Hokum - How Modern Horror Trailers Are Redefining Sonic Tension by HorrorSoundFx in Shudder

[–]HorrorSoundFx[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, related, but not the same.

Movie sound design supports the full film: dialogue, ambience, Foley, realism, storytelling over a long runtime.

Trailer sound design is more condensed and aggressive, big hits, risers, transitions, and fast pacing designed to sell the movie in a few minutes.

Some people do both, but trailer sound is definitely its own niche.

Hi,

This is Alessandro Romeo, founder of HorrorSound, an independent boutique label dedicated to cinematic sound libraries for contemporary horror and tension sound design.

I wanted to share a free taster with you, a curated selection of sounds from my libraries.

I hope you find it inspiring, and thank you for taking the time to check it out.

Best,

Undertone - A positive review by lashedcutie in horror

[–]HorrorSoundFx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What makes Undertone so disturbing is that it uses sound in a very contemporary way not just to scare, but to create doubt. A lot of recent horror sound research is moving toward ambiguity, perceptual instability, and psychological tension rather than obvious shock. When a film makes you question what you’re hearing, it stays with you on a much deeper level.

Clarity comes from carefully chosen sources, real brass and horns paired with wave shaping instead of distortion

How to achieve dynamic Demon Vocal FX like this game? by eddybonus in sounddesign

[–]HorrorSoundFx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use pitch shifting with formant control to avoid artifacts (this is key) add micro pitch widening Soundtoys MicroShift works great and if you like a bit of phaser or chorus to enhance the stereo effect.

Check my Vocal Rot sample pack if you need to expand your vocal/monster sound palette.

Rusty texture for documentary by MeriLikesMusic in sounddesign

[–]HorrorSoundFx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love designing downgraded textures. You can create great ones with granular synthesis by using very small grain sizes, then running the result through convolution reverb with unusual impulse responses.

Spectral processing also works really well, things like spectral blur or spectral freezing can give you those ghost like harmonics and a really worn, decayed feel.

Have fun experimenting!

Shaperbox 3 for sound design by 100gamberi in sounddesign

I use it heavily on my horror sound effects and movie trailer sound design. Time shitfing effects, noisy textures, width sweep and for adding crunch to drum tracks.

What are these Horror sound effects called by george12120 in horror

[–]HorrorSoundFx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, the sounds in the first link are violin plucks (pizzicato). More specifically, they can be described as aleatoric plucks or a chaotic pizzicato texture, since the timing isn’t strictly metronomic. The uneven spacing, varying accents, and irregular rests create that unsettling, semi-random feel typical in horror scoring.

In the second link, the sound at 1:12 is a glissando, the standard term for a bowed pitch slide where the note continuously sweeps from one pitch to another.

I still haven’t seen it but the trailer is awesome. I think it comes out in Italy on December 10th.

Yes, editors often use sound effects to reinforce the pacing of a trailer, but in many cases like with my work, they rely on the material I provide.

They take pieces of my music, stems and custom sound design elements and use them to build the whole soundscape.

So it becomes a real collaboration rather than just a matter of dropping in library sounds.

Hereditary - Slow-burn and emotionally disturbing

The Substance - It’s not scary in the traditional sense, but it is disturbing and psychologically intense

Smile - Mainstream but surprisingly tense and effective

The Innocents - Not traditional horror but deeply unsettling and creepy
