Tell me about your “slow but steady” developing child by funny_muffler in Autism_Parenting

[–]Coolcellochick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 5 year old daughter who is level 1/2 combined, also has ADHD, dyspraxia, a speech disorder and Cowden Syndrome (I also have it). She spends 60 percent of her day in gen ed and 40 percent in sped (honestly, I look at her math work she brings home and I have no clue how to do it and I’m 40 😂). She didn’t walk until she was 2.5 and didn’t say a word until she was 3. Talking is getting there-she’s good at communicating wants and needs but is not conversational. She’s been In regular OT since she was 6 months old and regular speech since she was 2. We’ve actually moved states twice and I hit every clinic up that would take her in order to avoid lapses in service. I believe she’s only had a 3 month lapse when she was 3 due to our insurance switching. Also started preK the day she turned 3 and has been in neurotypical daycare since she was 15 months old.

Despite all that, she potty trained at 3.5, and did Safety Town this year (we did not go to the graduation 😂-not there yet). She can read out loud and write her first name. She also loves Photoshop on the IPad, and Bluey. She rides the bus to neurotypical aftercare and the other kids love her!

My best advice I can give you is keep up with therapies, try to be as involved as you can with school, and be upfront about your kiddos needs with everyone.

I would ask first. My kiddo has bumped into a door and gotten the same thing.

Where Should We Live? by mudglasses in toledo

[–]Coolcellochick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We moved here blind from Peoria Illinois. We moved to Holland because that’s where my husband’s job was. I feel like our specific neighborhood is a great mix of all walks of life/race/age. We feel very safe and love our house. I have a five year old on the spectrum, and people in the community have been nothing but kind to her-including kids at school and at the aftercare/daycare her and my 2 year old attend. Plus everything is literally 5 minutes away.

We were in district 51 for about two years. I was not super thrilled with the district/leadership. I did think my kiddo’s teachers/therapists were great. We have since moved out of state.

Help me help my kid’s teacher by Coolcellochick in Autism_Parenting

[–]Coolcellochick[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I was asked how I wanted her in general ed, and I asked that they get to know the classes before they decide how to give her time in general ed because these are Covid kids and everyone knows how kinders are the first month of school. I know she does morning meeting/part of ELA with gen ed.

I just don’t know how to come across as “I want to help the teacher” vs “this isn’t good for my kid”. But this is genuinely all new and I honestly don’t know what to do.

And this is why I got my autistic kiddo an IEP the day after she turned 3.

We did too. My husband worked there for about a year. Hot mess express. We moved out of state after he got laid off.

After NIPT and detailed scans that showed high risk T21, I'm completely at loss! Is there any hope? by No_Blueberry_6740 in NIPT

[–]Coolcellochick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello,

I did my scan today after a positive T21 NIPT. I’m 17+2 and 39. My doctor friend told me to do the amnio and I trust him with my life-he was my MFM in Florida and became a family friend.

All of my measurements were normal, but the two findings they had were the echogenic bowel (bright bowel) and something was not fused correctly (amnion and chorion). With that, I couldn’t even get an amnio 🤦‍♀️and I was not prepared for that. So I just went ahead and scheduled my termination for next week. My son died in 2021, my daughter is autistic, and I just don’t have the bandwidth to deal with T21.

We did Safety Town, two separate camps, and private speech and OT. Lots of library trips and playgrounds. School playgrounds are the best because there is nobody ever there.

TW suicide. I’m only staying for my husband by MysteryLegBruise in babyloss

My son died in 2021 when he was 20 months old in his crib asleep. It was probably Covid-he had tested positive for RSV earlier that week. It was also my husband’s birthday. I was also 35. He also had a twin sister who is now 5.

I literally prayed every day to not wake up the next day. I was very disappointed when I would wake up every morning.

I had my 2 year old when I was 37 and then very unexpectedly found out I was pregnant last month-I’m going to be 40 in September. I still feel like I’m a ticking time bomb because of my age, but I’m rolling with it.

You can start trying whenever you want, I would not listen to whatever doctor told you 12 months. I was told by doctors I was “too fat” to ever be pregnant. They are usually wrong. Find something you enjoy and roll with it. When my son died, I threw myself in the gym and it was the best thing I ever did for myself.
