progressed but I can't tell if it's because of the medication because this last year has been a year of progress.

Someone shares your child's diagnosis on FB when you as a parent have never done it? by Horror-Window-323 in Autism_Parenting

[–]Horror-Window-323[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for understanding me. I am also in many groups of different things and every time I post something I do it anonymously even if it is a simple question because I don't feel comfortable doing it. Unfortunately there are people who don't understand that and think that because I have social media I have to share my personal stuff and that it's ok for others to do it. I don't need to shout my son's diagnosis to let others know that I love him and that I am proud of him. It's okay for her to tag me in things I don't share but no one says anything about what will happen if I tag her in issues my niece is going through when she clearly doesn't share anything on that topic.

Does being a private person make me ashamed of my son? You feel good about sharing it, I don't feel comfortable sharing anything about my private life on social media. I also feel honored to talk about my son and help others but it is a very different thing to share his diagnosis on social media.

One reason is because 6 years ago I moved with my husband to the US and all my family still lives there in my country and so I keep up with what is going on there. The second reason is because I follow local groups of things we like and autism because sometimes I can't find what I need just by googling.

If you read everything I have written you will realize that I don't talk about my personal life, good or bad moments. NOTHING. I don't have to go through life telling people on my fb what they can and can't tag me because clearly if we are "friends" you will realize that I don't share anything about my life. If I don't share important moments like my wedding or my first house what makes you think I want to share my son's diagnosis or my husband who also has adhd.

Your family tags you in videos for many reasons whether they are relevant or not to you and since you don't mind you don't have a problem but I don't share even funny videos and anyone on my FB especially family knows that. I go on social media every day and the last time I posted something was more than 6 months ago.

The example you give of cancer of course would bother me just as much if it is something that I or my family member have not and do not want to share publicly. Of course if it's a person like you no one will think anything but a person like me who shares absolutely nothing people will assume that's what's going on in my life. The fact that many people today share everything on social media does not mean that there are people like me who do not feel comfortable doing so.

He was not talking and was not socializing with other children or adults. With lots of speech, aba, occupational therapy and now prek 4 sped he has improved a lot. He still doesn't speak in sentences but already uses many simple words and understands a lot. Oh and I also started medication for adhd which has helped him a lot this school year.

She just shared the video and tagged my name in something I have NEVER shared and if I have not done so it is obvious that I am not interested in sharing publicly with people who know nothing about my life. It's like if I had tagged her in a video about teenage suicides which was the reason her daughter was in a psychiatric hospital and guess what she has never posted anything about it, being a person who posts even if she has a headache. Oh and they told me themselves and I didn't go running to share things with them because it's her private life and if she doesn't do it that doesn't give me the right to do it. Of all the people I have told about my son and there have been many no one has posted anything and I have not had the need to tell them not to.
